Holiday Decoration Idea: Tie-Dye Tree Skirt Tassels
Make Your Own Tie-Dye Family Stockings
Published Date: November 12, 2024 Want Santa to fill your family stockings with lots of good stuff this year? Up your chances with custom tie-dye stockings that’ll catch his eye once he comes down the chimney! Mikyla Creates will show you how to use Tulip Fabric Dyes to make ombre-dyed family stockings with pretty pompoms to go with them. Get inspired to get colorfully creative with your holiday décor this year! Supplies needed - Tulip Fabric Dyes (Hot Water Dyes) – Bright Pink, Gray, Sunshine – or desired colors - White cotton chunky knit stockings - Yarn in desired colors for pompoms - Pompom makers in various sizes - Large bowl for mixing dye - Salt/measuring spoons - Mixing spoon - Scissors - Disposable plastic table cover Instructions Make sure stockings are 100% cotton For best results when dyeing your family stockings, make sure the stockings are made from 100% cotton or another natural-fiber fabric. Mix Fabric Dyes according to instructions Cover your work surface with a protective plastic table cover, then mix your Fabric Dyes (hot water dyes) in a large bowl according to the package instructions. Create custom colors by mixing and testing dyes Mikyla created her own custom peach-pink color by mixing and testing Bright Pink, Gray and Sunshine dyes. To do this, mix in a little bit of each dye powder at a time and test with a paper towel until you get the shade you want. You can also try mixing other colors, or using the shade that comes in your dye packet. Get creative with your family stockings and have fun! Dye the stockings To dye your family stockings, first dampen each stocking and wring out the excess water. You can either dip the stockings directly into the bowl of dye and let them soak in the dye for a bit, or you can spoon the dyes onto the stockings if you want more control over the dye placement. The damper the stocking, the more the dye will permeate and travel through the fabric fibers. For an ombre effect when spooning the dye, add more dye on the bottoms of the stockings and less as you work your way towards the tops. Pompom making supplies Cover the stockings with plastic to keep damp while the dye sets, then follow instructions for laundering and drying. While the dye is processing, you can make colorful pompoms to go with your family stockings! Mikyla used pompom makers of various sizes for hers. Wrap yarn around each side of pompom maker To make the pompoms, wrap yarn around each side of the pompom maker, as many times as you’d like. The more times you wrap the yarn, the fluffier the pompom will be! Cut yarn around perimeter Once each side is full, snap the pompom maker closed and cut the yarn around the perimeter of the device, making sure to cut all strands. Tie a string around pompom Tie a long string around the perimeter of the pompom maker, then remove the device and tighten the string as much as you can, then knot it to hold in place. Leave the long strands of string so you can use them to tie the pompoms to the stocking. Trim pompoms to even out Trim around the pompom to make sure the strings are even on all sides (leaving your long hanger strands). Continue this process to make pompoms of different colors and sizes for all of your family stockings. Attach pompoms to stockings Attach the pompoms to the stockings in clusters and trim excess string. Tie-Dye Family Stockings Once the pompoms are attached, it’s time to hang your tie-dye family stockings. Santa won’t be able to resist stuffing these stockings with lots of goodies! Christmas is about to get even more colorful! Supplies needed Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit in your favorite colors (This project features dye in Wine, Fuchsia, and Orange) Protective Gloves Rubber Bands White cotton fabric, cut large enough to wrap your present Wooden spoon Paper Christmas ornaments Instructions Prepare the dye solution. Before you get started on this project, wash the fabric without fabric softeners. Mix the Wine-colored dye solution in by adding water to the dye bottle up to the fill line. Replace the cap and shake for 1 minute or until the dye is completely dissolved. Pour the Fuchsia-colored dye powder and water into a bowl and stir with a wooden spoon. Dye entire fabric in a large bowl, wringing out the excess dye. Place the fabric into the bowl containing Fuchsia dye. Ensure that the fabric is entirely saturated with dye by moving it around with the spoon. Carefully wring out excess dye and transfer the fabric onto a protected work surface. Twist fabric into a spiral and secure with rubber bands. Pinch the fabric at its center and twist into a swirl. Keep twisting the fabric tightly until the entire piece is formed into a spiral shape. Secure with rubber bands. Apply darker dye onto both sides of the spiral, then wrap in plastic to set. Apply Wine-colored dye onto the spiral, then flip it over and apply dye to the back. Place your project into a plastic bag and let set for 6-8 hours. Once your dye has fully processed, remove the rubber bands and check