DIY Teacher Appreciation Gift with Tacky Glue

DIY Teacher Appreciation Gift with Tacky Glue

Whether it’s back-to-school season, Teacher Appreciation Week or the end of the school year, we love to celebrate our teachers and the hard work they do! This cute shadowbox teacher appreciation gift idea from LuluMake comes together easily with Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue and your own creative touch. Your student can get in on the DIY fun too by helping make the project or creating a special card to go with the gift! What you need: - Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue - Shadowbox - Wooden peg doll - Acrylic paints of choice + paintbrush - Felt pompoms - Paintbrush or pencil for a shadowbox decoration - Animal-shaped ruler or bookmark - Small tubes of paint - Beads - Wood letters to spell teacher’s nameStep 1 Before you get started on the teacher appreciation gift, LuluMake suggests asking your child about their teacher’s favorite colors and school subjects as a way to decide what to include. Or you can use items that reflect your child’s academic interests or what they’re learning about/have learned about during the school year. Step 2 Paint a wooden peg doll with acrylic paints to represent your student or their teacher, or simply however youd like to paint it! When its dry, apply Tacky Glue to the back side and press in place on your shadowbox base. Step 3 Rainbows are a colorful way to represent cheer and happy memories! Use your pompoms to create a rainbow around the wooden peg doll, gluing each in place in color order. Step 4 If your child likes math or maybe their favorite teacher is a math teacher you can include numbers in the shadowbox design, or other items like paintbrushes and pencils to represent other subjects or a school theme in general. Step 5 Next glue the teachers name along the top of the frame using wood letters. Tip from LuluMake: Dont worry if you accidentally apply too much glue and some seeps out when you press the items in place. You can easily wipe the glue away with a damp cloth or cotton swab while its still wet! Step 6 Continue gluing school-themed items around the frame, such as rulers, paint tubes and other colorful objects that represent your child or their teacher. Step 7 Once everything has completely dried, assemble the shadowbox and gift it to your childs teacher. We know theyll love such a thoughtful, heart-made gift! This is some A+ creativity, dont you think? Step 8 What teacher appreciation gifts are you making with Aleenes Original Tacky Glue? Tag your creations @aleenesdiy and share with us!

Button Art Apple

Button Art Apple

Have you tried button art before?! If not, you need to! It's super fun, super easy, and the possibilities are endless. This apple is a super fun idea for back-to-school and a great way to greet that new teacher, or make yourself classroom art. You'll have a blast making it! What you need: Tacky Glue Cardstock and pencil Buttons in project colors (I used red, green, and brown) Beads in colors that coordinate with buttons Draw a light outline of the shape you'd like to create with your button art. Work in sections by adding a generous amount of tacky glue and then placing buttons onto the glue. Keeping working in sections to fill the shape. Once you have filled one layer of your shape, begin a second layer of buttons. This will help fill in your shape and give it more of a solid color. You can also use the beads in the small areas to fill in and give added shape and dimension. As you work around, be sure to try to cover up your pencil lines. Repeat those steps for each color-blocked section of your shape. Here I filled in the red apple, then the green leaf, then the brown stem. You can see how the second layer really adds to the project. I only used a single layer on the stem. To display, I used a frame with the glass removed. Optional personalization: add a teacher's name to the mat of the frame! Display on a school desk and enjoy!

