How To Tie Dye

How To Tie Dye

Accordion Tie-Dye Technique

Accordion Tie-Dye Technique

Easy and fun! You will love this tie-dye technique! Steps Step 1:   Gather your tie-dye kit, pre-washed 100% cotton T-shirt, disposable surface cover and plastic bag or wrap and you're ready to go! Step 2:   To mix your dyes, simply add tap water to the fill line on each bottle, replace the nozzles with the caps still on, and shake each bottle thoroughly until all dye powder dissolves. Wait to mix your dyes until you are ready to apply them. Dyes left unapplied for more than 72 hours might lose their concentration and therefore might not appear as vibrant after dyeing. Step 3: Lay your damp shirt out flat horizontally on your covered work surface. Starting on the side closest to you, accordion fold (over & under) the entire shirt in even folds, working your way to the other side. Step 4: Bind your folded T-shirt by wrapping rubber bands around it, evenly spacing your rubber bands several inches apart. You can even wrap more around your shirt closer together; the more rubber bands you use, the more white space and accordion tie-dye patterns you’ll have in between your dye areas. Step 5: It’s not a necessity, but if you have one, place your damp, bound T-shirt onto a wire rack before dyeing to help prevent the different dye colors from pooling underneath and potentially muddying the colors. We applied one dye color to the entire project in between rubber bands, but you can apply a different color to each bound section if you want, or alternate colors between each section. Get creative and have fun! Make sure to rotate your project as you apply your dyes to match colors on the other side. Once you’ve finished adding your dye(s) to your project, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for the dye to completely set. Step 6: After the dye colors have completely set, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions. Step 7: Fold your damp T-shirt in half vertically, then accordion pleat from the base of the shirt all the way to the top of the shirt, making sure to pleat the sleeves as well. Step 8: Bind your pleated shirt with rubber bands, wrapping them tightly around the shirt every 1 to 1.5 inches apart. Step 9: Place your bound T-shirt on a wire rack (if you have one), then apply your dye colors as desired to each banded section. Whatever color pattern you choose, make sure to rotate your project and match the colors on the back side. Once you’ve finished adding your dye(s) to your project, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for the dye to completely set. Step 10: After the dye colors have completely set, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions. Step 11: Lay your damp T-shirt out flat with the base of the shirt closest to you. Create small, tight accordion pleats starting at the base edge and working your way all the way up to the top of the shirt. Make sure to pleat the sleeves as well. Once you have the shirt tightly pleated, form it into an S-curve pattern, creating around 4 to 5 curves depending on the size of your shirt. Step 12: Bind your S-curved/pleated shirt with rubber bands. Use 2 rubber bands vertically around the center to hold in place, then crisscross 2 more rubber bands with the ends at each corner so the entire shirt is held secure. When using the ice tie-dye technique, we recommend placing your project on a wire rack over a bucket or bin to collect all of the dye and ice as it melts. Open your unmixed dye bottles and Step 13: After the ice has completely melted, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions.

Marbling Tie-Dye Technique Marble tie dye, also known as marble dyeing or marbling, is a fun technique that combines the art of tie-dyeing with swirling marbled patterns. It creates unique and abstract designs on fabric that resemble the natural patterns found in marble stone. This easy technique uses Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye with shaving cream to create colorful marbled designs! Steps Step 1: Before you get started on your marble tie-dye project, prewash and dry the substrate that you’ll be dyeing. Cover your work area with a protective surface and prepare your marble tie-dye station by filling a disposable tray with shaving cream. Use a spatula to spread the shaving cream evenly across the tray. Step 2: Remember to wear protective gloves when working with tie dye! Prepare your tie-dye solutions by adding water to the dye bottles, filling to the neck. Replace the cap tightly and shake well until dye powder is fully dissolved. You can use as many or as few colors as you’d like for marble tie-dye, but keep in mind how the colors mix to avoid muddied results. Drizzle a small amount of each color dye directly onto the shaving cream. Step 3: Use a wooden dowel or skewer to swirl and manipulate the colors on the shaving cream's surface. Create unique marbled patterns by dragging or combing through the dyes to achieve the desired effect. Each marble tie-dye project will have one-of-a-kind designs! Step 4: Carefully lay your substrate onto the surface of the marble dyed shaving cream. Gently press the fabric onto the surface to ensure the dyes are transferred. Step 5: Use a plastic bench scraper to remove excess shaving cream from your project and check out your marbled tie-dye designs! If needed, use a paper towel to clean off any additional product. Step 6: Repeat steps 2-5 to marble tie-dye the other side of your project. Let dry for the dyes to set completely. Step 7: Your marble tie-dye project is ready! Add a fun swirl of color to any outfit with your own marble tie-dye accessories. What projects will you customize with marble tie dye? Spiral Tie-Dye Technique