out your spiral tie dye! Rinse, wash and dry according to the instruction guide. Place your present in the center of the fabric at a 45-degree angle Once you’re done tie dyeing, it’s time to get wrapping! To get started, lay the fabric flat and place your present in the center of the fabric at a 45-degree angle. Fold one corner of the wrap across the gift, then the other. Fold one corner of the wrap across the gift, then the other, tucking the excess underneath if necessary. Pull the other two corners together and tie into a double knot. Pull the remaining two corners of the wrap together and tie into a double knot and add a gift tag for an extra-personalized touch. Your furokishi-inspired wrap is now complete! This reusable fabric gift wrap is a great eco-friendly alternative to paper gift wrap. Try using a variety of techniques and dyes for a colorful Christmas! Dip paper ornaments into dye and allow to dry completely. Don’t ditch that extra dye—use it for custom dip-dyed ornaments! Transfer the remaining dye into small bowls, then dip paper ornaments into the dye. Allow them to dry completely on a wire or plastic rack so that excess dye doesn’t pool. That’s it! Your matching ornaments are now ready for the tree. What other tie-dye techniques will you try for the holiday season? Show us your colorful crafts on social @TulipColorCrafts!

DIY Tie Dye Matching Family Pajamas
Published Date: November 09, 2022 Stay colorfully cozy this Christmas in matching PJs for the whole family! Christmas morning will be extra merry & bright with tie-dye PJs you’ll end up wanting to wear all day. (No shame in that game.) Craft Box Girls put together this tutorial to get you inspired so you don’t have to wait for Santa to leave them under your tree … you can do it yourself with Tulip One-Step Tie Dye. So round up your crew and get everyone involved in a creative activity that just might become a new holiday family tradition! Supplies needed Tulip One-Step Tie Dye (any kit with red and green) - White 100% cotton pajamas - Disposable plastic surface cover - Sealable plastic bags Instructions Wash pajamas before starting Before starting on your tie-dye pajamas, make sure to wash them (without fabric softener). You can get straight to tie dyeing after they’re done washing, or if you’ll be tie dyeing at a later time, make sure to thoroughly dampen the pajamas under the faucet or in a bowl of water. Wring out excess water. Lay damp PJs on work surface Lay out your damp pajamas on a covered work surface, then choose your favorite tie-dye technique. There are so many good ones! If you’re making matching family pajamas like Craft Box Girls, choose which tie-dye patterns you all like best (you can mix & match different patterns for the legs and tops), or everyone can do their own thing! Pleat and bind project Fold, pleat or bind your project using the rubber bands included in your kit. For the pajama pants, Craft Box Girls opted for a stripes tie-dye pattern. You can do the same or choose something different! Add dyes to project Mix up your dyes with water according to instructions, then apply in between the rubber bands on your project. Tip: leave a little bit of white space on each side of each rubber band. This will help create more defined patterns and also prevent the dye colors from blending too much and looking “muddy.” (Since red and green can look brown when mixed.) Bind top for bullseye pattern For the pajama tops, Craft Box Girls chose the bullseye tie-dye pattern. It’s so easy and looks so cool! Simply decide where you want the bullseye center to be, then pinch the fabric at this point and pull upward into a tube shape. Wrap rubber bands around the fabric every few inches to your liking. Alternate dyes between rubber bands Alternate red and green dye colors between each banded section as done with the pants. (Or experiment with other color patterns!) Let set, then cut off rubber bands When everyone is done with their tie dye, place each project in a sealable plastic bag to keep damp, then let the dye set for 6 to 8 hours or longer. After the dye has set, remove the projects from the bags and cut off the rubber bands. Rinse and wash pajamas Thoroughly rinse each pajama set under running water, then wash and dry according to instructions. If your pajamas are all the same colors, you can wash them together, otherwise, wash separately to prevent the colors from muddying in the washer. Tie-Dye Christmas Pajamas Now you’re ready to wake up on Christmas morning in vibrant tie-dye style! It’s such a fun way to add an extra festive feel to your holiday. Stunning Shibori Tie-Dye Furniture Flip with Tulip
