Tie Dye

18 questions
Yes! A fun tie-dye technique that can expand your creative process is to create new colors by mixing dyes. Either pour the powdered dyes together into one bottle and then add water, or add water to your dyes and then mix the liquid dyes. Always shake well to ensure they are well blended. If youÂ’re hesitant about mixing your own colors, try out our Tulip Color Mixing Kit . This kit provides dye recipes to help you create up to 50 unique dye colors for your own one-of-a-kind projects.
Yes! As part of your tie-dye instructions, it is always recommended to prewash your fabric before dyeing it so you get the best dye absorption. Washing removes the sizing that was added at the factory and will resist the dye.
Polyester is a difficult fabric to dye, especially if it is 100% polyester. This is because polyester is a synthetic fabric made from petroleum, making it resistant to absorbing dye. For the sharpest and brightest tie-dye patterns, use natural fibers like cotton and rayon because they absorb dye much better.
The best way to tie dye for beginners is to buy a kit! The Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kits come with everything you need to be successful. The kits include applicator bottles with the powdered dye so all you have to do is add water! The kits also include disposable protective gloves, rubber bands and easy-to-follow tie-dye instructions for beginners. ItÂ’s also important to remember that there is no wrong way to tie dye. Every outcome is unique and thatÂ’s what makes tie dyeing so fun!
The best tie dye kits for color vibrancy include soda ash that allows you to presoak your fabrics, making them more receptive to the dye. The fastest method for great color vibrancy and without the wait time of the presoak is to use kits with powder dye and dye fixative already mixed in the bottles. These kits allow you to go straight to applying the dye. Tulip Artisan Tie Dye kits provide you with the more traditional approach where you will need to presoak. Tulip One-Step-Tie-Dye Kits already include dye fixative in the formula. In addition to being extremely easy to work with, these kits produce super vibrant colors with long-lasting results, especially when using natural fibers like 100% cotton, rayon, and silk. These offer everything you need for your tie-dye success!

The best way to wash tie dye for the first time is, after rinsing thoroughly, place your dyed item in the washer all by itself. Add a small amount of laundry soap and set to the cold-water setting. Wash and dry your newly dyed item separately for the first few washes.
Follow these simple steps on how to wash tie dye projects for the first time: Step 1: Rinse thoroughly. Step 2: Place your dyed item in the washer all by itself. Add a small amount of laundry soap and set to the cold-water setting. Step 3: Air dry. Step 4: Wash and dry your newly dyed item separately for the first few washes.
Yes! A crucial step in your tie-dye instructions is to cover dyed fabric with plastic wrap or put it in a sealed plastic bag to keep damp while the dye sets. If it begins to dry, it could affect the colors and cause some staining issues.
Generally, we say that each 4 fl. oz. bottle of tie dye can create up to 3 medium-sized adult T-shirts. This depends on the overall color coverage, as well as fabricÂ’s saturation. We have noticed that beginner tie dyers and children tend to use more dye than what is needed, so we recommend you allocate one 4 fl. oz. bottle of dye per person when hosting events or parties.
The answer to your question is yes. However, all Tulip tie-dye products come with the necessary dyes, applicator bottles, gloves, and instructions to ensure a successful experience. Other dye products may require heat or hot water to set correctly, and they do not come with applicator bottles that make it possible to achieve many of today's more popular looks.
In order to achieve the best dye saturation, your tie-dye instructions say to cover and let set 6-8 hours or longer for more intense colors. But if you are not wanting to wait that long to see your finished results, donÂ’t fret! There is an alternative method called Two-Minute Tie Dye. This innovative process lets you use your kitchen microwave to speed up the dye setting process to a mere two minutes. The patent-pending containers and bags protect your damp project while also setting the dye into the fabric in the microwave. Check out these specialty Tulip Two-Minute Tie-Dye Kits for this fun alternative!
Prep your fabric by prewashing it. Secure with rubber bands based on technique chosen. Add dye color on each side. Let your project set 6-8 hours or overnight. Remove rubber bands to reveal design. Rinse, wash, dry and wear.

It is best to rinse and wash tie dye in cold water to prevent fading. Continue washing your tie dye in cold water for the first few washes.
Most Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit bottles have a printed fill line close to the neck of the bottle. A few bottles do not. In that case, fill with water up to right below the neck of the bottle. This will allow you enough room to shake and dissolve the powdered dye into the water.
There are many tie-dye techniques, and some are more complex than others. For beginners, these are the most popular tie-dye techniques: • Spiral • Bullseye • Crumple (The crumple is simple enough for kids to do) Each of our Tulip Tie Dye kits has an instruction sheet with an eclectic group of tie dye patterns from which to choose. Each design has easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions. For more step-by-step techniques, video tutorials and detailed instructions, visit our tie-dye techniques page.
One of the key tie-dye instructions is to not add water to your dye until you are prepared to apply it. It is best to apply dye within 24 hours after mixing. Dye left unapplied after 24 hours will begin to lose concentration and will result in noticeably weaker color intensity.

