The Ultimate Glow-in-the-Dark DIY Roundup: 20+ DIY Project Ideas

Glow in the Dark Pumpkins

Glow in the Dark Pumpkins

It's almost Halloween and you know what that means!!! TIME FOR PUMPKINS! Not just regular pumpkins, GLOW IN THE DARK PUMPKINS! Every year I look forward to buying tons of plastic pumpkins and creating new designs. I like the artificial pumpkins for the simple fact that they will last forever. You can store them in nice containers and re-use them year after year. How great is that!Tulip has an amazing glow in the dark paint that is the great. This craft is great for kids to do and you will watch the amazement on their face when you put them under or near a black light! Let's get started! Update: Since this glow pumpkin was posted, it's become the most popular post on our blog! YAY! You can also check out some more pumpkins I did HERE! What you need: Tulip Glow in the Dark Paint Plastic Pumpkins (Real ones will work as well but you will eventually have to throw them away, keep that in mind) Step One: Gather all of the Glow in the Dark paints that you want to use...here's a great KIT if you want a lot of colors to play with. I like adding all of the colors and creating a cluster of pumpkins. The more the merrier! Step Two: If you purchased artificial pumpkins I suggest painting them white. This is optional however the glow in the dark paint looks great on white pumpkins even when not under a black light. Step Three: If you purchases pumpkins with long stems you can easily cut it off and paint the tip to make it look more like a normal stem. This is optional. I used acrylic paint for my pumpkins but keep in mind you will have to add 2-3 coats in order to get a full coverage. Step Four: Once your pumpkins are dry you can create all the designs you want on your pumpkins. I wanted to make this batch fun and whimsical so I added dots, stars and spiderwebs with the Tulip Glow Paint! Step Five: To create this spider web effect you simple draw lines from the top of pumpkin stem to the bottom of pumpkins then connect each lines with little frowned smiles (at least that is my best explanation). How cool do these look in the end! It's so amazing seeing how they look when not under a black light then seeing them under that black light! It's night and day. This is also a fun project for the whole family. Everyone can create their own pumpkin then in the end you have a family of them that you can keep forever. Just keep adding to your bunch every year! Another tip is if you have a black light, set it up and apply your paint while under the black light. You can really see the full effect of the colors by doing this. This is optional however! This a great project to express your true personality. If you love polka dots, stripes, squares, x's and o'x or any other design now is the time to bring them out of your head and onto the pumpkins. Another fun tip you can do is paint the stem with Glow in the Dark Paint. It makes a huge difference when under the black light. How beautiful do our paints look under a black light! Great tip to do before getting started is put all the colors you purchased under a black light so you can see the full color effect before you create your pumpkins. The colors change drastically so this is great to do. Putting them to the actual test, under a black light. I am so pleased with how they came out. This Glow in the Dark paint is magnificent! I love how each color lights up differently. I think the green paint is my favorite. To me, it actually shows up the best under a black light. Keep in mind you will not always have the pumpkins under or around a black light so I wanted to show you a picture of what they look like in normal light. I personally think they are just as beautiful. I love adding embellishments to the pumpkins and nothing screams Halloween like spiders. Add a little paint on your spiders and they will add a nice touch to pumpkins. Don't you just love how they came out! You can make necklaces with these spiders, earrings, rings or even a cute banner! I think it's fascinating how different they look with and without the black light! Quick Tip: If you plan on making multiple pumpkins that will all go together, I suggest getting different sizes to put all together. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and I can't wait to see what you create for Halloween! Don't forget to tag us with #ilovetocreate on any social media site! Check out all of our glow in the dark projects HERE. Huge glittery hugs, JADERBOMB