Covering the wreath with felt will help the pom poms adhere to your DIY Christmas wreath! Step 2 Make your own pom poms Step 2 Make your own pom pomsNow youll make the pom poms for your DIY Christmas wreath! To make two different sizes, cut your cardboard into 3-inch and 4-inch squares. Wrap yarn tightly around either cardboard square until its very full more yarn makes a fluffier pom pom! Gently pull the bundle of yarn off the cardboard and tie the center tightly with a chenille stem. Use scissors to cut the loops of yarn, then gather all the yarn in one hand and trim the ends to the same length to create a perfectly round pom pom. Wooden Front Door Organizer

Wooden Front Door Organizer

If I don't have some place to put something the very moment I walk in the front door, I'm going to lose it. The number of hours I've spent searching for my purse, or keys, or sunglasses might very well astound you. It didn't take long for me to figure out I needed an organizer of sorts and I purchased a set of drawers and a coat rack that have served me well through the years. But now that Rob and I are sharing a home it isn't working out quite as well and since our new space can be a bit awkward we're rocking the drawers and coat rack on different walls so things are spread out. I decided to take ready cut boards from the hardware store to make a new wall organizer that would meet our specific needs. We now have an area just for our mail (which seems to get lost constantly), two sets of keys, a little shelf for our sunglasses and hooks for our jackets, my purse and our dog leashes. In the end, I'm happier with this decorative yet functional bit of wall decor than I ever would have imagined! What you need: Aleene's Wood Fusion Bar drawer pull, 8.75" Cabinet knobs Clevis grab hooks 2.5" bolts + matching nuts Fine tooth hand saw Wooden paint stirrers Poplar wood boards Staple gun with deep staples (1/2" works well) 1 1/4" #6 wood screws Wood stain (I used Puritan Pine) Power drill 2 heavy duty sawtooth hangers Cut list for Poplar boards: 3/4" x 12" x 2' (back) 3/4" x 6" x 2' (shelf) 3/4" x 2" x 2' (lip for hooks) 3/4" x 2" x 10.25" (shelf for mail) Grab your bottle of Aleene's Wood Fusion and head to the hardware store. This project uses pre-cut boards, with only a single cut needing to be made at home. The one cut you will be making uses a hand-held saw meaning you only need a drill to complete this great intro wood working project! Take your two largest boards (3/4" x 12" x 2' and 3/4" x 6" x 2') and place them together to form a corner like you see above. The larger board will rest on the smaller. Run a line of Aleene's Wood Glue on the side of the longer board and then place in a safe area where the glue can dry and the pieces can become bonded together. This is best done overnight. To reinforce where your two boards are connected to make the shelf shape tack down the seam on the back side with a heavy duty staple gun. Using your hand saw cut various lengths of paint stirrers. Be sure to cut the indentation area of the handle away leaving only straight pieces of wood. Attach the wood to your backing board, laying out in a pleasing pattern and cutting to length as needed, with a healthy squeeze of Wood Fusion to the backside of each piece. Once covered allow the glue to dry at least 4 hours. Turning your shelf upside down glue your 3/4" x 2" x 2 piece onto the bottom of the shelf. This is going to create a lip that we will be attaching our coat hooks to later on down the line. You might need to hang the piece on the edge of a table, play with the piece until you find a good way to make that bottom shelf nice and flat. Allow the glue to dry, overnight is best. The mail holding area is created using a small piece of wood, to act as a shelf, and a bar shaped drawer pull to keep the mail together on that shelf. Place your drawer pull on the upper left portion of the organizer and then glue your 3/4" x 2" x 10.25" board 2-4 inches below where you'd like to place the bar. Allow the glue to dry at least 2 hours. Once dry, pre-drill holes through the back into the small shelf. Secure the wood in place with #6 screws through the holes you just made. Cut paint sticks to length and cover the front lip that overhangs on the front of the organizer, using Aleene's Wood Fusion to attach. Allow the glue to dry, overnight is best. Drill through the back side and then attach your drawer pull above the shelf. On the right side of the unit pre-drill pilot holes and attach your knobs to act as keychain holders. Use a 1/2" bit to drill holes down the lip for each of your coat hooks. These are clevis grab hooks and they are going to add a fun, industrial bit of style to our organizer. You can find these near chain in the hardware store. Remove the pin by pulling the piece that looks like a bobby pin out. Run your 2" long bolts through each hook and in through the hole you drilled. Run your nut onto the bolt to secure the hook onto the lip. Remove all hardware and stain to your satisfaction. I used Puritan Pine, a new favorite! Allow to fully dry and seal with polyurethane, if you wish. Re-attach your hooks, knobs and pulls and add sawtooth hangers to the back to finish this guy up. To properly hang this piece use screws into the studs or use the appropriate anchors that can handle the weight of the piece plus everything you plan to add to it under normal use. There is plenty of room for several pairs of sunglasses, a handful of mail and quite a few jackets or leashes!