Fabric Paint

Soft paint is a unique product specifically designed to be used on light-colored and dark fabrics. Soft paint remains lightweight and flexible, making it comfortable to wear yet strong enough to make it through countless washings without fading or cracking. Soft paint is excellent for stamping, stenciling, and brushing onto most fabric types.
Fabric is a more porous substrate than many other materials therefore it may take more paint to cover the same area.
Our Tulip fabric paints are water-based, non-toxic, and permanent on fabrics. Using a fabric paint is essential because it will not crack, become "crunchy," or peel off like your average acrylic paint. Tulip has two unique lines of paint. Brush on fabric, which is lightweight and great for light-colored materials. The other is Soft paint, a thicker paint that provides superior coverage on light and dark substrates.
Place the stencil into position and secure it using painter's tape or a repositionable adhesive spray. Place a piece of cardboard inside your shirt to prevent paint from soaking to the backside. Apply Tulip Brush on or Soft paint using a sponge in a dabbing motion. Avoid dragging your sponge or brush to prevent paint from getting underneath your stencil openings. Remove the stencil and let dry completely before washing or wearing.
If the paint is still wet, wash it off with soap and water. It the paint has dried, simply remove it by peeling it away. All Duncan fabric paint products are non-toxic; conform to ASTM standards and are California Proposition 65-compliant.
Take a freezer paper and trace or draw your design or wording onto the paper side. Cut your design out with scissors or an Exacto knife. Iron the freezer paper onto your fabric with the waxy side down. Apply paint, remove stencil, and let dry.
Pre-wash all fabrics using no liquid softener or dryer sheets. Let dry and press out any wrinkles.
A shirt board is a coated piece of cardboard. It usually is in the shape of a shirt and is intended to slip between the front and back of the shirt to prevent paint from seeping through the fabric.
We recommend washing your fabric to remove sizing. Sometimes the sizing will prevent the fabric paint from adhering properly and can cause the paint to peel off. We recommend washing your fabric to remove sizing. Sometimes the sizing will prevent the fabric paint from adhering properly and can cause the paint to peel off.
Let the paint dry for 72 hours before washing. Turn fabric inside out; machine wash on a gentle cycle with warm water and mild laundry detergent. Using fabric softener will keep designs flexible and prevent cracking. Remember to line dry. To press your hand-painted shirt, iron only from the inside or back side of the shirt. Never touch paint directly with iron.
Choose your brushes by the effect you want to achieve. Flat shaders feature a chiseled edge that makes it ideal for creating a clean edge. Flat shaders are also ideal for creating "S", command leaf strokes and for filling in large areas. The liner brush is long or short tapered and is ideal for creating long, flowing lines such as stems, tendrils and scrolls. The scrubber generally features round, tapered bristles ideal for stippling, as well as adding and blending color on fabric.
Fabric paint bottles should be stored in a cool, dark place that does not exceed 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Storing dimensional paint upside-down helps minimize air bubbles.
We recommend waiting 72 hours before washing the fabric.
Fabric painting is a popular craft activity. Brushes provide exceptional versatility, whether using stencils, masking tape, or creating freehand. The first step is to pour out puddles of paint colors onto a paint palette. Dip your brush into the paint. Remove excess paint before applying it to your substrate to avoid drips. It is always easier to add more paint or apply multiple coats than it is to remove paint from your fabrics. For better coverage, let the paint dry between each coat.
Machine washable fabrics like 100% cotton, 50/50 cotton/polyester blends, canvas, denim, sweatshirt fleece (including acrylic), and t-shirt knits are ideal for painting with Tulip Fabric Paints.
If the paint is still wet, you may be able to wash it off with soap and water. Please note that once the paint dries, it is permanent and may not be able to be removed from your fabrics.
If the paint is still wet, you can remove some of the paint with soap and water before it dries. Otherwise, the easiest way to correct a mistake is to try to hide it by incorporating it into the design.
Painting patterns are available in books, magazines, on websites, and at your local library. Please note the restrictions on use of those patterns that are copyrighted.
Glow-in-the-dark fabric paint is a luminous paint that glows when exposed to UV lighting. The glow effect will last up to 10 minutes after every charge. Glow-in-the-dark fabric paint is a luminous paint that glows when exposed to UV lighting. The glow effect will last up to 10 minutes after every charge.
We recommend placing a T-shirt form or piece of cardboard between the layers of fabric to prevent paint from seeping through. The cardboard insert will also serve as a firm workspace from which to create.
Fabric paint can last a few years if stored properly.