DIY Glow in the Dark Spiderweb Necklace

Halloween is right around the corner, and you know what that means! Time to turn all things ordinary a little spooky, adorn your house with spiders, and of course create fabulous costumes! This DIY Glow in the Dark Spiderweb Necklace is easy to make and super fun to wear. Using Tulip's Glow in the Dark Fabric Paint, it's so fun and easy, so get ready to make creepy creatures and costumes to add a little macabre to this holiday season! Let's get started! What you need: Tulip Glow in the Dark Dimensional Fabric Paint Tulle fabric Scissors Pattern Wax paper Tape Ribbon Step 1 Print out your pattern and tape it down flat. Step 2 Place a sheet of wax paper over your pattern, secure it with tape. Step 3 Lay your tulle fabric on top of your pattern and wax paper, secure your tulle with tape. Step 4 It’s helpful to shake your tubes of paint before you begin to get any air bubbles out. You can also test it out on a paper towel first to get a feel for working with these paints. Be careful not to drag the tip of your paint tube along the fabric. Using your Tulip Glow in the Dark Dimensional Fabric Paint start tracing over the lines of your pattern. The colors I used are: Natural for the spiderweb Green Glow for the spider Pink for the center of the spider Step 5 Let your paint dry for a few hours or overnight to make sure it’s completely dry. Step 7 Cut around your spiderweb, trimming off all excess fabric. Step 8 Cut two small slits on either end of your spiderweb. Run a piece of ribbon through either side, you will use this ribbon to tie your necklace on.

Glittering Gem Mason Jars Lights

Glittering Gem Mason Jars Lights

I've always been a sucker for interesting lighting. I love pieces that are conversation starters, are so unique that I often get asked where it came from and lighting that throws an interesting glow around it when lit up. These mason jar glittering lights are great for several reasons. They are solar powered so they can light up every night without needing to flip a switch. This makes them great for the outdoors. But bring them in next to your bedside table and you'll have a lovely glow with the most gorgeous colors splayed out across your nightstand. These are, by far, my most favorite mason jar craft of all time! Save What you need: For this project you will need: Aleene's Glass & Bead Adhesive (please excuse my well used tube :) Colorful glass gems (look in the floral department at craft stores and places like Walmart) Mason jar (smooth jars work the best) Masking tape (optional but helpful) Mason jar solar lights (see how I made mine for $1 here) Just a few short years ago you couldn't find too many colors of these glass gems. Since they've become more popular in craft projects you're finding some really pretty colors these days. I had a hard time choosing between purple or "peacock variety" that had purples, blues and greens. In the end I went with the simple purple and I'm quite happy with the results. Since the light cast by modern solar lights is more white than blue these days, you can get colors that are more true to the shade of your gems than in the past. Smooth glass mason jars are easy enough to find at craft stores and in the craft sections of stores like Walmart. While not completely necessary it does make this project easier in the end. These smooth jars can often be purchased singly. Begin gluing your stones onto the sides of your jar, taking care to leave the threads of the jar for the lid free. To be honest, it would be difficult to glue them there, anyway. While I was working on my jars it was storming and really, really humid which meant slow dry time. That meant that my stones would slip down a little bit and not dry exactly where I had wanted to place them. If you find yourself in a similar position, either due to working quickly or a humid environment, masking tape can help hold the stones in place as they dry. Once fully covered, before using allow the stones a day or so to cure. Add solar mason jar lids and you'll have the prettiest display at night without needing to turn anything on! You can purchase these at craft stores, or you can see how I made my own using Aleene's The Ultimate for only a buck apiece! With a combination of purple and clear stones I got a texture that can't be beat. They look wonderful when paired but are quite elegant when a single jar is placed, also. Take care to keep your jars from extreme heat or cold and they will last you ages!

Easy Popsicle Stick Art

Easy Popsicle Stick Art

What is is about wooden popsicle sticks that makes everyone want to craft up something fun? But hold on to holiday ornaments my friends, this is a project you will want to hang on your wall year round! Using regular pantry-grade food coloring and Aleene's glue, we can make a sophisticated art piece that is as easy as it is impressive. It feels summery. It feels coastal. It feels AWESOME. Want to make one? Come on now! What you need: Tacky Glue 20" square canvas 200+ wooden Popsicle sticks (you'll need more than you would think!) Food coloring Glass jars Water Mix 20 drops of food coloring with two cups of water. Repeat in five different jars to make 5 different shades of similar-ish colors. Here we made separate dye baths for kelly green, lime green, turquoise, aqua, and teal, but the possibilities are endless! Soak the sticks in the food coloring for one hour, flipping or removing half way through. Color intensity will vary depending on the water/ food coloring ratio. Experimenting and blending colors is a good thing! You may even want to double dip some sticks to get more color varieties. Squeeze an extra heavy line of Tacky Glue along the bottom of the canvas. Add sticks in an uneven line. Add a second round of Tacky Glue and add more sticks, staggering slightly. Repeat, repeat, repeat! Dry overnight, and dont forget the sides. Shazam! The more variations in color, the more elegant the final results. Hang, enjoy, and wait for your friends to be impressed!

