Sunburst Tie-Dye Technique
Yin Yang Tie-Dye Technique
Get ready to bring a touch of Zen to your tie-dye creations with Tulip! Learn how to use your favorite Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit to create the iconic yin and yang symbol with a colorful twist! Inspired by the ancient symbol representing the interconnectedness of opposites, this yin yang tie-dye technique allows you to infuse your tie-dye designs with a sense of balance and unity. Steps Step 1: Gather supplies Gather your supplies for your Yin Yang tie-dye project. Step 2: Prepare your project Before you get started on your yin yang tie-dye project, prewash the substrate that you’ll be dyeing and lay the damp fabric flat on a protected work surface. Prepare your tie-dye solutions by adding water to the dye bottles, filling to the neck. Replace the cap tightly and shake well until dye powder is fully dissolved. Step 3: Trace circles Use a plastic cup and washable marker to trace a pair of circles for your yin yang tie-dye tee. The circles within the yin yang symbol represent the presence of the opposite aspect within each of the primary forces. Step 4: Draw division line Use washable marker to draw the division line between the circles. The curved line that separates the dark and light halves of the yin yang symbol represents the dynamic interplay between yin and yang. Step 5: Bind circles Pinch the center of each circle and upwards to the edge of the marked area. Secure the circles with rubber bands. Step 6: Pleat along line Tightly pleat your shirt along the marker line so that the line appears as straight as possible when all the pleats are together. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the pleated fabric at this marker line. Step 7: Apply dyes It’s time to add color to your yin yang tie-dye tee! Apply a dark-colored dye to one half of the fabric and a light-colored dye to the other. Apply opposite dyes to the inner circles. The presence of the opposite color within each half of the yin yang symbol illustrates the idea that within darkness, there is always a spark of light, and within light, there is always a hint of darkness. Step 8: Wrap & let set Once you’ve finished applying dyes to your yin yang tie-dye tee, cover with plastic wrap or place your project into a sealable plastic bag. Allow the dyes to set for 6-8 hours or overnight for more vibrant results. Step 9: Wash, dry & reveal! After the dye processes, rinse and launder according to package instructions. Your unique yin yang tie-dye outfit is ready to wear! What harmonious creations will you customize with the yin yang tie-dye technique? Mandala Tie-Dye Technique
Learn two ways to do this super fun technique! Steps What You Need Your Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit always comes with the basic tie-dye essentials you’ll need for your tie-dye project. Each kit includes a certain number of disposable plastic gloves, rubber bands, instructions, and of course – bottles of dye powder! Depending on the tie-dye technique you are using, you might need a few extra supplies. For the Full Mandala Tie-Dye Technique, we recommend having a washable marker, some wax string to help you achieve a super tight bind after folding, and some scissors for later removing the string. You’ll also need something to tie dye, like a T-shirt (or tapestry, bedding, etc. – whatever you wish to tie dye); make sure your fabric is made of a 100% natural fiber fabric like cotton, rayon or silk for best results. Mix Dyes & Prewash Fabric To mix your dyes, simply add tap water to the fill line on each bottle, replace the nozzles with the caps still on, and shake each bottle thoroughly until all dye powder dissolves. Wait to mix your dyes until you are ready to apply them. Dyes left unapplied for more than 72 hours might lose their concentration and therefore might not appear as vibrant after dyeing. There’s no need to presoak your fabric in soda ash before tie dyeing; Tulip dyes come with soda ash in the formula! However, we do recommend that you prewash your fabric (without fabric softener – this can block the dyes from properly absorbing into the fabric), especially if your fabric is brand new. Full Mandala Step 1: Pull up the top layer of your damp T-shirt from the middle of the collar and the same point on the bottom edge and fold the shirt in half vertically. Determine where the bottom of the sleeve is and fold the shirt in half again at this point, folding the bottom edge up towards the collar. Make sure your fabric layers are smooth, then fold the top layer of your folded shirt over into a triangle shape. Do this by grabbing the bottom edge of your shirt (which is now at the bottom left corner on your left-hand side), and folding it over to the top right-hand side corner as shown. This should form a triangle shape with your top layer. Repeat this same fold once more with the top layer to make a narrower triangle. Carefully flip the shirt over, keeping your triangle folds intact (which should now be on the