Fabric Markers

23 questions
Tulip Fabric Markers maintain their bright and vibrant appearance on fabrics, regardless of how often you wash your creations. Before starting your project, we recommend testing your marker on a piece of paper or fabric swatch to familiarize yourself with the product.
Heat set means to apply heat to the fabric with an iron to your fabric markers color.
Most fabric markers work best on cotton and canvas, as these fabrics absorb ink the best. Other fabrics are okay to use, but it is always recommended to first test marker on an inconspicuous area to achieve your best results.
Tulip Fabric Markers are permanent on fabric and work best on light colored fabrics. Tulip Fabric Paint Markers use a thicker, paint ink formula that works on dark and light-colored fabrics. These markers need to be shaken and pressed down on a flat surface before use in order to for the ink to saturate the nib.
If decorating on a substrate that will be washed and worn, we recommend you prewash your fabric to remove the sizing. Prewashing will prevent any shrinking after you complete your design, and it allows the ink to absorb into the fibers better.
Tulip Fabric Markers can be used on various craft surfaces, such as white or light-colored fabrics, canvas, and paper. For more crafting fun, try Tulip Fabric Paint Markers on surfaces such as darker fabrics, denim, wood, rocks, and more!
Yes, Tulip fabric marker inks are nontoxic and safe to use for all ages.
To remove opaque marker inks, which are used in our Fabric Paint Markers, apply hydrogen peroxide or your preferred stain remover to the area while the ink is still wet . After the ink has dried, the color will be permanent on the fabric. Rub the hydrogen peroxide into the fabric to loosen the pigment and pat dry. Repeat as needed to remove the ink and wash fabric. This will remove most of the color from the fabric.
Store your fabric markers horizontally, with the cap firmly secured, to ensure color consistency on your next project.
To avoid having the ink bleed out when coloring, be careful not to stop or pause with the tip of the fabric marker resting on the fabric as the color will bleed out into it. If you find yourself hesitating, lift the marker off the fabric while you think about what you're doing. The grain of your fabric also has an impact on how well a fabric marker works. A coarse grain or rough texture to a fabric means there are possible “bumps” the pen has to go over. A fine grain or smooth fabric is easier to work on. If in doubt, test the marker on a scrap bit of fabric or in an inconspicuous area. To prevent ink from bleeding through the layers of the fabric, insert a shirt board or piece of cardboard between the layers of fabric to prevent the color to seep through fabric to the second layer of fabric as well as provide a stable decorating surface.
A fabric marker is a marker with specially formulated ink to permanently adhere to fabric. They also have specially designed tips to glide over fabric without skipping or bleeding unlike a marker designed for paper and other surfaces.
To activate the Opaque Marker (or Fabric Paint Marker), just shake the marker with cap on, remove cap and press down on the bullet tip to get the paint flowing. If tip of opaque marker becomes dry, dip in water to reactivate.
Machine wash clothes decorated with fabric markers on gentle cycle after 24 hours. Tumble dry low.
Tulip Fabric Markers work best on light colored fabrics. For projects on darker colored fabrics, use Tulip Fabric Paint Markers.
Personalizing tees with fabric markers is super fun, easy, and mess-free! Tulip has a wide variety of options to consider. Fabric Paint Markers, Fine Writers, and Graffiti pens offer the best control for writing and outlining. Our Brush Tip markers are better for color blending, filling in stencils, and broader coverage. Helpful hints for your next t-shirt project: Insert a T-shirt form or piece of cardboard into your tee shirt and secure it to prevent your shirt from pulling or bunching. Test your marker on a piece of paper or fabric swatch before starting your project to familiarize yourself with the marker tip.
Opaque markers, also called fabric paint markers, contain a specialized acrylic paint formula that is permanent on fabrics and won't fade even after repeated washings. Opaque means our markers produce bright, visible colors on light and dark fabrics.
Customizing and decorating shoes is popular with crafters of all ages! When decorating canvas shoes with fabric markers, you will want to use a pen with a firm tip to ensure complete control and a softer brush tip for broader application and color blending. Tulip has a wide variety of options to consider. Fabric Paint Markers, Fine Writers, and Graffiti pens offer the best control. Our Brush Tip markers are better for color blending and broader coverage.
For best results, it is recommended to let your fabric markers design dry flat for 24 hours.
If tip of marker becomes dry, dip the tip in water to reactivate. You can also try storing the marker horizontally for 24 hours to reactivate.
Fabric markers contain permanent color that is designed to not wash out of clothing or fade over time. To remove fabric marker, apply hydrogen peroxide or your preferred stain remover to the area while the ink is still wet . After the ink has dried, the color will be permanent on the fabric. Rub the hydrogen peroxide into the fabric to loosen the pigment and pat dry. Repeat as needed to remove the ink and wash fabric. This will remove most of the color from the fabric.