How to Glue Metal to Wood - DIY Triangle Shelves

How to Glue Metal to Wood – DIY Triangle Shelves

This project brings metal, wood and geometric awesome-ness all together to decorate almost any room in your home! What you need: 2x4 wood boards Aleene's The Ultimate Multi-Surface Adhesive Aleene's Wood Glue Decorative metal sheeting Staple gun Sanding block Wood putty Wood stain So the idea of making triangle shaped shelves seemed amazing but trying to actually, physically make them without any particularly fabulous math skills proved to be a bit difficult! Wanting 3 equilateral triangle shelves we had to put on our thinking caps to make things work. Once we figured out the math things came together quite well. To form each of our triangle shelves we cut 3 pieces of 2x4 pine boards into 11 5/8", 12" and 13 1/8". If you have a simpler way to form the triangles we'd love to hear about it in the comments! To make 3 shelves the same size as ours you'll need to grab two 2x4x8 wood studs. To achieve the proper shape, you'll want to cut each board as shown above. Each end is a 30 degree angle. We used a power mitre saw, but you can easily use a hand saw and a mitre box to keep this project incredibly budget friendly. Once your boards are cut they should piece together to make a triangle. If you find that one side is a bit too long to fit, simply use a sander to take off a small amount of wood at a time until the pieces sit fairly flush. If making multiple shelves it's a good idea to mark the backside of each set with the same number, letter or symbol to keep each set together. Piecing the shelves perfectly might be difficult if you have to keep grabbing piece after piece trying to make it work like a puzzle! Once all boards are cut you'll need to sand down the cut edges to make them nice and smooth. Place a healthy amount of Aleene's Wood glue on the end of your first cut piece. Place your pieces together to form the first part of your triangle shape. Add glue to your last piece and finally form the triangle shape. Continue for your other shelves and allow each to sit upright and dry at least 24 hours without being moved. To reinforce the glue's hold, use a staple gun on the 3 corners attaching where the two pieces meet. Apply wood putty to where your pieces join to hide the seam. Allow to dry completely and then sand smooth with your sanding block. Stain your wood and allow to dry 24 hours. This color is fabulously neutral Special Walnut and is a great color for wood. This is a decorative metal sheet purchased at Hobby Lobby using a half off coupon. There is enough metal here to back 3 shelves. They also sell these sheets at the hardware store but they are sturdier and more difficult to cut and much more expensive. Trace the outside shape of your shelf onto the metal. You can use alcohol and a clean rag to remove any permanent marker lines you might accidentally get onto your wood! Oops! Using metal snips (these are from the craft store) cut out the shape of your metal backing. Cut just inside the mark you made so that the triangle will fit on the back without overlapping the sides. FYI - this metal is sharp and will cut you. It is advisable to wear protective gloves and protective eyewear. Apply The Ultimate Glue around the back side of your shelf. Press your metal onto the glue and use weight to help hold into place. Allow the glue to dry a few hours. If using heavy items on your shelves, it is a good idea to further attach the metal using a staple gun tapped in each of the corners. There are many ways to hang your shelves but here we've used Monkey Hooks. These hooks are taken and pushed through the sheet-rock on the pointy side leaving a hook sticking out of the wall. The shelves can then be hung by the hooks as they come out of the wall. If you're slightly too high or too low, just move the piece up or down a slot in the pattern of your metal! Since the shelves are made from 2x4, they are fairly shallow. And, to be honest we were looking at them more as decor items with a strong emphasis on the metal backing on their own than hugely helpful shelves. The shelves work so well in the space with our lime green sofa and mid-century modern inspired furniture... ... and of course that cactus terrarium I made, too! For less than not that much money we have 3 shelves that you'd pay top dollar for in a store and we couldn't be more pleased with them!