bottom), and repeat this triangle folding process on the other half of the shirt. You should be folding the bottom layer back towards your left-hand side in the opposite direction. Lift your folded fabric slightly to determine where the edge of the sleeve is within the folds. This will be the point you start at when creating your zigzag guidelines for binding the fabric. Using a washable marker, start at the bottom edge of the folded fabric closest to you, at the point where the sleeve is noted in the step above. Draw a zigzag line from this point up to the other edge pointed away from you, and back down to the bottom fold, repeating until you reach the narrow tip of the folded fabric. Flip the folded fabric over and repeat drawing zigzags on the other side that match with/align with the lines you drew on the opposite side. Now it’s time to bind your fabric with your wax string! Wrap the string around your largest zigzag line (should be the point opposite the tip of the fabric) and tie a tight knot in the string. You’ll want to make it as tight as possible so you’ll have a very defined mandala pattern line after dyeing. Continue tightly wrapping the string a few times around each line of the zigzag until you reach the point. Tie a tight knot and cut off the remaining string. Step 2: It’s not a necessity, but we like to place our projects on a wire rack (like a baking rack) before applying dyes to help prevent the different dye colors from pooling underneath and potentially muddying the colors. Apply your dye colors to your project in whatever color patterns you like! You can apply a different color to each bound section if you want, or alternate colors between each section. Get creative and have fun! Make sure to rotate your project as you apply your dyes to match colors on the other side. Step 3: Once you’ve added all of your tie-dye colors, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for the dye to completely set. Step 4: After the dye colors have completely set, remove the string by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions. Half Mandala Step 1: Fold your prewashed, damp shirt in half lengthwise with the fold facing away from you. Starting at the bottom edge of shirt, triangle fold the bottom corner by pulling the corner back (away from you) until it aligns with the folded edge. Fold this triangle fold over again towards the folded edge to create a narrower triangular section, and a third time as well. Make sure the sleeve and the fabric is smooth and aligned with the folds. Carefully flip the shirt over, keeping the folded side intact as you place it on your work surface. Repeat creating the three triangle folds on the now top half, folding the fabric towards you (and the folded edge) this time around so the folds on each half of the shirt are mirrored. Use your washable marker to draw a zigzag line starting from the narrow point of the folded fabric to the halfway point. Tightly wrap rubber bands around each zigzag line, starting at the point and working your way towards the middle. Step 2: Add water to each tie-dye bottle you’re going to use for your project. Place your bound fabric on a wire rack if you have one, to help prevent the dyes from pooling underneath and muddying colors as you apply them to the fabric. Apply your dyes in whatever color patterns you choose. Don’t forget to turn the fabric over and apply dyes to the back side, matching whatever pattern you applied on the opposite side. Step 3: Once you’ve added all of your tie-dye colors, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap to help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight for the dye to completely set. Step 4: After the dye colors have completely set, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions. Shibori Tie-Dye Technique
More intricate and detailed than modern tie dye, Shibori is a Japanese technique that uses string and other folding methods. Steps Step 1 Lay your damp shirt out flat on your work surface. Accordion fold the fabric from the bottom edge up to the top of the shirt in even folds. Starting on one end of the folded shirt, accordion fold it again in the other direction until you reach the other end. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the folded fabric in each direction, crisscrossing the rubber bands. This will hold your folded fabric securely in place. Step 2 Wearing the plastic gloves from your kit, place your project on a wire rack if using. Shibori traditionally uses indigo-colored dye, so mix up your indigo/dark blue dye and apply it to all of the exposed areas of fabric on each side. Step 3 Place your dyed project into a sealable plastic bag or wrap in plastic wrap to keep it damp while the dye completely processes. This will take 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want to give it some extra time. Step 4: Once your dye has fully processed, carefully cut away the rubber bands and check out your shibori tie dye! Rinse, wash and dry according to your instruction guide.