Learn All About Glue's History and Interesting Facts

Learn All About Glue's History and Interesting Facts

Glue is the sticky stuff that holds things together. Glue is particularly useful for crafting, hobbies and household repairs, and can be mixed with other substances to create slime or applied to a small cut to form a makeshift bandage. In fact, glue has hundreds of usesit's no wonder that there are a few tubes of glue in every classroom, office supply room, kitchen, and garage. History of Glue The earliest known use of glue is on cave paintings from more than 5000 years ago, with adhesive substances added to paint to help it stick. Early glues were made from organic materials (often animal-based) containing collagen. Some of these animal glues were used by the ancient Romans to glue pottery, mosaics, and wood objectsmany of which are still intact thanks to glue. The first PVA-based glue was launched in 1947 and marketed as an all-purpose glue. In the 1950s, florist Aleene Jackson created a thick tacky white glue to use for her floral arrangements. Glue d'Aleene became so popular that she started bottling and selling it, eventually changing the name to Aleene's Original Tacky Glue. The recent slime trend has brought renewed attention to tacky glue, as its use is seen by millions of Instagram and YouTube users. Today there are more than 60 Aleene's adhesive options with more being developed. Aleene Jackson, Creator of Aleene's Glues in the 1950's. Her glue was first used for floral arrangements. What Glue is Made of Most modern glues are chemical based and manufactured with synthetic materials. White glue or school glue is more formally known as PVA glue. PVA stands for polyvinyl acetate glue and refers to the type of resin used in the glue. Glues are generally made from a combination of PVA, water, ethanol, acetone and other substances. Water is used to modify the glue's consistency; other ingredients control the rate at which the glue dries out. PVA glue is odorless and does not break down or yellow over time. PVA glue remains flexible when dry and does not affect the PH balance of papers, photos and other items it's used on. The exact formula for Aleene's Original Tacky Glue is proprietary information and therefore cannot be shared, but rest assured that it is nontoxic and safe for use the classroom as well as in the home. Make sure to check the label of any glue before using, as all products containing toxic materials are required to print a caution message on all labels. How Glue Is Made Glue is made by a process involving a chemical reaction of acetylene and acetic acid, creating the compound polymer polyvinyl acetate (PVA). This polymer is added to an emulsion (or mixture) to create glue; additional chemicals are added to preserve the glue and to prevent it from drying out in its bottle. Why Glue Is Sticky Adhesives like glue contain chains of proteins that bond with the molecules of the surface they are spread on, entering the tiny holes (pores) and spaces of the material. When glue dries over a surface, it hardens, causing the molecules to stick together. Aleene's uses a specially formulated resin in the Aleene's Original Tacky Glue formula that gives it a high initial tack (grabbing power) and bonding strength; its thick formula helps it grab and hold items on contact. Other glues tend to use more filler materials and less adhesive, causing the glues to be less effective. How Long Glue Lasts Glue has a long shelf life. All Aleene's glues, for instance, are treated with a biocide to prevent bacteria growth. If a glue bottle is capped tightly, the glue should last a long timeas much as 10 years or more. If it still flows smoothly out of the bottle tip without being clumpy or stringy, the glue should be fine to use. As to how long glue can hold, in ideal circumstances, glues keep things stuck together indefinitely. Best of all, Aleene's glues are formulated to dry clear and will not turn yellow over time. Aleene's glues are formulated to dry clear and won't turn yellow over time. Cleaning and Removing Glue Residue Glue residue can happen when using a spray adhesive and overspray sticks to the surface of the surrounding area, or if some of the glue presses out of the sections being glued together. If the glue is still wet, clean away with a damp, soapy cloth. If the glue has dried, you can try rubbing it away, carefully scraping it from the surface with a razor blade or using a glue remover product like Goo Gone. You can also try acetone (found in nail polish remover). All Aleene's Tacky Glues can be removed with an all-natural, biodegradable citrus-based cleaner. Glue Drying Times How long it takes for glue to dry depends on several factors, including the type of glue used, how much glue was used for the project and the level of humidity in the area. A general rule for white glues is to let the glue dry at least overnight for the bond to set. If there will be any weight bearing on the bond, allow the glue to dry for at least 48 hours. When the glue sets up, it does not always mean that it is completely dry, so best practice is to wait for the entire recommended dry time. Glue Safety PVA glue such as Aleene's Original Tacky Glues are nontoxic and safe for use. As with most substances, precautions should be taken to keep glue away from small children to avoid accidental ingestion. If swallowed, give two glasses of water to drink and consult a physician. The ancient Egyptians used glue to produce papyrus. The German inventor of the glue stick had been inspired by the twist-up feature of lipstick tubes. Glue doesn't stick to its bottle because the amount of air in the bottle is insufficient for the water in glue to evaporate and dry out the glue. When glue is used to stick two things together, the water in the glue evaporates, allowing the polymers to bond the glued items together. The glue on Israel's stamps is kosher. Some glues are used in hospitals to keep wounds closed in place of stitches. The inventor of Aleene's Tacky Glue, Aleene Jackson, hosted a show on PBS called Aleene's Creative Living.