Picture of Elegant Swirl Ornaments

Elegant Swirl Ornaments

That box of ornaments you bought last year still gathering dust in the garage? Turn them into elegant, colorful glass ornaments using Tulip Slick Dimensional Fabric Paint! What you need: Tulip Shiny Puff Paint Glass ornaments Bamboo skewers Foam sheet to stick the skewers into Ribbon (optional) Carefully remove the metal topper from the glass ornament. Keep this handy – you’ll need to replace it after the paint is dry so you can hang the ornament. Holding the glass ornament in your hand, start drawing swirls all over the ornament using Tulip Shiny Puff Paint. I like to start at the opening in the glass, where I removed the metal topper. Once you’ve covered about half of the glass ornament with paint swirls, it gets trickier to hold the ornament. Stick a bamboo skewer into a sheet of craft foam and slip the ornament onto the skewer. Continue adding paint swirls until the entire ornament is covered. Allow the ornament to dry for at least an hour before handling. Insert the metal topper into the top of the of the ornament. Tie a ribbon in a bow to the wire loop sticking out of the top of the topper. Then add a wire ornament hook and display on the tree. You can make sets of these in a single color, in multiple colors, or make the swirls on the one ornament with various colors of paint.

Winter Sensory Bottle

Winter Sensory Bottle

I have two little boys with strong emotions so we've been using sensory bottles for years to help them get a handle on how to calm themselves when they feel out of control. Turns out they work great for children and adults alike! I thought it would be fun to make different themed bottles for each of the seasons, beginning with this Winter Sensory Bottle. What you need: Aleene's® Clear Gel Tacky Glue® Recycled Plastic Bottle (label Various Glitter Food Coloring (optional) Warm Water Duct Tape Pour entire bottle of Aleene's Clear Gel Tacky Glue into your recycled container. Keep in mind that adjusting the amount of glue you use will alter the time it takes for the glitter to settle (less glue = quicker settle, more glue = longer settle). Pour a dash or two of each glitter color. I added some fun snowflakes since I was making a winter-themed sensory bottle. Add warm water until entire container is filled and secure lid. The warmer temperature will help separate the glitter from the glue quicker. Use a strip of duct tape around the entire lid to prevent any accidental spillage. Fold excess tape over the tip of the lid until flat. Give the bottle a few strong shakes to fully incorporate the contents. I dare you to try and not be completely mesmerized by the swirling patterns! Your Winter Sensory Bottle is done! Now you can introduce it as a calming mechanism the next time one of your kids is feeling a bit out of control. The larger glitter pieces will sink within a few seconds and the entire bottle within five minutes. The perfect amount of time to calm any spirit!

You don’t want to make it too thick or it will take forever to dry, but don’t make it too thin either or you’ll have a problem peeling it off your freezer paper. step 4 Create swirls and the design for your necklace. step 5 Before your necklace dries press your rhinestones into the wet paint. Let your paint dry completely before wearing. Carefully peel it off the freezer paper, make sure that it doesn’t fold over or touch itself or it will stick.

Shimmer Heart Tie-Dye Tee

Shimmer Heart Tie-Dye Tee

It's easy to wear your heart on your tee when it looks this good! Let your love of fashion shine with a tie-dye tee that's totally tricked out with glitter galore. Read on for the tutorial! Wash your T-shirt to remove the sizing from the fabric (it can prevent the dye from fully soaking into the fabric, so this is a very important step!). Remove your damp shirt from the washing machine and lay it out flat on your covered work surface. Using a washable marker, create diagonal lines across the front of your shirt. (Don't worry, the ink will wash out!) Pleat the shirt fabric along each of the lines and bind with rubber bands from the kit. Mix up the Turquoise and Blue dyes according to the package instructions, then squeeze Turquoise dye on one side of each of the rubber bands as shown. Squeeze Blue dye onto the remaining sections next to the rubber bands. Cover your shirt with plastic (or put in a zipper bag) and let set for the recommended time. Then rinse, wash and dry your shirt according to the instructions. Create a heart on a piece of freezer paper and cut out to create a stencil. Iron it onto the front of your shirt to temporarily hold it in place. Insert another piece of freezer paper or cardboard inside of your dry shirt to prevent glue seeping through to the backside. Working in small sections at a time, dab Glitter Bond onto the shirt inside of the heart stencil. Immediately sprinkle silver glitter onto the adhesive while it is still wet. Continue the process until the entire heart is covered in glitter. Then remove the stencil and let your shirt dry completely before wearing. Shine on, my friend!

