Shibori Tie-Dye Technique
More intricate and detailed than modern tie dye, Shibori is a Japanese technique that uses string and other folding methods. Steps Step 1 Lay your damp shirt out flat on your work surface. Accordion fold the fabric from the bottom edge up to the top of the shirt in even folds. Starting on one end of the folded shirt, accordion fold it again in the other direction until you reach the other end. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the folded fabric in each direction, crisscrossing the rubber bands. This will hold your folded fabric securely in place. Step 2 Wearing the plastic gloves from your kit, place your project on a wire rack if using. Shibori traditionally uses indigo-colored dye, so mix up your indigo/dark blue dye and apply it to all of the exposed areas of fabric on each side. Step 3 Place your dyed project into a sealable plastic bag or wrap in plastic wrap to keep it damp while the dye completely processes. This will take 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want to give it some extra time. Step 4: Once your dye has fully processed, carefully cut away the rubber bands and check out your shibori tie dye! Rinse, wash and dry according to your instruction guide.
Crumple Tie-Dye Technique
No twisting, folding or pleating needed for this super easy tie-dye technique; just straight up scrunching! Steps Step 1: Cover your work area with a disposable plastic surface cover and you're ready to get started on the crumple tie-dye technique! Step 2: Lay your damp all-natural fabric out on the covered work surface. Scrunch the fabric into a crumpled mound. You can make the fabric loosely crumpled or really squish it all together for tighter, more defined crumples. Step 3: If you want to, you can secure your crumpled fabric with rubber bands before tie dyeing. But you don't have to. This will help hold those crumples together more tightly if you are trying to achieve a super defined crumple tie-dye pattern. Step 4: Mix your Tulip One-Step Dyes according to the packaging instructions, then apply to your cumpled fabric. You can apply one dye color or multiple dye colors - there's no wrong way to do it! Tip: If you are applying several dye colors, it's okay to allow the dyes to mix on the damp fabric, just make sure they're colors that blend nicely together (example: red + blue = purple). Some colors will turn a brownish color if they mix, so if you're unsure, try blending them together on scrap fabric first. Don't forget to flip your scrunched fabric over and apply dye to the backside as well. Place it in a sealed bag or cover with plastic to keep damp while the dye sets, then launder according to instructions. Kaleidoscope Ice Tie-Dye Technique
Remember the fun colors and shapes from your childhood kaleidoscope? Now create them on a shirt using powdered dye and ice! Steps Step 1: Fold damp shirt in half lengthwise and press flat on tabletop. Step 2: Pinch shirt where you would like the center of your first spiral to be, then twist fabric a few times to create a small spiral. Step 3: Maintaining first spiral, pinch another section of shirt and twist several times to create a second spiral. Step 4: Crumple the remaining fabric towards the spirals. Step 5: Bind the shirt with rubber bands to hold secure. Step 6: Make a paper ring to fit around bound shirt. This will help keep the ice in place when dyeing. Step 7: Place ice on top of bound shirt. Step 8: Instead of adding water to dye bottles to mix, squeeze dye powder of a few colors on top of ice. Step 9: Let ice melt and remove paper ring. Step 10: Flip shirt over and repeat process on the backside with additional dye powders. Step 11: Once the backside has been dyed, cut off the rubber bands, then launder according to instructions.