Published Date: February 09, 2022 Who doesn’t love a gorgeous Shibori tie dye? Those deep blue hues are to dye for! This tutorial from Craft Box Girls will teach you how to add some style to furniture that needs a new look with the Tulip One-Step Shibori Tie-Dye Kit! Instructions Prepare dyes according to package instructions. Before you get started, prewash (and dry, if using the dry technique) the fabric that you will be dyeing. Prepare the dyes according to package instructions. Prepare fabric into the pole wrapping technique This project uses the pole wrapping technique, but you can use whichever folding technique you’d like! For the pole wrapping technique, wrap your fabric around your pole or cardboard tube, then use string to wrap around the fabric. Scrunch the fabric down and tighten the string as you wrap. Continue until all of the fabric is wrapped with string and scrunched together. Apply the dye solution to your fabric Place your fabric onto your sheet pan and wire rack. This will be helpful for catching excess dye! Apply dyes onto your fabric and allow them to fully soak into the fabric. Wrap with plastic and allow dye to set Once you’re satisfied with your dye coverage, cover your fabric with plastic wrap to keep it damp. Allow dye to set for 6-8 hours or longer for more saturated color. Once set, remove plastic wrap and string and wash and dry according to kit instructions. Re-cover your furniture with dyed fabric Now it’s time to re-cover your furniture with your dyed fabric! It is important that you re-cover your piece of furniture in the same way that it was originally put together. For instance, the stool in this project was put together with one seam along the top outer edge, and then one seam along the backside vertically with it stapled underneath the stool. Wrap and glue fabric onto top of stool. Begin with the top portion – cut fabric in a circle around the top and then slowly begin to glue around the top edge (near the original seam) and tightly pull into place working your way around the top. Trim excess fabric as needed. Wrap fabric along the long edge of your furniture. Either iron a straight edge or stitch a straight seam to the long edge of your tie-dyed material. Then with a bead of hot glue, carefully glue this top edge of material to the stool, overlapping the top circle that is already glued into place. Once you reach the starting point, fold over both edges and glue them into place. Wrap fabric to the underside and glue Wrap your fabric to the underside of the stool and glue into place. Pull the fabric taut as you tack down and allow to dry completely. Display your furniture Now your fresh new furniture is ready! Get ready to display your stunning Shibori furniture! What other Shibori tie-dye projects will you try? Show us how creative you can get and tag us on social @TulipColorCrafts!

Glow in the Dark Halloween Ghost Costume
Published Date: October 11, 2021 Are you looking for a simple yet stunning costume for your kids this Halloween? Look no further! Ghosts are a spooky staple for the season, of course, but surely the classic white bedsheet could use an upgrade. Oh Yay Studio will show us how to create a frightfully fun glowing ghost costume using the Tulip Glow in the Dark Tie-Dye Kit! Supplies needed - Tulip One-Step Glow in the Dark Tie-Dye Kit - 100% cotton flat kid’s bedsheet - Scissors Instructions Prewash and dry your sheet, then choose your folding technique Before you get started, prewash and dry your bedsheet. Then choose your technique for folding and binding your project. In this example, Oh Yay Studio uses the accordion tie-dye technique. Prepare the tie-dye solutions Prepare the tie-dye solutions according to the package instructions. Add water to each bottle at the indicated “Water Fill” line. Reattach the nozzle with cap on and shake vigorously for a minimum of 1 minute. Remove the nozzle again and add the Glow Mixer to the indicated “Mixer Fill” line. Reattach the nozzle and cap and shake the solution for a minimum of 1 minute. Apply the dye solution to each section of the bedsheet. Apply your desired color of Glow Tie-Dye solution to each section, getting into all of the folds and crevices. Be sure to wear gloves during this step! To help the fabric absorb the dyes, work the solution into the fabric using your hands as you apply it. While applying they dye solution, shake regularly to ensure an even distribution of glow pigment in the dye. For best results, dye should be applied to a dry project. Allow the sheet to air dry for 24 hours, then machine wash and dry. When you’re finished applying the dye, remove the rubber bands and unfold your sheet. Lay the garment horizontally on the lined workspace to air dry for at least 24 hours to allow the dye to set. Flip the garment over halfway through the drying process to ensure that all layers dry thoroughly. Once it has thoroughly dried, machine wash your garment with cold water and a mild detergent on the “delicate” setting and allow to air dry. Measure and cut out eye holes Have your child try on the sheet, and measure approximately where their eyes are lined up on the fabric. It helps to mark the fabric so that you know exactly where to cut. Finally, cut out the two eye holes and your ghoulishly glowing ghost costume is ready! To charge the glow pigments, place the garment outside in the sunlight for 30-60 seconds or use a flashlight to recharge at night as needed. What other creative costumes will you make with Tulip Tie Dye for this spooky season? Share your ideas with us on social @TulipColorCrafts!