Comfort meets cool with an abstract tie-dye design in beautiful shades of blue. Wash dress and leave damp. Lay out flat on covered work surface and smooth out wrinkles. Use marker to draw a few random lines and circles on dress. Pleat along these lines and secure with zip ties. Scrunch remainder of dress into random, flat bundle and secure with rubber bands. Mix dyes according to package directions. Apply Blue dye along zip tied sections of dress. Pour a small amount of Turquoise into extra mixing bottle and fill with water. Add additional dye or water to create a light shade of turquoise. Test on scrap fabric until desired shade is achieved. Repeat above step with Green dye. Apply diluted dyes randomly to scrunched sections of dress. Apply full-strength dyes sparingly to accent. Cover dyed dress with plastic and let set 6-8 hours. Remove bands and zip ties from dress, and rinse under running water to remove excess dye. Wash and dry dress as fabric requires.

Going Coastal Fabric Spray Tee

Going Coastal Fabric Spray Tee

Stay cool in the crazy summer heat with clothing that's nautically nice! Stripes in shades of blue always remind us of beachy fun, even if we're nowhere near the sand and surf. Even better, you can make your own designer-looking threads for half the price in a few easy steps! Wash and dry a plain white T-shirt to remove the protective sizing from the fabric. (This is an important step because the sizing can block the fabric from absorbing the spray paint.) Then lay your shirt out flat on a covered work surface and add strips of painter's tape horizontally across the entire shirt. Place a piece of wax paper or freezer paper inside of shirt to prevent paint from soaking through to the backside. Spray a light, even coat of ColorShot across exposed fabric. Let dry for a few minutes and repeat with another light coat of color. Remove strips of tape and let shirt dry completely before wearing. Now you're ready to hit the town in cool coastal style!

Scrunch the damp shirt into a tight bunch then bind with rubber bands to keep fabric scrunched tightly together. Add dye randomly onto scrunched fabric. Flip and repeat on backside. One you've added dye to your liking, cover the shirt with plastic to keep damp and let set for 6 to 8 hours or longer for best results. Follow kit instructions for laundering. Once the shirt has been washed and dried, iron it smooth. Transfer the pattern onto a sheet of freezer paper and cut out with a craft knife to create a stencil, then iron the pattern waxy side down onto the front of your shirt. Brush paint over stencil openings. Remove stencil and let paint dry completely. Now you're ready to put some pep in your step!

Put Your Hand in Mine T-shirt

Put Your Hand in Mine T-shirt

Put it all into perspective by making a daddy/child handprint tee. You’ll mark the moment forever with how little they are and give Dad something he’ll always wear with a smile. Iron a large piece of freezer paper to inside front of shirt. This creates a stable crafting surface and prevents paint from bleeding through to back of shirt. Pour Marine Blue onto foam plate. Have Dad press his hand into paint and then press hand onto front of shirt. Allow to dry. Pour Lime onto another paper plate and have child press hand onto paint and then over Dad’s handprint. Allow to dry. Use Black fabric marker to write “Dad” below handprints. Remove freezer paper from inside shirt. Share this:

Dad's day is right around the corner and if you are looking for a fun craft for dad to proudly display in his office or man cave, this cute canvas might just be a good bet! This is a perfect Mommy and me project that you can do together and you can easily modify this idea for more handprints if you have more than one kid too! And the cool thing is it only takes 30 minutes from start to finish! What you need: – Tulip Slick Dimensional Fabric Paint in Black – Tulip Soft Fabric Paint in Royal Blue – Tulip Paintbrushes – Foam sticker heart – 12 x 12 White Canvas – Styofoam or paper plate Squeeze out Soft Paint onto plate. Use enough to generously cover the palm of your child's hand. Remove sticker from back of foam heart and apply in bottom center of canvas. Cover child's hand using paintbrush with the Tulip Soft Paint. Do this quickly because the paint dries fast. Firmly have child press hand over foam heart. Have adult help in this process to get a clean, unmessy print. Lift hand up to reveal design. If any areas are not defined after you reveal, you can use some paint and your paintbrush to touch up! Lift up foam heart. Have Mom help write the words "I love you with all my heart" above the hand design. We played around with uppercase and lowercase handwriting, but you can write it however you wish. If the child is older, they might want to write the phrase themselves with the Tulip paint. Just make sure they pencil on the design or practice on a sheet of paper before they start! Of course, let this project dry (it only takes a couple hours) before you "hand" off to dad! We think this project will definitely pull at Dad's heartstrings, don't you? After all, the best gifts truly come from the heart!