Fabric Dye

32 questions
Yes, neckties with natural fibers like silk or cotton can be dyed. Synthetic fibers like 100% polyester cannot.
Be sure to use the hottest water possible for your fabric so all the dye powder will dissolve.
Velvet can be dyed with Tulip Dye Pods, Permanent (hot water) Dyes, and Tulip One-Step dyes. Velvet is typically made of natural fibers such as cotton, silk, or rayon, making it an excellent substrate for dyeing. We do not recommend our products for dyeing synthetic fabrics other than nylon.
Leather garments and boots should not be dyed using washing machine or immersion (dyebath) methods. High heat temperatures and the agitation from a washing machine can damage leather beyond repair. Fabric dyes permeate fabric fibers, making color more permanent. The bond will not be as permanent because leather is not a fabric material. Using fabric dyes on leather may increase the risk of color transfer when worn. Some types of leather may have oils, wax, or other sealants, making it difficult to dye. Smaller leather accents can be stained using our Tulip One-Step Tie Dyes. Tulip One-Step dye colors may be less vibrant on leather than on fabric. For best results, use untreated leather for craft dyeing purposes. Dyes will not work on faux leather (pleather) or vinyl.
We recommend using our dye products on fabrics that are 100% natural, such as cotton, rayon, and silk. Our dyes absorb into natural fibers, which is why they hold their color so well, washing after washing. Manufactured synthetic materials such as polyester, acrylic, nylon, etc., absorb these dyes poorly or sometimes not at all. If you want to experiment, try on a similar fabric swatch first.
Yes. Denim jeans are compatible with Tulip Dye Pods, Tulip Permanent (hot water) Dyes, and Tulip One-Step Dyes. The higher the cotton content, the stronger the color will be. Jeans that blend cotton and synthetic (polyester or Spandex) fabrics will produce lighter shades of color.
Yes, but remember that natural fiber yarns — such as cotton, wool, silk, and alpaca — take on dye much better than synthetics (acrylic).
Remove the fabric, add detergent, and run an empty cycle to remove any remaining dye traces.
Yes, you can. Mix the color bath in a bowl and submerge the feathers. Leave them until they reach the desired shade, then remove from the bath, rinse, and let dry.
Tulip One-Step and Permanent Fabric (hot water) Dyes will stain natural eggshells. Please note that you should not consume eggs dyed with our products because our dyes are not food-grade. Tulip dyes can be used on natural wooden eggs but won't dye plastic.
You'll need your fabric completely wet before starting so the dye permeates the fabric. Add salt as indicated, and remember, the hotter the water, the better the results. If using the stovetop method, fully dissolve the dye to ensure maximum coverage and color vibrancy.
Fabric Dye Pods and Permanent Fabric Dyes encourage the use of salt to improve color vibrancy. See instructions for exact measurements. Salt is essential as it helps make the fibers of your fabric more receptive to the dyes, improving color intensity and consistency.
The easiest way to dye in a washing machine is to use Tulip Dye Pods in a High Efficiency (HE) washing machine. Dye pods are simply placed into the machine with your fabric and some salt. Keep in mind dye works best on 100% cotton, linen, ramie and rayon. Run a cycle with hot water, remove dye pod and run a second cycle with fabric to remove excess dye. Run an empty cycle to clean machine and youÂ’re done! Delicate or knit garments may be better suited for hand dyeing techniques. Use the garment special care instructions as an indication if machine dyeing is ideal for your knit item. Proceed with caution, and for best dyeing results never overload the machine. Rubber or plastic parts may become tinted after dyeing, this will not affect your laundry but may be permanent. What Can Be Dyed in the Washing Machine Smaller load: underwear, scarves, shrugs & wraps, socks & tights, short or long sleeve T-shirts, button-down shirts & light vests, pillow slips, table runners Medium load: sweats & denim, skirts, dresses & pants, tablecloths, heavier denim jackets, sweaters, hand towel sets, non-rubber backed mats, smaller sheet sets, heavy robes Largest load: large slipcovers, larger sheet sets, duvet covers, bedspreads. Large/bulky material: is not ideal for front load washing machines. Bulky/long fabric: may need to be manually redistributed mid-cycle in top-loader machines.
Yes, silk is a natural fiber fabric that absorbs dye well.
Lace featuring natural fibers such as cotton, silk, or rayon are compatible with Tulip fabric dyes.
Some nylons will take on dye and others will not. It is always best to test first on scrap fabric to ensure you get the results you seek. Dyes work best on 100% natural fibers. Other materials wonÂ’t accept the dye or will dye to a lighter shade. Follow the product instructions for best results.
You can dye upholstered furniture if you remove the upholstery fabric from the furniture. Keep in mind dye works best on 100% cotton, linen, ramie and rayon. Note that the fabrics must be set in the dye bath and rinsed and washed after the required set time. Failure to wash the upholstery increases the chance that the dye will rub off on clothing or other fabrics at a later time.
Bleach is the best dye remover. Soak the shirt in bleach/water mixture until you achieve your desired look. Results may vary, and it is not likely to bleach entirely white.
Polyester is a tricky fabric to dye, especially if it is 100% polyester. Polyester is a synthetic fabric made from petroleum, making it resistant to dye absorption. We recommend natural fibers like 100% cotton and rayon for the sharpest and brightest results.
Suppose you want to dye the fabric a darker color. In that case, we recommend using a dye color within the same color family as the existing color on the fabric (i.e., from Light Pink to Fuchsia). Any color outside of the color family may cause a messy result. Remember, color mixing rules will apply.
If the dye has already dried, it will be tough to remove. On a wet dye stain, try soaking with rubbing alcohol. Dab the stain with a paper towel to remove color, reapply rubbing alcohol, and dab some more. If alcohol does not work, add a bit of liquid laundry detergent to the stain. Scrub with an old toothbrush, then rinse in warm water to remove detergent and alcohol. If working on white fabric, bleach may work to remove small spots or stains. If the stain persists, consider redyeing the garment with a darker color rather than discarding the garment.
Burlap is compatible with fabric dyes. Using a lighter burlap material will produce a more desired color. When cutting the burlap to a specific size, leaving a few extra inches on all sides is essential. This prevents fraying that may occur during the dyeing process from impacting your final project. Follow the standard dyeing instructions, rinse the burlap thoroughly, and hang it to dry.
Suppose you want to tie dye the fabric a darker color. In that case, we recommend using a dye color within the same color family as the existing color on the fabric (i.e., from Light Pink to Fuchsia). Any color outside of the color family may turn muddy or brown. Remember, color mixing rules will apply.
The dye will eventually wear off, but if you don't want to wait, try a heavy-duty soap like Lava Soap.
For Permanent Fabric (hot water) Dyes, one packet (50 grams) mixed with 1 gallon of hot water will dye the equivalent of one oversized adult T-shirt. For stronger color, use 1 1/2 to 2 packets of dye per gallon of water. Use less than one packet of dye per gallon of water for lighter colors. Tulip Fabric Dye Pods will dye up to four adult medium T-shirts or two medium jeans per cycle. Adding more fabric than recommended to your wash cycle will produce less vibrant color. Add a second dye pod to the wash for larger loads or more vibrant results. Please note that results may vary due to differences in washing machines (water holding capacity, heat settings, etc.).
Yes! Creating new colors by mixing dyes is a fun dye technique that can expand your creative process. We recommend adding water to your dye bath or bottle and mixing it into a third bottle or bowl. Activating the dye makes it easier to see your color creation. You can also try the Tulip Color Mixing Tie-Dye Kit , which includes the dye and guide for creating 50 unique formulas.
Like furniture, you can dye natural fabric rugs as long as you can rinse and wash the carpet after the required set time.
Polyester is a tricky fabric to dye, especially if it is 100% polyester. Polyester is a synthetic fabric made from petroleum, making it resistant to dye absorption. We recommend natural fibers like 100% cotton and rayon for the sharpest and brightest results.
Inhaling a little bit of tie-dye powder might turn the inside of your nose or tongue the color of the dye, and it may cause some irritation. Remove as much dye as possible with running water, and get medical attention if irritation persists. If swallowed, contact a poison control center or doctor immediately. Do not induce vomiting. If in the eyes, rinse with water for 15 minutes. If on the skin, rinse well with water.
Our dyes are brightest and last the longest on natural fabrics. However, we're all about creative experimentation and new dye application methods. Since our dyes are not food-grade, we don't recommend using our dyes on substrates that may come in contact with food.
Yes! Prewashing your fabrics removes sizing and improves dye absorption and color vibrancy.
A bucket, bin, or stainless-steel sink works best for our Permanent Fabric Dyes.