Matching Hearts Tie Dye Backpack and Pencil Case
Published Date: August 05, 2021 Back to school means back to cool style for the year ahead! Before you hit the books, Oh Yay Studio will give you some A+ ideas for upgrading your backpack and pencil case with total tie-dye love from the Tulip Hearts One-Step Tie-Dye Kit. Supplies needed - Tulip Hearts One-Step Tie-Dye Kit - 100% canvas backpack and pencil pouches – white - Aleene’s Clear Gel Tacky Glue - Wire rack - Plastic tub to set rack on - Iron - Plastic wrap or large plastic bags - Protective plastic surface cover Instructions Wash, dry and iron backpack and pencil case Draw hearts on backpack Use the washable marker that comes in your Hearts Tie-Dye Kit to draw hearts all over the backpack. You can use a ruler to help you plot out even spacing, or just wing it! Fill in hearts with glue After you’ve drawn the hearts, begin filling them in with glue to create the tie-dye resist. Apply the glue generously so it completely covers the heart, but not so much that it seeps outside of the lines. Tip: Practice first on scratch paper or scrap fabric to get the hang of it! Repeat on pencil case Repeat on the pencil case if you want to create the same pattern as the backpack. Then let the glue dry COMPLETELY before tie dyeing. Draw a half heart shape along the fold Another option you can use for the pencil case is the traditional heart tie-dye technique. Fold the case in half and use the washable marker to draw a half heart shape along the fold of the case. Pleat and secure case along the marker line Next pleat the case along the marker line, doing your best to stay with the line so it appears straight over the tops of the pleats. Secure it with a rubber band at the marker line. Continue wrapping another rubber band or two around the case after the first rubber band. Scrunch and secure backpack Once the glue has completely dried, now it’s time to begin scrunching the backpack and securing with rubber bands. Make sure the zipper is closed, and do your best to scrunch up and secure the straps too. Tip: Leave some heart areas un-scrunched because you want the glue resist to do its job so you can really see the heart shapes after the bag has been tie dyed. Dampen projects and place on rack Repeat with the pencil case, then dampen each project and place on a wire rack over a bin. (The bin will catch the dye runoff so your projects don’t sit in pools of dye, making the colors muddy.) Add water to mix dyes Add water to the dye bottles and shake to mix. You can use all colors in your kit or just a few, depending on how much color variation you want on your projects! Apply dyes to all sides of projects Finally! It’s time to tie dye! Apply the dyes however you like on the backpack and case(s). Make sure to rotate each as you are applying the dyes so you cover all sides and angles. Let set for 6 to 8 hours After you’ve covered each project in tie dye, wrap in plastic or place each in a plastic bag to keep them damp while the dye processes for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for brightest results. Cut rubber bands off after dye has set After the tie dye has set, cut off the rubber bands from each project. Rinse projects under running water Rinse each thoroughly under running water to remove excess dye. Soak in warm water to remove glue For the projects using glue resist, fill your sink or a bin with very warm water, using enough water to be able to submerge the bag/pencil case entirely. Allow to soak at least 30 minutes for the glue to soften, then use your fingers to help rub away the glue. Repeat soaking and working the glue off of the fabric until all has been removed. Then hang the bag to dry! Tie-Dye Backpack and Pencil Cases Now you’re ready to tote those books and binders in a vibrant heart tie-dye backpack you’ll love all year long! Published Date: July 01, 2021 Brush your way to bold & bright tie-dye looks with ombre tie-dye techniques LuLuMake will help get you inspired with these easy ideas – no twisting, folding or binding required! Supplies needed - Tulip® One-Step Tie-Dye Kit of Choice - 100% natural fiber T-shirts - Bowl for water - Paintbrush -Disposable plastic table cover -Plastic wrap Instructions Add water to dye bottles to mix To mix your One-Step Dyes, add regular tap water to each bottle up to the line, replace the cap and shake until thoroughly mixed. You can choose any colors you like for these ombre tie-dye techniques, and use as many as you’d