Spiral Tie-Dye Technique

Put a twist on tie dye with the spiral tie-dye technique! Whether you use one color or four, you'll love the winding effects! Steps Step 1: Once you have your item to tie dye, you do not have to presoak it in soda ash because Tulip One-Step Dyes already have soda ash in the mix. However, you should prewash your fabric before tie dyeing, especially if it’s new. New fabrics are coated in a chemical called sizing to help keep them wrinkle and stain free, but sizing can block the dye from fully absorbing into the fabric. Wash fabrics without fabric softener, which can also block dye absorption. Leave your T-shirt or fabric item damp for the tie-dye process. Step 2: Lay your damp T-shirt (or fabric) out flat onto your covered word surface. For a perfect center spiral, locate the center of the collar and the section just under the sleeves. This is your center point for your spiral tie dye! Pinch the fabric at this point and twist into a swirl. Keep twisting the fabric tightly until the entire shirt is formed into a spiral shape. Use 3 rubber bands to hold your spiraled shirt in place, crisscrossing the rubber bands to create 6 wedge shapes. Step 3: Wearing the plastic gloves from your kit, place your project on a wire rack if using. You can apply as many dye colors as wedge shapes created with the rubber bands, or as few as one dye color. There’s no wrong way to tie dye! However you decide to apply your dyes, flip over your spiral and match the dyes in the same color pattern on the back. Step 4: Place your dyed project into a sealable plastic bag or wrap in plastic wrap to keep it damp while the dye completely processes. This will take 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want to give it some extra time. Note: It’s important for the fabric to remain damp while the dye sets so it can fully absorb into the fabric fibers. Step 5: Once your dye has fully processed, remove the rubber bands and check out your spiral tie dye! Rinse, wash and dry according to your instruction guide.

Kaleidoscope Ice Tie-Dye Technique

Kaleidoscope Ice Tie-Dye Technique

Remember the fun colors and shapes from your childhood kaleidoscope? Now create them on a shirt using powdered dye and ice! Steps Step 1: Fold damp shirt in half lengthwise and press flat on tabletop. Step 2: Pinch shirt where you would like the center of your first spiral to be, then twist fabric a few times to create a small spiral. Step 3: Maintaining first spiral, pinch another section of shirt and twist several times to create a second spiral. Step 4: Crumple the remaining fabric towards the spirals. Step 5: Bind the shirt with rubber bands to hold secure. Step 6: Make a paper ring to fit around bound shirt. This will help keep the ice in place when dyeing. Step 7: Place ice on top of bound shirt. Step 8: Instead of adding water to dye bottles to mix, squeeze dye powder of a few colors on top of ice. Step 9: Let ice melt and remove paper ring. Step 10: Flip shirt over and repeat process on the backside with additional dye powders. Step 11: Once the backside has been dyed, cut off the rubber bands, then launder according to instructions.