General Glue Knowledge

25 questions
Yes, you can add acrylic paint to your glue to change the color of it. The proportion of paint to glue depends on the color you want to achieve: for a darker color, use more paint, adding a small amount at a time until the desired color is reached. Deep reds are difficult to achieve because the whiteness of the glue creates a pastel shade. However, most glues can be turned quite dark with just a small amount of paint. The color will remain the same when the glue dries.
Storing projects made with glue depends on the project. Since most liquid glues dry without tackiness, they can be stored on top of or next to other items without issue. If you are unsure, you can store glued items in standard packing materials.
How long it takes for glue to dry depends on several factors, including the glue used, how much glue was used on your project, and the humidity level in your area. A general rule for white glue is to let the glue dry at least overnight for the bond to properly set. If there will be any weight bearing on the bond, we recommend allowing the glue to dry for at least 48 hours. When the glue is set up, it does not always mean it is completely dry, so the best practice is to wait for the recommended dry time. See labels for additional details.
Craft adhesives contain formulas for adhering to more general surfaces like kids' crafts (paper, felt, glitter, and lightweight materials), hobby projects (non-washable fabrics, wood, etc.), and basic household repairs.
Each glue is made from different raw materials, some toxic and some not. By law, all products containing toxic materials must have a caution message printed on all labels. To be sure if a glue is toxic, read the entire label and look for clearly marked warnings.
PVA Glue stands for polyvinyl acetate glue and refers to the type of resin used in the glue. PVA glue is commonly known as white glue or school glue and is water-based, odorless, nontoxic, and does not break down or yellow over time. PVA glue remains flexible when dry and does not affect the PH balance of papers, photos, and other items used.
If your glue freezes, allow it to thaw out, and it will work just fine. Aleene's glues are tested and pass several freeze/thaw tests to ensure a quality experience each time you use them.
The easiest way to get every drop of glue out of a glue bottle is to turn it upside down and stand it tip down in a cup or a jar. Allow the glue to flow to the tip. Keep the glue stored that way until all the glue is gone. You can also use a cotton swab, toothpick, or skewer to help get all the glue out of the bottle.
Drying time varies depending on the glue formulation, the temperature and humidity, and the amount of glue used. Generally, the thinner the application of glue and the warmer and dryer the climate, the faster the glue will dry. Heat is the most efficient method for getting glue to dry quickly. You can use a blow dryer, a heat lamp, a fan or other accelerator products to help speed up the glue drying process.
An embellishment glue is a fabric glue that is used to decorate garments and home decor items. Fabric glues are a great option for embellishing because of their flexible, permanent bond that keeps items in place. Typical embellishments include rhinestones, beads, pom poms, trims, sequins, glitter, appliques, etc.
The type of glue you'll need for each project depends on the surfaces you work with. Gluing on foam requires a more flexible bond; gluing non-porous surfaces like glass or hard plastic requires a more industrial glue formula. The best way to figure out which glue you need is to visit our product pages online or refer to the instructions on the glue label for recommended surfaces.
There are many reasons why glue might not work as it's supposed to: The surfaces you are trying to glue are dirty or greasy, thus preventing the glue from properly bonding to the surfaces. Make sure the items are clean from visible dirt and debris. PVA and solvent glues work by sinking into the surfaces of the articles being glued and forming a physical bond to lock the pieces together. You might be using the wrong glue for the surfaces you are gluing; check the glue label to see what surfaces it's formulated to adhere to. The glue might need to be applied differently. Make sure to read all instructions before using.
School glue is a nontoxic, kid-friendly adhesive that is safe for use in the classroom. School glue is often a white glue - also called a PVA Glue or polyvinyl acetate glue - and is nontoxic, odorless, and acid-free.
Glue residue happens. Whether using a Spray Adhesive or if you apply too much glue before pressing your substrates together. Here are a couple of quick ways to address this concern. If the glue is still wet, use a dry paper towel or Q-tip to remove most of the excess, then clean away with a damp, soapy cloth. If the glue has dried, you can try peeling or rubbing it away by carefully scraping it from the surface with a knife or razor blade or using a glue remover product like Goo Gone. All Tacky and water-based adhesives can be removed with an all-natural, biodegradable citrus-based cleaner. For solvent-based adhesives, we recommend trying acetone (found in nail polish remover), rubbing alcohol (85% or higher), or mineral spirits.
It depends on the items you are gluing together. Popular tools for hard surfaces like wood and plastic include masking tape, clamps and clothespins. For fabrics, use straight pins, clothespins or safety pins.
We recommend waiting 72 hours before washing the fabric with your new embellishments.
A glue is water soluble depending on the materials it is made out of. If the materials are water soluble, the bonds they form have limited resistance to moisture because they more easily absorb water. Many of Aleene's glues are water soluble; check the glue label for water resistance details.
Carefully apply appropriate glue to the lifted section of the transfer and press to surface with fingertips. This will bond it to the fabric.
Remove the tip from the bottle. Rinse or soak the tip in warm water. Poke a skewer/T-pin through the tip to clear away the dried glue. Note: if you poke a pin through the tip without removing it first, you'll push the clog down into the glue bottle, which can eventually return to the tip.
For paper craft techniques such as Collage, Decoupage or Paper Mache, we recommend using Aleene's Premium Decoupage Glue. It is also a popular glue for DIY greeting cards, gift wrap, scrapbooking, stamps & posters. The Aleene's Premium Decoupage Glue in Matte and Gloss finishes can be used with the following materials: paper, cardstock, cardboard, tissue paper, wood, terra cotta, canvas, glass, plaster, styrofoam, foam sheets, embellishments such as ribbons, glitter, iridescent mica powders, fabric. Instructions: Apply the Decoupage Glue onto the substrate surface with a paintbrush, sponge, or foam dauber. Then apply the glued items (tissue paper, embellishments, paper cutouts, etc.) onto the surface while the glue is still wet. Smooth out the glue items with your finger until all air voids are pushed out. At this stage, you may allow the Decoupage Glue to dry completely or apply another coat over the top as a sealer. All Aleene's adhesives are treated with a biocide to prevent bacteria growth. If you keep the glue bottle capped tightly, your glue should last a long time.
Apply a layer of glue to both substrates to be glued. Do not immediately press together; instead wait about 5 minutes for the glue to tack up so it's not as slippery. Press the items together. Secure with tape, clamps or clothespins until the glue dries completely.
We recommend using Aleene's DIY Craft Super Glue Gel to glue rubber to plastic. This industrial-strength, all-purpose glue works on a variety of heavy duty surfaces, such as rubber, plastic, glass, metal, fiberglass and more.
To repair a broken mirror, use a glue formulated for glass, such as Aleeness Glass & Bead Adhesive or Aleene's Mixed Media Adhesive. These industrial-strength adhesives have a thick gel formula designed to grab slick surfaces like glass and mirrors upon contact.
Glue doesn't always have to be applied directly from the bottle; depending on the project and surfaces, sometimes using other tools is better, depending on your goal. Generally, you'll want to use disposable tools that can be thrown away after use since glue can damage the tool or brush. We recommend the following tools for applying glue: sea sponges, cosmetic sponges, toothpicks, inexpensive bristle brushes/paintbrushes, foam brushes, cotton swabs.