like to for your shirts. Dampen shirt and lay flat Prewash your T-shirts without fabric softener and leave damp. (Or you can always dampen right before you start your tie-dye techniques.) Cover your work surface with a plastic table cover and lay your damp shirt out flat on your work surface. Place a bowl of clean water at your work station. (You’ll use this for dampening your brush to blend the dyes.) Brush and blend dye Start by applying your first color onto the damp shirt, where ever you like. Dampen the paintbrush in the bowl of water, and begin brushing the dye and blending it above and below the dye section. Continue dampening your brush and brushing the dye, applying more dye to the shirt if needed. Add and blend next color Apply the next dye color onto your shirt where desired and repeat the brushing and blending process. For this ombre tie-dye technique, LuLuMake left white space between her dye sections, but you can also blend the colors into one another for different effects. Brush and blend dye on the sleeves Don’t forget the sleeves! Brush and blend dyes onto the sleeves in any pattern you like. Once you’re happy with your ombre tie dye, cover the shirt (leaving it flat) with plastic to keep it damp, and allow the dye to process 6 to 8 hours or longer for best results. Diagonal ombre tie-dye technique Another ombre tie-dye technique LuLuMake tried is diagonal stripes; simply apply straight from the dye bottles and brush and blend the dyes in between the stripes. You can keep your color sections separate, or try alternating your dye colors for another option. Diagonal Ombre Stripes T-shirt Once your tie dye has completely set, rinse and wash your shirts according to instructions. Then it’s time to take your ombre tie dye out for some fun! Tie Dye Matching Sweatsuits and Masks for the Whole Fam
Published Date: October 19, 2020 Remember when the weather was cooler and we were all wearing tie-dye sweatsuits? We’re all still planning on wearing them again when fall hits, right? We’ll even take a cold breeze or some extra air conditioning so we can get out our cute & cozy sweatsuits right now. But this time we’re taking our tie-dye sweatsuits to the next level with matching tie-dye face masks and gear for the whole fam – yes, even our furry family members. Get inspired to step into fall in serious tie-dye style with this easy tutorial from Mikyla Creates! Supplies needed - Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit of choice (Mermaid Kit featured in this post) - White 100% cotton sweatsuit - White 100% cotton Face Masks - White 100% cotton T-shirt - White 100% cotton scarf or bandana for pets - Disposable plastic surface cover - Sealable plastic bag - Paper towels - Extra bowl (optional) - Measuring spoons (optional) Instructions Prewash clothing and add water to dye bottles As always when working with tie dye, cover your work surface with a protective plastic cover and prewash your sweatsuit and other items to tie dye – without fabric softener. If you’re going to be tie dyeing right away, you can leave them damp straight from the washing machine. Then add water to your dye bottles and mix according to the instructions. Mix dyes to create custom colors Tie dye is already super fun, but what makes One-Step Dyes even better is you can mix them to create your own custom colors! Mikyla decided to mix 1/8 teaspoon of Turquoise dye powder with 1/8 teaspoon of Aegean Sea for her tie dye. You can do this in a bowl then add water, or you can also premix your dyes with water, then combine them that way. Then test your dyes on a paper towel to see how they’ll look on your fabrics, and add more of a color if desired. Fold and bind projects Fold and bind your projects using any of your favorite tie-dye techniques! Mikyla went with the crumple tie-dye pattern for hers, but you can seriously use any technique for tie dyeing your sweatsuit. Repeat with your face mask, pet bandana and any other project you’re tie dyeing. Add dyes to projects Now it’s time to tie dye your projects! Add which ever color dyes you like, and make sure to rotate the fabrics as you add dye so you get all sides. If you have a lot of crumples or folds, work the tips of the dye bottle(s) into the folds as you squeeze the dye onto your projects. This helps the dye better saturate the fabrics. Let dye set, then rinse and wash Once you’ve added your dyes to your sweatsuit, masks and other items, cover with plastic or place in a sealable plastic bag to