Peace Sign Tie-Dye Technique

Steps

Step 1: Gather supplies

Gather your supplies for your peace sign tie-dye project.

Step 2: Prepare your project

Prewash the shirt that you’ll be dyeing, turn inside out, and lay the fabric flat on a protected work surface Prepare your tie-dye solutions by adding water to the dye bottles, filling to the neck. Replace the cap tightly and shake well until dye powder is fully dissolved.

Step 3: Mark center of shirt

To start the peace sign tie-dye technique, you’ll need to center your T-shirt. Fold the shirt in half vertically along the center. Mark the center spot with a washable marker, if needed.

Step 4: Fold shirt upward

Grab the inner bottom corner of the T-shirt while holding the center spot and fold upward toward the armpit of the T-shirt.

Step 5: Fold section back

Fold the bottom corner of your T-shirt back in half at an angle along the center spot.

Step 6: Fold shirt inward

Grab the neck of the shirt and fold inward to meet the bottom corner of your shirt while holding at the center spot. These layers of fabric will be the sections of your peace sign!

Step 7: Mark with washable marker

To create a perfect circle segment, tie a string to your marker and hold the string at the center spot. Use the string as a guide as you draw the segment.

Step 8: Pleat & tie

Pleat and fold your shirt along the drawn line, then tie with string.

Use the string to create two more equally spaced sections. Mark these sections with washable marker— they will outline your peace sign tie dye!

Step 10: Add dyes

Apply black dye along the marked areas to outline the peace sign, then fill the peace sign itself with sky-blue dye. We added a soft lemon-yellow halo around the peace sign before filling the remainder of the shirt with a lovely lavender dye! Be sure to flip your project and apply dyes to the backside of your shirt as well.

Step 11: Wrap & let set

Once you’ve finished applying dyes to your peace sign tie-dye tee, cover with plastic wrap or place your project into a sealable plastic bag. Allow the dyes to set for 6-8 hours or overnight for more vibrant results.

Step 12: Wash & reveal!

How To Tie Dye

Supplies: Tulip Tie-Dye Kit of Choice 100% natural fiber fabric item Protective surface cover Sealable bag or plastic wrap Washable marker (option) Step 1: Pick your project For a successful tie-dye project the most important thing is to make sure your item is made from 100% natural fibers like cotton, rayon, or silk. Once you have your item to tie dye, you do not have to presoak it in soda ash because our One-Step Dyes have been specially formulated to stay bright without the use of soda ash. However, you should prewash your fabric before tie dyeing, especially if it's new. Wash fabrics without fabric softener, which can also block dye absorption. You can either leave your item damp or dry it. Dry and minimally damp fabrics will result in sharper tie-dye patterns with less color blending. Damp fabrics allow the dye colors to flow through the fabric for more diffused dye patterns and color blending. Step 2: Prep your dye Tulip One-Step Dye bottles come with the dye powder in the bottles. To mix your dye, remove the nozzle and add tap water to the fill line on each bottle. Replace the nozzle with the cap still on and shake each bottle thoroughly until all dye powder dissolves. For refill packets, after dye bottle has been used, rinse out bottle, open dye packet wearing protective gloves, pour dye into bottle and continue with instructions above to mix and use. Wait to mix your dyes until you are ready to apply them. Dyes left unapplied for more than 24 hours might lose their concentration and might not appear as vibrant after dyeing. Step 3: Bind the fabric Lay your damp T-shirt (or fabric) out flat onto your covered work surface. Pick out a folding pattern you'd like to try; if you need some help deciding, we've got a whole page dedicated to different tie-dye techniques! Step 4: Apply dye Wearing the plastic gloves from your kit, place your project on a wire rack if using. You can apply as many dye colors as there are sections created with the rubber bands, or as few as one dye color. There's no wrong way to tie dye! However you decide to apply your dyes, flip over your project and match the dyes in the same color pattern on the back. Step 5: Let set Place your dyed project into a sealable plastic bag or wrap in plastic wrap to keep it damp while the dye completely processes. This will take 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want to give it some extra time. Note: It's important for the fabric to remain damp while the dye sets so it can fully absorb into the fabric fibers. Step 6: Rinse and wash Once the dye has fully processed, remove the rubber bands check out your tie dye! Rinse your project well to remove excess dye. Fill washer to "large load" setting with cold water and a small amount of laundry soap. Wash and dry separately. Your tie-dye creation is now ready to wear! Accordion Tie-Dye Technique

Easy and fun! You will love this tie-dye technique! Steps Step 1: Gather your tie-dye kit, pre-washed 100% cotton T-shirt, disposable surface cover and plastic bag or wrap and you're ready to go! Step 2: To mix your dyes, simply add tap water to the fill line on each bottle, replace the nozzles with the caps still on, and shake each bottle thoroughly until all dye powder dissolves. Wait to mix your dyes until you are ready to apply them. Dyes left unapplied for more than 72 hours might lose their concentration and therefore might not appear as vibrant after dyeing. Step 3: Lay your damp shirt out flat horizontally on your covered work surface. Starting on the side closest to you, accordion fold (over & under) the entire shirt in even folds, working your way to the other side. Step 4: Bind your folded T-shirt by wrapping rubber bands around it, evenly spacing your rubber bands several inches apart. You can even wrap more around your shirt closer together; the more rubber bands you use, the more white space and accordion tie-dye patterns you’ll have in between your dye areas. Step 5: It’s not a necessity, but if you have one, place your damp, bound T-shirt onto a wire rack before dyeing to help prevent the different dye colors from pooling underneath and potentially muddying the colors. We applied one dye color to the entire project in between rubber bands, but you can apply a different color to each bound section if you want, or alternate colors between each section. Get creative and have fun! Make sure to rotate your project as you apply your dyes to match colors on the other side. Once you’ve finished adding your dye(s) to your project, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for the dye to completely set. Step 6: After the dye colors have completely set, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions. Step 7: Fold your damp T-shirt in half vertically, then accordion pleat from the base of the shirt all the way to the top of the shirt, making sure to pleat the sleeves as well. Step 8: Bind your pleated shirt with rubber bands, wrapping them tightly around the shirt every 1 to 1.5 inches apart. Step 9: Place your bound T-shirt on a wire rack (if you have one), then apply your dye colors as desired to each banded section. Whatever color pattern you choose, make sure to rotate your project and match the colors on the back side. Once you’ve finished adding your dye(s) to your project, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for the dye to completely set. Step 10: After the dye colors have completely set, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions. Step 11: Lay your damp T-shirt out flat with the base of the shirt closest to you. Create small, tight accordion pleats starting at the base edge and working your way all the way up to the top of the shirt. Make sure to pleat the sleeves as well. Once you have the shirt tightly pleated, form it into an S-curve pattern, creating around 4 to 5 curves depending on the size of your shirt. Step 12: Bind your S-curved/pleated shirt with rubber bands. Use 2 rubber bands vertically around the center to hold in place, then crisscross 2 more rubber bands with the ends at each corner so the entire shirt is held secure. When using the ice tie-dye technique, we recommend placing your project on a wire rack over a bucket or bin to collect all of the dye and ice as it melts. Open your unmixed dye bottles and Step 13: After the ice has completely melted, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions.