Tacky Glue

5 questions
You can use any of the following Aleene's adhesives on poster boards: Aleene's Original Tacky Glue, School Tacky Glue, Turbo Tacky Glue, Quick Dry Tacky Glue, and Fast Grab Tacky Glue. All of these glues feature a thick, non-toxic formula that dries clear and won't yellow or wrinkle your poster board project.
Aleene's uses a specially formulated resin in the Original Tacky Glue formula, giving it a high initial "tack" (grabbing power) and bonding strength. Original Tacky Glue's thick formula helps it grab and hold items on contact. Other craft glues use more water and less adhesive solids, causing the glues to be less effective.
Yes. Aleene's has several clay recipes using Original Tacky Glue and everyday household items. Here is how to make clay with glue and bread: Remove the crust from a slice of bread (white bread is suggested for best results when coloring the clay). Tear the bread slice into small pieces and place in a disposable plastic bag, then add 1 tablespoon of Tacky Glue. Add a few drops of acrylic paint to color the clay if desired. Clay can also be painted after drying. Knead the bread and glue within the bag until thoroughly mixed and clay forms. Remove the clay from the bag and knead until fully formed. Note: if the mixture is too runny, add more bread pieces in small amounts. Use clay to make the desired item, then let dry overnight. Paint with acrylic paint if desired, let it dry, then seal it with your favorite Aleene's Acrylic Sealer.
Aleene's Tacky Glue is nontoxic and safe for classroom, home, or office use. Make sure to check the label of any glue before using, as all products containing toxic materials are required to print a caution message on all labels.
Aleene's Original Tacky Glue can create crackled effects on surfaces. Here is how to create a crack effect using glue: Paint the object with a base coat of acrylic paint. Let dry. Brush an abundant layer of Tacky Glue over the dried paint in the areas you want to crackle. Let the glue set until firm and tacky but not completely dry. While the layer of glue is still sticky, brush the same color of paint or a contrasting color over the glue, brushing only once instead of back and forth, as that could hinder the crackling process. As the paint and glue dry, they will naturally crackle. Let dry completely. Protect your project with your favorite Aleene's Acrylic Sealer.

Iron On Embellishments

6 questions
We recommend waiting 72 hours after applying the iron-on transfer before washing the fabric.
Preheat iron to a setting between 325 and 350 (wool and cotton). If fabric is wrinkled, iron fabric prior to applying the crystals. If using a steam iron, remove all water from iron. Do not use an ironing board; lay a towel over a hard surface to iron.
Always heat test in an inconspicuous area to avoid scorching. Position crystals glue side down on fabric. Cover with a thin cloth. Press iron on crystals and hold for 15-20 seconds; do not move iron from side to side. Let fabric cool completely before moving.
Use our washable glue to hold in place. Use a toothpick to add a small dot of glue where needed and press stone into place. Let dry.
Preheat iron to a setting between 325 and 350 (wool and cotton). If using a steam iron, remove all water from the iron, as moisture will ruin the transfer. If necessary, iron fabric prior to applying the transfer to remove any wrinkles.
To apply iron-on transfer, place fabric on a hard surface such as a table or counter covered with a smooth, thin towel. Position transfer on fabric, transfer side down. Iron on transfer with a firm, even, circular motion for one minute. Let paper cool completely, about 2 minutes. Starting at one corner, slowly peel backing paper away from fabric, making sure design has completely transferred. Continue to gently peel backing paper away from fabric in a smooth, continuous motion. If design does not adhere to fabric, carefully replace backing paper and repeat steps.

Heavy Duty & DIY Glues

5 questions
Gluing plastic to plastic usually requires an industrial-strength bond, depending on the type of plastic. Aleene's The Ultimate Multi-Surface Adhesive has an industrial-strength formula that works great for gluing plastic to plastic. For smaller, more delicate plastics like rhinestones, try using a non-solvent based glue that won't damage the rhinestone, like Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue.
It depends on the surfaces you are gluing. Check glue labels to verify what surfaces they are formulated to work best on (ex. wood, plastic, glass, porcelain). In general, you want a glue that is formulated to dry permanently with a strong hold. For outdoor items, we recommend adhesives that are weather proof and UV proof.
No. Aleene's glues are formulated to dry clear and will not turn yellow over time. If using Aleene's adhesives for outdoor projects, please check the label for statements regarding UV resistance. We have specialized formulas, like The Ultimate Multi-Surface Adhesive, that won't turn yellow or become brittle under the sun.
Glues that are solvent-based (as opposed to water-based) will be your best bet. Industrial strength or Silicone glues formulated to be weatherproof are good options. Aleene's DIY Craft Super Glue is an ultra-strong, water- and UV-resistant adhesive, making it an excellent choice. Aleene's Ultimate Adhesive or Super Fabric are also excellent waterproof options.
Aleene's makes several adhesives that are great for gluing plastic to wood. Aleene's DIY Craft Super Glue Gel is an industrial-strength glue that bonds in seconds and can be used on a variety of heavy duty surfaces, including plastic and wood. The best glue for applying rhinestones to a variety of surfaces is Rhinestone Adhesive. It is formulated to dry clear, flexible, and permanent, and won't damage or tarnish embellishments. Water-based fabric glues will also adhere strongly without any damaging effects to rhinestones. The other recommended rhinestone glues are Jewel-It, OK to Wash-It, and Permanent Fabric Glue.