How to Bleach Tie-Dye
Looking for a fun and different way to tie dye? Then you’ll love the bleach tie-dye technique! It's a unique way to create bold looks. And, it’s easier than you might think! Bleach tie-dye is a unique way to create bold looks with your favorite tie-dye patterns How to Bleach Tie Dye a Shirt Follow these easy instructions on how to bleach tie-dye a shirt. You will learn everything you need to know about tie dyeing your own shirts, sweats, and more to create bleach tie-dye effects. Steps What is Bleach tie dye? Traditional tie dye is done by adding dye to light-colored fabrics, and bleach tie dye does the opposite— instead of adding color, you’re removing it from your dark-colored fabrics with bleach! Bind your project in your desired tie-dye pattern, apply bleach, and voila! You’ve got a bold new look to hit the town with. Bleach dyeing might seem intimidating, but with the proper safety precautions and Tulip’s expert guidance, you’ll fall in love with this relatively simple tie-dye technique! Using household bleach to tie dye is just as easy as regular tie dye, but with faster and more dramatic results. Plus, since bleach removes color from fabrics fairly quickly, there’s no need to wait hours for dyes to set! You’ll be able to wear your bleach tie-dye projects the same day you make them— it's that quick! Bleach tie-dye supplies Here is what you'll need for this bleach tie-dye tutorial: Dark colored shirt, 100% cotton Tulip Reverse Tie-Dye Kit (Or Hydrogen peroxide + Bleach) Water Gloves (included in kit) Rubber bands (included in kit) Squeeze bottle (included in kit) Plastic tablecloth Wire rack (optional) Face Mask and Safety goggles (optional) Step 1: Prep Your Station Prep your dye station: The most important aspect of bleach tie-dye is following proper safety precautions. Bleach can be a very harmful chemical, so you’ll want to protect yourself and your work area as much as possible! Set up your bleach tie-dye station in a well-ventilated area and wear face mask that covers your mouth and nose to avoid inhaling toxic fumes. Protect your work surface with a plastic covering, like a disposable plastic tablecloth or large garbage bags, to prevent staining. Remember to always wear gloves when handling bleach! We also recommend wearing safety goggles while bleaching— it’s better to be safe than sorry! Step 2: Mix Solutions Mix your solutions: Mix up one of the bottles of Color Changer from your Reverse Tie-Dye Kit according to instructions. It's the easiest solution. This is what you’ll use to bleach tie dye your shirt! Alternative: prepare your own bleach solution by mixing equal parts bleach and water. You can mix this solution in a large squeeze bottle for easy application, or mix it in a large plastic bucket or tub. Then, prepare your neutralizing solution by mixing 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 10 parts water in a plastic tub, bowl, or directly in your sink. Since bleach works so fast, it’s helpful to have a neutralizing solution to stop the bleaching process once the desired lightness is achieved. Be sure to prepare enough neutralizing solution to fully saturate your garments. Step 3: Apply bleach Apply bleach: For this project, you’ll want to use a dark 100% cotton t-shirt for best results. Cotton blends will work too, but may need additional processing time. Prewash (and dry, optionally) your garment and fold it into your desired tie-dye pattern, securing with rubber bands. For this tutorial, we are using the bullseye tie-dye pattern. Simply pinch your fabric into a tube, then add rubber bands to create as many sections as you’d like. Place shirt onto a wire rack if using, then apply your bleach solution, rotating the fabric as needed. Use your gloved hands to help work the bleach solution into the fabric. If you’re using the bucket method, just submerge your folded garment into the bleach solution. You’ll begin to see your bleach tie-dye results almost immediately! Keep an eye on your shirt to monitor the amount of color removal. This can take anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes, depending on how dense the fabric is. Be careful not to leave the bleach solution on for too long, as it may damage the fabric. Keep in mind that your shirt will be lighter once it has been washed and dried! Step 4: Wash Take off the rubber bands and wash: When you are satisfied with the