6 Ways To Transform Your Ornaments With Puffy Paint

6 Ways To Transform Your Ornaments With Puffy Paint

Looking for some super cute ways to decorate your ornaments this season that won't break the bank? Whip up some adorable ornaments in minutes using a craft closet staple - Puffy Paint! Now, when we talk about Puffy Paint, we actually are talking 3D Fabric Paint! We make several brands of this paint, but recommend the Scribbles or Puffy Paint brand, which can be found at your local craft store! This pack is perfect for this project and gives you a wide variety of paints to get crafty with! There's also another 20 pack that has iridescent and glitter finishes you might like as well.Another thing to consider before starting this project, is having an ornament hanger on hand for letting your ornament dry. You can buy a 6 pack like this one on Amazon -or- make your own from a wire hanger. Another idea is to get a piece of foam like Margot did for her ornaments in this ornament post, then you poke wooden skewers into the foam. You simply let your ornaments dry upside down. There are a lot of possibilities for "puffy painting" your ornaments. Here's a few ideas that are simple and so easy to try! Add a few lines and squiggles for a super simple ornament. For this one, from the top, we drew four teal lines and connected them at the bottom of the ornament. Then in between each line, we added a colorful squiggle. It doesn't get eassier than this! For this leaf-inspired design, from the top of your ornament paint 4 one inch lines of dimensional paint like the 12-3-6 and 9 hands of a clock. Take your next color of paint and draw a petal leaf shape all the way around the first line of paint. Follow that paint color up with another color of paint, then another to make this pretty leaf-like appearance. You could also slightly modify the shape of this design by making it more scalloped and curved if you wish! Make this diamond ornament in minutes. Start off by creating your dots and diamonds in the middle of your ornament. We made seven going all the way around the ornament. Then we zig-zagged around those diamonds in an alternating color. After you've done that zig-zagged diamonds add another zigzag row to top and bottom. Accent with more dots! This simple ornament is perfect in polka dots! Simply squeeze on the paints in random dot sizes all over your ornament. If you notice, we chose to make our red dots smaller than the teal dots. It's up to your preference on colors and positioning, just make sure not to apply too large of dots, or your paint may start dripping down your ornament if too much is applied. These might just be the simplest snowflakes to make ever. Start by squeezing 8 dots in a circular pattern with the paint. Then connect each dot to it's opposite dot! Easy peasy. Swirls are so much fun to make and are addicting. They are kinda like creating loopy C's, G's and E lettering! Change them up by squeezing them clockwise and counter-clockwise, rotating as you go.The cool thing about using dimensional paint is that you can wipe it off if you make a mistake, so it's pretty much full-proof!What other dimensional designs can you dream up to decorate your ornament? We'd love to know in the comments below!!!!

How To Dye Sun Faded Patio Furniture

How To Dye Sun Faded Patio Furniture

I nabbed an amazing piece of vintage patio furniture at a Salvation Army last year. The problem was the color of the canvas on the chair and footstool looked like it had been sitting in the sun since 1978. Enter Tulip One-Step Extra Large Dye. This was just what I needed to add a pop of color back to my chair and footstool. SUPPLIES – Tulip One-Step Extra Large Fabric Dye – Canvas Chair – Water Hose In most cases when dying something you would pre-wash it to remove any sizing. That was hard to do since the canvas was attached to my chair and stool. Instead I just rinsed it well with a water hose. While my chair was still wet I saturated all the fabric in dye. I let this sit overnight on the chair. The next day I rinsed the chair and stool well with a water hose until the water ran clear. Just to be sure no wet swimmers sat in the chair and walked away red I also gently scrubbed the chair with dish soap and water. My once faded chair now zings with color and looks amazing on my patio. Now I'm debating give my patio couch cushions the shibori treatment! Check out more fun from Jennifer Perkins on her blog.