Fabric Glue

28 questions
All our permanent fabric glues , including Leather & Suede Glue, are water-resistant. They are not considered waterproof. Our temporary fabric glues , such as No-Sew and Temporary Fabric Glue Sticks, are designed to be washed out and therefore are not water-resistant. These adhesives are ideal for temporary fixes or for use with sewing machines.
Turn fabric inside out. Machine wash according to fabric instructions. Do not use harsh detergents or bleach. Remove promptly and line dry. To iron, turn garment inside out, being careful not to touch design with iron. Do not dry clean.
Aleene's Insta-Fuse Fabric Fusion is the only product in the line that is dry cleanable. Chemicals used in most dry cleaning processes will weaken or dissolve most other glues and weaken the bond.
Pre-wash all fabrics using no liquid softener or dryer sheets. Let dry and press out any wrinkles.
We recommend washing your fabric to remove sizing. Sometimes the sizing will prevent the crystals from adhering properly and can cause the crystals to peel off.
Yes. The fabric glues are a good alternative to sewing but the crafter is advised to test first to make sure the "hand"and amount of soak-through is acceptable. Our fabric glues remain permanent through repeated washings and won't yellow or lose adhesion over time.
Yes, glitter can be adhered to fabric with fabric glue . To add glitter to fabric with fabric glue , squeeze the glue directly from the bottle or use a paint brush to apply designs onto fabric with or without a stencil. While the glue is still wet, sprinkle on a generous amount of glitter and wait for the glue to dry. After the glue is dry, shake off all excess glitter. Glitters generally have good adhesion and longevity on fabric with all Aleene's fabric glues .
The water-based fabric glues may darken certain lightweight and delicate fabrics, such as polyester satin ribbon. The solvent-based fabric glues may cause some color-bleeding of some dyed items. It is recommended to test fabric glues in an inconspicuous location before applying to your project.
Tulip iron-on transfers can be ironed on to most machine-washable fabrics, including cotton, poly/cotton blends, canvas, denim and all colors of fabric.
Temporary glue can be used as a resistor on fabric. Note: Permanent fabric glue will dry permanently on the fabric and should not be used. Here is how to use glue as a resist: Apply the glue to the fabric in the design of your choice. Allow the glue to dry completely on the fabric, becoming rigid and clear. Paint or dye the fabric in the colors of your choice. Allow the fabric to dry completely after applying the dye/paint. Soak the fabric in warm water for 20 to 30 minutes to soften the glue. Wash the fabric by hand or machine in warm, soapy water to remove the remaining glue. Tip: Aleene's Clear Gel Tacky Glue makes a great resist on fabric.
Currently, most fabric glues contain synthetic ingredients, and truly eco-friendly options are limited. However, there are some alternatives, like water-based fabric glues , that limit the use of petroleum-based solvents that make them more sustainable options. If this is important to you, consider Fabric Fusion, OK to Wash-It, Permanent Fabric Glue, etc.
Tulip Iron-on Crystals can be ironed on to most machine-washable fabrics, including cotton, poly/cotton blends, canvas and denim. Use fabrics that can hold up to high heat.

Soaking in acetone can remove some dried fabric glues but may not remove all the adhesive.
The water-based fabric glues , such as Fabric Fusion, OK to Wash-It, Permanent Fabric Glue, etc., will wash out easily with a water rinse or one wash cycle if the glue is still wet. The solvent-based fabric glues , such as Super Fabric Adhesive and Quick Dry Fabric Fusion, are more difficult to wash out and will require using a solvent such as acetone to remove the wet glue. Always test before use. The heat-activated Insta-Fuse Fabric Fusion can be washed off very easily with water before heat set.
The dry time for fabric glue depends on the application thickness. Waiting a minimum of 72 hours for all the fabric glues is recommended before laundering. Most of the water-based fabric glues , such as Fabric Fusion, OK to Wash-It, and Permanent Fabric Glue, will dry within an hour for thin applications. Thicker applications of the water-based fabric glues will require up to 24 hours to dry. The solvent-based fabric glues will dry quicker. Super Fabric Adhesive dries within 30-40 minutes and Quick Dry Fabric Fusion will dry within 3 minutes. For instant hold with no dry time, use the heat-activated Insta-Fuse Fabric Fusion.
Yes. The fabric glues such as OK to Wash-It, Permanent Fabric Glue, and Fabric Fusion work very well as craft glues , and have a non-acidic pH which is a good feature for paper crafts. The fabric glues also dry more flexible than the usual craft glues such as Tacky Glue and Clear Gel Tacky.
The best rhinestone glue for fabrics is Rhinestone Adhesive. It is formulated to dry clear, flexible, and permanent, and won't damage or tarnish embellishments. Liquid Fusion Performance adhesive is another great option, providing the strongest rhinestone to fabric bond strength of the glues.
Yes. Waiting a minimum of 72 hours for all the fabric glues is recommended before laundering. Fabric glues with temporary hold, like No-Sew, are not machine washable. You can also refer to the back of the packaging for dry times and laundering instructions.
Because vinyl is a heavier material, we recommend using an industrial-strength glue formulated for fabric, such as Aleene's Super Fabric Adhesive. You can also use Aleene's The Ultimate Multi-Surface Adhesive, which is formulated to work on a variety of heavy materials, including fabric.
The water-based fabric glues such as Fabric Fusion, Permanent Fabric Glue, and OK to Wash-It are the safest fabric glues with the lowest toxicity as they are non-carcinogenic, do not contain harsh solvents, and are nonflammable.
Fabric glues are made with acrylic as a main ingredient instead of resin, like Tacky Glue. Acrylic-based glue is more water-resistant and flexible than PVA glue, allowing it to hold up better in the wash.
Here is how to make cheesecloth ghosts with Aleene's Fabric Stiffener glue: You can form ghosts with balloons, foam balls, or other circular dimensional objects. If you are using a non-disposable object, you can protect the surface with plastic wrap or a plastic bag. Cut desired swatch size from cheesecloth. Pour Fabric Stiffener into a disposable bowl, and wearing gloves, dip cheesecloth swatches in the liquid to saturate. Wring out the excess. Drape saturated cheesecloth over circular object and let dry. Remove from form. Glue on facial features or use paint to create. Fabric Stiffener can also be thinned with water up to a 50/50 ratio and tinted with acrylic paint.