Make sure your cardboard piece is large enough to cut your popsicle shape from, in the desired size you want for your piñata. Step 2 Draw an upside-down U shape on the cardboard and cut it out. Create a smaller version of this for the Popsicle handle. Step 3 Cut strips of poster board about 4 wide and long enough to fit around the outer edge of your cardboard Popsicle shape. Cut small strips of poster board at least 2 long these will help connect your larger poster board strips to the cardboard so they act as a frame. Add dots of Quick Dry Tacky Glue every few inches along the larger strips. Step 4 Press the smaller strips into the dots of glue, then fold them upward as shown. Step 5 Add a dot of Quick Dry Tacky to the top of each connector strip. Step 6 Add glue along the outer edge of the cardboard piece. Step 7 Glue poster board around the entire perimeter of the cardboard, then cut a door on one side of the poster board, where you can insert candy after the piñata is done. Step 8 Wrap the piñata in two sheets of white tissue paper like a present, and glue in place to secure. Step 9 Cut a slit in the tissue paper at the bottom of the popsicle and insert and glue the popsicle stick piece. Step 10 Cut long strips of red, white and blue tissue paper that are about 2 inches wide. Step 11 Cut fringe along one side of each long strip of tissue paper. Step 12 Glue the red, white and blue tissue paper strips around the entire piñata, fringe side down. Layer them slightly over one another as you go, so there aren't any gaps. Don't forget to leave an opening for the door on the side! Step 13 Once everything has dried, its time to stuff the piñata and tape the door shut to secure. If you're going to be hanging your piñata, glue or staple a strand of string to the backside. And now your popsicle piñata is ready to be a total hit at your party! Measure the outside of your frame to determine the length of fabric you need for your canopy. First measure the length of one of the rooftop angled pieces, then the length of one of the vertical pieces, and multiply by 2 (for both sides of the structure). Then add an additional 10 (5 for each side) for wrapping the fabric around the base and securing. For the width of the fabric, simply measure the depth of your frame, and add a few inches for creating hems. Iron your fabric and cut it to match the total of your measurements. Next, hem the fabric using Fabric Fusion Tape. Place your fabric wrong side up, and fold over each side along the length once, then again (about an inch) for clean edges. Unfold the sides once (so you still have a clean, folded outer edge) and run a line of Fabric Tape along the length and remove the top liner. Fold the edge of the fabric back over and press in place on top of the Fabric Tape to secure. Finally, fold the hem over the top of the frame base and press in place on the Fabric Tape to secure. How to Glue Wood to Glass - Simple Cactus Terarriums