keep damp while the dye processes. You’ll want to leave them in plastic for 6 to 8 hours or longer for the dye to fully set. Then rinse and launder according to your kit instructions. Tie-dye pet scarf Now it’s time for everyone in the fam to show off their matching tie dye! Even your furry family members will love sporting their very own tie-dye look. PS. How PAWSITIVELY adorable is Mikyla’s dog?! Matching tie-dye family outfits You can count us IN for family photos in totally fantastic tie-dye looks! The holidays will be here before we know it – get prepped now! Matching tie-dye outfits and masks Don’t forget your masks! You’ll be the cutest crew out and about with your matching tie-dye outfits and masks!
How to Use Soda Ash for Tie Dye
Published Date: September 21, 2020 If you’ve heard of tie dye, you’ve probably heard of soda ash too. If not, then we’re sure you’re now thinking, what is soda ash? And what does it have to do with tie dye? Soda ash is also known as sodium carbonate, but the most important thing you need to know about it is that soda ash can help prepare the fibers of your fabric to better absorb dyes and therefore produce brighter results. It’s often used as a presoak treatment before tie dyeing, but it’s not necessary when using Tulip One-Step Dyes because they already have soda ash mixed into the dyes. However, you can absolutely still use it! In this tutorial, Mikyla Creates shows you how to use soda ash for tie dye. Supplies needed - Tulip Soda Ash - Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit of choice - White 100% cotton hoodie or item to tie dye - Bowl - Measuring cups - Stir spoon - Disposable plastic surface cover - Sealable plastic bag Instructions Add warm water to mixing bowl Prepare 8 cups of warm water and add to a mixing bowl. Make sure the bowl is large enough to fit the item you are going to tie dye. Add soda ash and stir Add half of a 2-lb. bag of soda ash to the warm water and stir until thoroughly mixed. Submerge fabric in soda ash Completely submerge your hoodie (or item you are tie dyeing) in the soda ash solution and allow it to soak for 30 minutes to an hour. Fold and bind fabric After your fabric is done soaking, remove it from the solution and wring it out, but do not rinse it. Place it on your covered work surface and fold and bind it using whatever tie-dye technique you like! Apply dyes and let set Mix your One-Step Dyes according to instructions, then apply to your soda ash pretreated fabric as normal. Once you have applied your dyes, cover your project with plastic or seal in a sealable plastic bag and let set for 6 to 8 hours or longer. Then rinse and launder according to instructions. Soda ash tie-dye hoodie And that’s how to use soda ash for tie dye! Wasn’t that easy? Didn’t Mikyla’s hoodie turn out so bright and fun?! How to Throw a Tie-Dye Party in Your Backyard
Published Date: August 17, 2020 We’re all staying close to home these days, but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate special occasions or enjoy fun activities outdoors with close friends and family. We’re feeling super inspired by this amazingly bright backyard tie-dye party our friends over at Beijos Events threw for their kids, and we just have to share. So, if you’ve been searching for fun party ideas you can do outdoors, or you’ve been obsessing over tie dye lately (we can’t think of anything better to obsess over) and are wondering how to throw a tie-dye party, get the deets here. Are you ready for the best backyard party ever?! Supplies needed - Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kits of choice - White 100% cotton T-shirts - Colorful plastic table covers - Sealable plastic bags + permanent marker for labeling - Paper towels - Colorful decorations like balloons, flowers, etc. - Colorful napkins, paper plates and plastic utensils – choose lots of different colors - Colorful snacks of course! Instructions Tie-dye party invitations Are you ready to learn how to throw a tie-dye party that’ll make you the coolest parent/friend/neighbor ever?! First things first: invitations. There are a ton of options online to affordably create party invitations – get creative and add lots of color. It IS a tie-dye party after all! Tie-dye party table setting Now that you have the invites out, let’s set the stage. To throw a tie-dye party, you’ll want to decorate your backyard with lots of COLOR. Don’t be afraid to go full rainbow with it, mixing in lots of different colors with