Wait until the paint is completely dry, and then apply steam. Letting it fully dry before using steam is essential to avoid an uneven result. To "puff" the product, preheat the iron to the hottest steam setting (note that the steam activates the paint). Hold the iron above your project, ensuring it does not touch, and then add steam until it rises. This will give the paint a fuller-looking super dimensional finish. You will know when it is done rising when the color changes from a glossy finish to a matte cloud-like effect.

Various factors can affect the time that it takes Puff Paint to dry. This includes the surface to which the paint was applied, its thickness, and the environment's temperature and humidity. To aid in the drying process, you can place your project in front of a fan but be careful not to be too close to disturb the paint. Also, be sure your room is dust free to avoid blowing dust into the wet paint. You can also use a blow dryer, using the lowest speed, and stay away at least 6 inches from your project. You can also place your painted project in the sunlight, being careful not to put it anywhere it could be disturbed by wind or other outdoor factors.

Yes, Puff Paint is permanent on most surfaces and can be hand and machine-washed on fabrics after drying and curing for 72 hours (about 3 days). Make sure to wash inside out in warm water on a gentle cycle, then air dry for longer-lasting results. If you are using Puff Paint on fabric, keep it away from other materials you do not want paint on, such as clothing, carpeting, etc., because it will not wash out of the fabric once dry. However, suppose you are working on hard, nonporous surfaces like glass, plastic, and glazed ceramics. In that case, Puff Paint can easily be wiped away before it dries. So, if you make a mistake, do not worry! Simply wipe away the paint with a damp paper towel and start over.
Unlike competitive products, Tulip Puff Paints do not require heat to cure or remain permanent on your fabrics or any other substrate. If you purchased the finish Puffy or Velveteen, instructions might have you add heat/steam to your paint to cause it to puff into a more cloud-like matte finish.

In contrast, soft paint is designed to be brushed onto fabrics for a lightweight and flexible feeling that more closely resembles the original feel of the material.
Tap the tip of the bottle firmly on a solid surface. Prepare the paint flow by squeezing a small amount out. Wipe the tip clean, and now you are ready to begin. Hold the bottle at an angle above the fabric for a larger, more pronounced line. This approach allows more paint to escape. Hold the bottle straight up and down and closer to the fabric for more control. You can also set rhinestones, buttons, and charms by squeezing a bead of paint about the same size as the item. Place the item directly onto the paint and press gently until the paint comes up around the edges to form a setting. Let dry flat.
Puff Paint dries with a dimensional finish that remains flexible enough to move with your fabric, even after repeat washing. Puffy paint is also durable enough for use on shoes and other hard surfaces like glass. Check out our techniques page to learn more about how to use Puff Paint as a DIY Window Cling.
To create dimensional lines, hold bottle like a pencil and gently hold tip to the surface. Always hold the applicator tip against the fabric, squeeze and drag tip along fabric surface so that paint seeps into fibers. This is what bonds the paint to the fabric. For raised line work, hold bottle at an angle, allowing more paint to escape. For flat line work, hold bottle straight up and down, allowing less paint to escape. To make a comma shape, hold bottle straight up and down and squeeze out a dot of color, pulling it toward you and quickly releasing pressure. Paint will naturally form a graduated tip. A comma can quickly turn into a heart by adding a second comma as a mirror image with tips touching. Dimensional designs need "flex points" on fabric for durability and movement. Do not make long continuous lines. Instead, make a 3-4" line, pick up the tip and start again by placing the tip just past the end of your first line. Repeat until you've created the desired length.
Occasionally, Puff Paint will crack or peel off the fabric. There are several causes for this: Your substrate has not been prewashed to remove sizing. The paint must be applied correctly (must make binding contact with the fabric). The project was washed at a water temperature that was too cold.
Occasionally Puff Paint cracks or peels off the fabric. There are several causes for this: the fabric has not been pre-washed, the paint has been applied improperly (never made binding contact with the fabric) or the project had been washed at too cold a temperature.
Puff Paint is formulated for permanent application on fabrics and a multitude of surfaces. However, Puff Paint can be easily removed with water while still wet.
Remove the tip, rinse in warm water and poke a T-pin down through the hole making an opening wide enough for the paint to flow through. If you simply poke a pin through the tip, without removing the clog, the clog will find its way to the tip again.

Once your order is processed and shipped, you will receive a shipping confirmation email for your order with tracking information. Please be sure to add our email to your email addresses and "Safe Senders" anti-spam list. If you do not receive either your order confirmation or shipping confirmation emails, please reach out to us at info@ilovetocreate.com.
If you receive a damaged or defective product, please contact us at info@ilovetocreate.com . We will be happy to help you!