How to Glue Wood to Glass - Simple Cactus Terrariums

I'm really getting into indoor container gardening but I have a few issues that's keeping me from getting at it full force... First of all I am fairly famous for my black thumb among friends and family. Secondly, my cat Marla eats any plant that comes into this house and many can be poisonous to kitty. I was pretty excited to realize that Marla keeps succulents and cactus alone so I can have them wherever I please in the house! I've only killed a few so far and my success ratio is pretty up there! To celebrate I bought a handful of cacti and set about making them an awesome terrarium to call home! What you need: Aleene's heavy-duty adhesive Square glass vases Ruler Balsa wood Wood stain X-acto knife & cutting mat Terrarium filler (rocks, moss, dirt, etc.) Cactus or succulent plants Forget clamps, tacks, bindings and other nonsense: using glue to attach glass to wood is easier and less likely to result in frustration, mishaps and mess ups! So whether you're a weekend woodworking warrior installing transparent doors on your display case or attempting to attach wood letter cut-outs toa mirror or pane of glass, you'll be best served using Aleene's Glass and Bead Adhesive. This industrial-strength glass glue works on slick, hard-to-hold surfaces, grabs items instantly, dries clear, and is water resistant. There are just a few easy steps to follow when securing wood to glass with this industrial-strength glue. Use sandpaper to smooth any uneven or raised spots on the wood where you will be attaching glass. Clean the surfaces to be bonded together. Use a damp cloth to remove any dust from the wood pieces. Use glass cleaner and paper towels to clean the glass pieces. Make sure all pieces are dry before gluing together. Apply a small amount of glue to the surface of the glass piece and another small amount to the surface of the wood piece. Press the piece of wood to the glass and hold for a few seconds. If necessary, remove any misplaced glue on the glass surface with a damp cloth, or carefully use a razor blade if the glue has already dried. Allow the glue to cure for 24 hours. First up you'll need to find square glass vases. I got mine at the craft store and I didn't pay attention to how flat the sides were which caused me some problems later on. Find vases where the sides aren't very curved in on the thinner parts of the glass. They're out there you just might have to dig through a few vases on the shelf to find them! I made my strips of wood the same height as my ruler to keep things simple but you can work with whatever pattern/size of wood you prefer. Measure out the width of your vase on ONE side. Cut your balsa wood so that you have 4 pieces the exact same length and width. These will be the upper and lower pieces of wood on that first side and the side opposing it. You'll need to cut the vertical pieces for this side, also. Place the bottom piece up against the glass and then place the top piece along the upper edge. Hold both with one hand. Measure the distance between the two pieces and then cut a piece to fit. It may not be perfect but it will be close enough. See how you can see a slight gap on my piece? In the end when you see the full vase from a distance you can't tell and they still look fab! Continue the steps to cut out the strips for your other sides and for any other terrariums you're making at the same time. Stain your wood pieces any color you choose and allow to dry a few hours. Once your wood strips are dry grab your Aleene's heavy-duty adhesive. Run a moderate amount of glue on the backside of the wood. I went with a line around the perimeter and a squiggle in the middle. Press your piece of wood to the glass and hold for a few seconds. I gave myself a count of 20 and that was a pretty good amount of time for the wood to begin to hold on its own. Frame your first side. And then frame the opposing side. Allow the glue to set for 20-30 minutes. When the first sides don't sleep around at a light touch you can continue to frame the remaining 2 sides of your vase/terrarium. Place somewhere safe to cure for at least 24 hours before continuing. Next we're going to layer filler to make the center, open glass of the terrarium look lovely. I used green and gray decorative rocks on the bottom to provide good drainage to prevent overwatering. Next I just had to use this purple moss I've had lying around for ages. With a layer of moss on top of my rocks I'm now ready to bring in the potting soil and my cactus plants. The soil will push down your moss into your rocks but that's just the way it works. No worries! If you're working with cacti I'd strongly recommend getting leather or suede gloves to protect yourself from the spines. Sometimes they get in and you can't seem to find them (they go invisible or something!) to get them out again. Ouch! To set my potting soil so that it doesn't easily spill out when my terrariums are moved around I topped them off with aquarium gravel pushed into the top layer. It looks pretty and helps me from making a mess regularly! And there are my finished terrariums! Now remember how I was saying you need to be careful that the sides of your vases are somewhat flush? I didn't pay attention to that so I have some gaps in my wood frames that could have been prevented. But set out on my bookshelf with one of my Rob's paintings and a Himmeli style copper tubing sculpture I made, these cactus terrariums look amazing even with a few small gaps. Another option for completeing your terrariums is to finish both sides of your wood strips. You can then place your plant inside of the glass vase rather than on top. The glass of my vases was wavy and made this not the greatest option but if I find another set of vases with clearer glass I'm going to give that a go!