Eyeball Tie-Dye Technique

Eyeball Tie-Dye Technique

Feast your eyes on this super fun technique with a way cool result! It’s just a slight twist on the bullseye technique that’s fun for Halloween and beyond! Step 1 Wash your shirt and leave damp. Lay it flat on your work surface. Step 2 Create an eyeball shape on a piece of scratch paper and cut it out. Make sure it's the size you want the design on your shirt to be. Fold the shirt in half lengthwise, then fold the eyeball cutout in half and place the fold of the eyeball shape on the fold of the shirt. Trace around it with a washable marker. Step 3 Create a circle pattern on another piece of scratch paper and cut out. This will be the iris of the eye. Fold in half and place the fold of the circle on the fold of the shirt in the center of the half-eye shape. Trace with a washable marker. Step 4 Use the washable marker to sketch a smaller half circle within the iris of the eye. This will be the pupil of the eye design. Step 5 Begin by pleating the smallest circle (the pupil), keeping the pleats along the marker line. Secure tightly with a rubber band. Step 6 Next, pleat along the second line (the iris) and secure tightly with a zip tie. Step 7 Pleat along the final marker line and secure with another zip tie. Step 8 Secure the remainder of the shirt with additional rubber bands if you would like to create additional sections of color beyond the eyeball design. You can add as many as you like! Step 9 Add black dye to the very tip of the shirt (the pupil section). Step 10 Add a stripe of black dye along the third binding. This will create the accent around the eye. Step 11 Add whatever color of dye you would like to the iris section of the eye. Add additional dye colors between the bound sections of the shirt to your liking. Step 12 Once all of the sections have been dyed, cover the shirt with plastic (or secure in a plastic zipper bag) to keep damp and allow to set 6 to 8 hours or longer. Rinse, cut off the zip ties/rubber bands and launder according to the dye instructions.

Two-Minute Tie-Dye Technique

Two-Minute Tie-Dye Technique

Speed up the dye set process from 8 hours to 2 minutes with the same vibrant results! Use this patent-pending process with any Tulip One-Step Dye for a faster way to tie dye. Steps Step 1 The Tulip Two-Minute Tie-Dye process – including the patent-pending containers – is designed to work with One-Step Dyes and 100% cotton fabrics ONLY. Make sure your 100% cotton item is completely damp in all areas before binding and adding dyes. Once all dyes have been added, double check that your item is still damp in all sections. If not, spritz with water to re-dampen, as any dry spots could scorch in the microwave. Place your dyed item into the microwaveable Two-Minute Tie Dye Container and snap it securely shut. Step 2 Place the closed Two-Minute Tie Dye Container into the microwave and set the processing time according to your microwave wattage and the size of your garment (the recommended processing time based on wattage and garment can be found on the chart in your Two-Minute Tie Dye instructions). Do not leave the microwave unattended while the microwave is processing. Step 3 After the processing time is complete, remove the Two-Minute Tie Dye Container from the microwave, keeping it closed. Note: the container will be hot, so wear oven mitts to protect hands and place the hot container on a surface that can withstand heat. Leave the lid closed and allow the container to cool for 15 minutes; this also allows for the dyes to completely saturate the fabric. After 15 minutes, open the container lid and allow the garment to cool for another 5 minutes or until cool to the touch. Remove the rubber bands from your garment and launder according to the instructions. Enjoy! Now that you know how to speed up the tie-dye process to just minutes instead of hours, it’s time to amp up your tie-dye creativity, don’t you think?! You don't have to stick to just tie-dye T-shirts; as long as you are tie dyeing 100% cotton fabric without any metal embellishments and you can fit it in the container, you can try Two-Minute Tie Dye on items like socks, scarves & hair accessories, tassels, baby garments and so much more!

Stripes Tie-Dye Technique

Stripes Tie-Dye Technique

Whether you want horizontal or vertical stripes, this simple tie-dye technique can be used with as many dye colors as you like! Steps Step 1: Wash shirt (or other fabric item) without fabric softener and leave damp. Since Tulip One-Step Tie Dye contains soda ash in the formula, there's no need to presoak your fabric before dyeing it! Lay your damp fabric out flat on your covered work surface and accordian pleat and fold fabric either vertically or horizontally. Step 2: Use rubber bands to secure your pleated fabric, evenly spacing rubber bands and adding as many as desired. You can space the rubber bands far apart for wider stripes, or close together for thin stripes. It's totally up to you! Step 3: Mix your desired Tulip One-Step Tie Dye colors according to instructions. With the striped tie-dye pattern, you can use as many dye colors as you want, whether it's one color or 6. Have fun and experiment - there's no wrong way to tie dye! Apply One-Step Tie Dyes to each banded section, alternating colors or skipping sections altogether if you want. Rotate your pleated fabric as you add dye, making sure to apply the dye on the underside and sides so all portions of the section are covered in dye. Let your tie dye set for 6 to 8 hours or longer for the dye to fully set. Tip: place in a sealed zipper bag or cover with plastic to keep damp while the dye processes for best results. After the dye has finished setting, launder according to instructions. Enjoy!