your party decorations. This doesn’t have to be expensive either. You can create a balloon arch as a backdrop (which also serves as a great photo spot for guests), and even use a wild mix of bright flowers as your table centerpieces. Colorful place settings for a backyard tie-dye party Paper plates and cups make cleanup at the end of the party extra easy; you can toss ‘em and move on! And luckily, finding them in a bunch of different colors is also easy and affordable. Have fun mixing & matching a variety of different-colored paper plates and cups into your place settings. And if you’re feeling extra fancy, you can even create cute little name cards for each guest like the Beijos crew. Prep dye bottles before the party starts Now it’s time for the tie dye! Cover all work areas with disposable plastic tablecloths to protect your surfaces while working with the dyes. Make sure to have paper towels handy, as well as sealable plastic bags the kids can store their tie-dye projects in while the dye processes. (Plus, it’s a great way to keep messes contained so they’re not setting their wet dye projects on other surfaces!) To speed things up, you can prep your dye bottles before the party starts, just keep in mind that you’ll want to do it less than 24 hours before the party. Dyes can lose their concentration after 24 hours, so we recommend waiting until just before the party starts. Dampen shirts and bind for desired tie-dye technique When it’s time to tie dye, have the kids (or hey, grownups too – tie dye is for everyone!) dampen their shirts in a bucket of water or under the faucet and wring out. Have them choose the tie-dye technique they want to try from the instruction guides included in your Tulip Tie-Dye Kits. Or you can find even more ideas on our tie-dye techniques page. Put on plastic gloves before dyeing projects Once the T-shirts are scrunched, folded and held secure with rubber bands, it’s time to add the tie dye! Each tie-dye kit comes with protective plastic gloves, so have everyone put on their gloves before working with the dyes. Add dye to projects – experiment and have fun Depending on the tie-dye technique, everyone can choose from one to as many dye colors as they like. They can follow the instruction guide or completely do their own thing. There’s no wrong way to tie dye! The most important thing about a tie-dye party is the experience of having fun being creative. Once everyone has tie dyed their T-shirt, place each shirt in a separate sealable bag and write the person’s name on their bag so they can take it home with them at the end of the tie-dye party. Backyard tie-dye party The fun doesn’t end after the tie dye though! It’s time to toast to a totally awesome backyard party, don’t you think?! Serve colorful treats at your backyard tie-dye party And let’s not forget about the snacks … you’ll want colorful treats to serve everyone to go along with your tie-dye theme. Popsicles offer so many colors and flavor options, and are a refreshing way to stay cool during time outdoors! Cupcakes, cookies and fruits are also great colorful treat options. Use balloons as a colorful tie-dye party photo backdrop You can’t have a tie-dye party without photos! A mix of colorful balloons makes the perfect backdrop for tie-dye party photos. How to throw a tie-dye party in your backyard Now that you know how to throw a tie-dye party in your backyard that everyone will remember, make the most of the warm days we’re still having. Grab your favorite tie-dye kits and your favorite people, and have some outrageously colorful fun!

Bind shirts using bullseye tie-dye technique Annie and her daughters chose to try the bullseye tie-dye technique for their shirts for a more traditional tie-dye pattern, but you can try any of our tie-dye techniques for results that look pro status! After you have your project bound with rubber bands for the tie-dye pattern of your choice, it’s time to add water to your dye bottles and start tie dyeing. Once all dye is added, place in a plastic bag to set For the bullseye tie-dye technique, you can use as many or as few colors as you like! Try applying a different color to each banded section, or alternating colors between sections like Annie and her daughters. Once you’ve added all of your dye colors, place in a sealable plastic bag to keep damp for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for the dye to set. Once the dye has set, rinse and wash your tie-dye T-shirts according to instructions.
