Holiday Decoration Idea: Tie-Dye Tree Skirt Tassels
Published Date: November 13, 2024 We think one of the most enjoyable parts of decorating for Christmas is all of the options! From traditional to glam to natural to kitschy, the possibilities are seriously endless. We love this holiday decoration idea from Mikyla Creates – a tie-dye tasseled tree skirt – because of course we love anything tie dye, any time of year! Check out this easy tutorial for how to make your own tie-dye tasseled Christmas tree skirt and get inspired to add some extra color to your holiday décor this year! Supplies needed Tulip One-Step Tie Dye – desired kit or colors - White or cream-colored tree skirt - Cotton yarn in the same color as tree skirt - Spatula to help make your tassels - Scissors - Spray bottle - Disposable plastic surface cover - Paper towels - Embroidery needle/thread Instructions Tassel supplies For this holiday decoration idea, you only need a few supplies for such a fun, colorful result! First, you’ll start by making your tassels. (They’re super easy to DIY!) Wrap yarn around spatula Use an item like a spatula (or even a piece of cardboard) to wrap your yarn around. You’ll want an item that’s about the same width as the length you’d like your tassels to be. Wrap the yarn around your item as many times as you’d like for the thickness of your tassels. Mikyla wrapped hers around a spatula 50 times. Cut yarn off spatula Cut the looped yarn off of the spatula, cutting only on one end (not both). Create hanger strand for tassels Cut a strand of yarn the length that you want your tassel hanger to be. Lay your cut group of strands vertically on your work surface, then place the extra strand you just cut for the hanger across the group of yarn, laying it horizontally and at the halfway point. Fold the group of yarn strands in half over the top of the single hanger strand. Tie string around top to create tassel Cut another strand of yarn and tie it around your group of strands just below the top to form your tassel. Repeat this process to create as many tassels as you’ll need to fit around your tree skirt. Cut bottom of tassel for an even edge Trim the bottom of the tassel so you have a clean, even edge. Cover work surface and mix dyes Now it’s time to get your tassels ready for tie dye! Cover your work surface with a plastic table cover and mix your dyes according to instructions. Mist tassels with water Add some water to a spray bottle and mist the tassels to dampen them. Squeeze dyes onto tassels Squeeze dyes onto the bottom halves of the tassels so they look dip dyed. You can do all one color or as many as you like! Once you’ve dyed your tassels, you can use paper towels to help dab away some of the moisture, then let them dry completely so the dye can set. Sew and tie tassels to tree skirt You’re almost finished with this fun holiday decoration idea! Once your tassels are completely dry, spread them evenly around the tree skirt to get an idea for placement. Thread the hanger strand of the tassel through an embroidery needle, then simply make one loop through the edge of the tree skirt and tie a knot to secure the tassel in place. Repeat with all tassels to attach to the skirt. Tie-Dye Tasseled Tree Skirt Place your tree skirt around your tree and enjoy your colorful tie-dye creation! It’s one fun way to make your Christmas extra merry & bright this year. What holiday decoration ideas are you making this year with Tulip Color Products? Make Your Own Tie-Dye Family Stockings
Published Date: November 12, 2024 Want Santa to fill your family stockings with lots of good stuff this year? Up your chances with custom tie-dye stockings that’ll catch his eye once he comes down the chimney! Mikyla Creates will show you how to use Tulip Fabric Dyes to make ombre-dyed family stockings with pretty pompoms to go with them. Get inspired to get colorfully creative with your holiday décor this year! Supplies needed - Tulip Fabric Dyes (Hot Water Dyes) – Bright Pink, Gray, Sunshine – or desired colors - White cotton chunky knit stockings - Yarn in desired colors for pompoms - Pompom makers in various sizes - Large bowl for mixing dye - Salt/measuring spoons - Mixing spoon - Scissors - Disposable plastic table cover Instructions Make sure stockings are 100% cotton For best results when dyeing your family stockings, make sure the stockings are made from 100% cotton or another natural-fiber fabric. Mix Fabric Dyes according to instructions Cover your work surface with a protective plastic table cover, then mix your Fabric Dyes (hot water dyes) in a large bowl according to the package instructions. Create custom colors by mixing and testing dyes Mikyla created her own custom peach-pink color by mixing and testing Bright Pink, Gray and Sunshine dyes. To do this, mix in a little bit of each dye powder at a time and test with a paper towel until you get the shade you want. You can also try mixing other colors, or using the shade that comes in your dye packet. Get creative with your family stockings and have fun! Dye the stockings To dye your family stockings, first dampen each stocking and wring out the excess water. You can either dip the stockings directly into the bowl of dye and let them