Paint the smaller wood discs in a matching color for the bugs thorax (body). You can do a solid color or create fun designs on the thorax its completely up to you! Handmade Charlotte shows you how to use the Tack-It Method to create a glittery chore chart on plexiglass that doubles as a sparkling creative display. And by making your own changeable chore cards with Aleene’s Tack-It Over & Over, it’ll be a cinch to swap them out for different family members on different days! What you need: - Aleene’s Tack-It Over & Over - Plexiglass sheet in desired size - Large soft-bristled paintbrush - Holographic glitter in desired color - Vinyl alphabet stickers - Ruler - Masking tape/washi tape - Colored paper or cardstock - Laminating pouches - Scissors - Plastic tablecloth - Plastic cup or bowl - Stir stickStep 1 Before getting started on your DIY household chores list, protect your work surface with a plastic tablecloth for easy cleanup. In a plastic dish, mix 1 tablespoon of Tack-It Over & Over with 1 tablespoon of water and use a stir stick to thoroughly mix. Step 2 Place your plexiglass panel on your work surface and make sure its clean and free from dust and prints. Use a large soft-bristled brush to brush the Tack-It/water mixture over the entire panel. Need more? Mix up the extra amount that you need using a 1:1 ratio. Let it dry completely; it should feel tacky to the touch when dry. Step 3 Once the plexiglass is dry and has a nice tacky texture, sprinkle glitter over the tacky surface of your soon-to-be sparkling household chores list. Step 4 Use your hand to press and smooth the glitter onto the tacky surface of the plexiglass. You can save any remaining glitter for future use! Step 5 Once youve smoothed glitter over the tacky side, flip the plexiglass panel over so the slick surface is now on top. Its time to turn your glittered plexiglass into a proper household chores list! Step 6 Use a ruler and tape to help divide the panel into even sections one section per name. Apply your vinyl stickers onto the panel, spelling out each persons name. Step 7 To make the chore cards for your household chores list, print each chore onto colored paper and laminate. You can use non-heated laminating pouches or a heated laminator if you have one. Cut out each chore so it becomes its own card. Step 8: To tack the chore cards onto your household chores list, you can either make your own glue dots with Tack-It Over & Over and use them to tack up and change around the cards, or you can apply and smooth Tack-It Over & Over directly onto the backs of the laminated cards. Once dry, you can tack them up on the plexiglass panel and move them around each week! Step 9 And now you have a sparkly household chores list that shines with organization and responsibility or at least some color and creativity. The rest is up to your crew!