soak in the dye for a bit, or you can spoon the dyes onto the stockings if you want more control over the dye placement. The damper the stocking, the more the dye will permeate and travel through the fabric fibers. For an ombre effect when spooning the dye, add more dye on the bottoms of the stockings and less as you work your way towards the tops. Pompom making supplies Cover the stockings with plastic to keep damp while the dye sets, then follow instructions for laundering and drying. While the dye is processing, you can make colorful pompoms to go with your family stockings! Mikyla used pompom makers of various sizes for hers. Wrap yarn around each side of pompom maker To make the pompoms, wrap yarn around each side of the pompom maker, as many times as you’d like. The more times you wrap the yarn, the fluffier the pompom will be! Cut yarn around perimeter Once each side is full, snap the pompom maker closed and cut the yarn around the perimeter of the device, making sure to cut all strands. Tie a string around pompom Tie a long string around the perimeter of the pompom maker, then remove the device and tighten the string as much as you can, then knot it to hold in place. Leave the long strands of string so you can use them to tie the pompoms to the stocking. Trim pompoms to even out Trim around the pompom to make sure the strings are even on all sides (leaving your long hanger strands). Continue this process to make pompoms of different colors and sizes for all of your family stockings. Attach pompoms to stockings Attach the pompoms to the stockings in clusters and trim excess string. Tie-Dye Family Stockings Once the pompoms are attached, it’s time to hang your tie-dye family stockings. Santa won’t be able to resist stuffing these stockings with lots of goodies! Colorful Christmas Fabric Gift Wrap & Matching Ornaments
Published Date: November 10, 2024 Looking to try something different this holiday season? Up your gift-wrapping game with Tulip! This furoshiki-inspired gift wrap uses fabric that’s been dyed with Tulip One-Step Tie Dye for a totally unique take on Christmas. And bonus: the leftover dye is perfect for making matching ornaments. In this tutorial, we will be using the spiral tie-dye technique with pretty pink shades, but feel free to use your favorite colors and techniques for a more personalized approach. Christmas is about to get even more colorful! Supplies needed Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit in your favorite colors (This project features dye in Wine, Fuchsia, and Orange) Protective Gloves Rubber Bands White cotton fabric, cut large enough to wrap your present Wooden spoon Paper Christmas ornaments Instructions Prepare the dye solution. Before you get started on this project, wash the fabric without fabric softeners. Mix the Wine-colored dye solution in by adding water to the dye bottle up to the fill line. Replace the cap and shake for 1 minute or until the dye is completely dissolved. Pour the Fuchsia-colored dye powder and water into a bowl and stir with a wooden spoon. Dye entire fabric in a large bowl, wringing out the excess dye. Place the fabric into the bowl containing Fuchsia dye. Ensure that the fabric is entirely saturated with dye by moving it around with the spoon. Carefully wring out excess dye and transfer the fabric onto a protected work surface. Twist fabric into a spiral and secure with rubber bands. Pinch the fabric at its center and twist into a swirl. Keep twisting the fabric tightly until the entire piece is formed into a spiral shape. Secure with rubber bands. Apply darker dye onto both sides of the spiral, then wrap in plastic to set. Apply Wine-colored dye onto the spiral, then flip it over and apply dye to the back. Place your project into a plastic bag and let set for 6-8 hours. Once your dye has fully processed, remove the rubber bands and check out your spiral tie dye! Rinse, wash and dry according to the instruction guide. Place your present in the center of the fabric at a 45-degree angle Once you’re done tie dyeing, it’s time to get wrapping! To get started, lay the fabric flat and place your present in the center of the fabric at a 45-degree angle. Fold one corner of the wrap across the gift, then the other. Fold one corner of the wrap across the gift, then the other, tucking the excess underneath if necessary. Pull the other two corners together and tie into a double knot. Pull the remaining two corners of the wrap together and tie into a double knot and add a gift tag for an extra-personalized touch. Your furokishi-inspired wrap is now complete! This reusable fabric gift wrap is a great eco-friendly alternative to paper gift wrap. Try using a variety of techniques and dyes for a colorful Christmas! Dip paper ornaments into dye and allow to dry completely. Don’t ditch that extra dye—use it for custom dip-dyed ornaments! Transfer the remaining dye into small bowls, then dip paper ornaments into the dye. Allow them to dry completely on a wire or plastic rack so that excess dye doesn’t pool. That’s it! Your matching ornaments are now ready for the tree. What other tie-dye techniques will you try for the holiday season? Show us your colorful crafts on social @TulipColorCrafts!