amount of color that has been removed, take off the rubber bands and rinse your shirt with water. Then, place your shirt into the neutralizing solution for at least 15 minutes to stop the bleaching process. Rinse it once more after soaking, then add it to the washing machine. Set the load to large and use cold water with a small amount of detergent. Dry normally. Step 5: Reveal Design Reveal: Once your bleach tie-dye shirt has been washed and dried, it’s ready to wear! Those designs will be just as bold as you are. Step 6 : Add Color Add Color: Take your creation one step further with your favorite Tulip One-Step Tie Dye! Mix the tie-dye solution and apply colors to the bleached parts of your shirt. Once you’ve added your dyes, carefully gather your shirt and place it into a sealable plastic bag or wrap in plastic wrap to keep it damp while the dye completely processes. This will take 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want to give it some extra time. After the dye processes, rinse and launder according to package instructions. Now you have an awesome colorful reverse-dye tee! Ta-da! It’s really THAT easy to create a stunning bleach tie-dye shirt. If you’re still unsure about using household bleach for your tie-dye projects, try one of our Reverse Tie-Dye Kits for bleach tie dye made simple! You can test the waters with the original Reverse Tie-Dye Kit, draw custom designs with the Reverse Dye Pen, or go all out with the Reverse 4-Color Tie-Dye Kit. Bleach Tie dye FAQs What items can you bleach tie-dye? This technique can be done on a variety of surfaces like hats, shirts, sweats, and more—but for best results, try to stick to 100% cotton or cotton blend fabrics. How long do you let bleach tie-dye sit? Always keep an eye on your garments when using the bleach tie-dye technique to monitor the amount of color removal. You can let bleach tie-dye sit for anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes, depending on how dense the fabric is. Be careful not to leave the bleach solution on for too long, as it may damage the fabric. Keep in mind that your garments will be lighter once they have been washed and dried! Is it better to bleach tie-dye wet or dry? Just like with regular tie dye, bleach tie-dye can be done on wet or dry fabrics. For heavy items such as sweatshirts, sweatpants, and jeans, we recommend dampening your fabric first so that the bleach can easily penetrate the fabric. For lightweight items such as cotton t-shirts, we recommend leaving them dry so that your tie-dye patterns come out sharp. Will you be trying the bleach tie-dye technique? Diamond Tie-Dye Technique
This one’s a real gem! See how easy it is to create 3 different diamond patterns that’ll have you feeling fancy every time you wear tie dye. Steps Step 1 Your Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit always comes with the tie-dye essentials you’ll need to tie dye your project. Each kit includes disposable plastic gloves, rubber bands, instructions, and bottles of dye powder. Depending on the tie-dye technique you choose, you might need a few extra supplies. We always recommend having a wire rack (like a baking rack) if you have one handy when you tie dye your project. This helps keep it above the pooled dye underneath as you add dye, so you don’t accidentally get different dye colors in sections where you don’t want them on your project. You might also need a washable marker if you’re creating a shape like a diamond or heart. Of course you’ll also need something to tie dye, like a T-shirt (or whatever fabric item you wish to tie dye); just make sure your fabric is made of a 100% natural fiber fabric like cotton, rayon or silk for best and brightest results. Step 2 To mix your dyes, remove the nozzle and add water straight from the faucet up to the fill line on each bottle. Replace the nozzles with the caps still on, and shake each bottle thoroughly until all dye powder dissolves. Wait to mix your dyes until you are ready to apply them. Mixed dyes left sitting for more than 24 hours might lose their concentration and therefore may end up appearing less vibrant when you use them. There’s no need to presoak your fabric in soda ash before tie dyeing; Tulip dyes come with soda ash in the formula! (Although you can totally soak your fabric in soda ash if you want to. It won’t negatively affect the process when you start tie dyeing.) We do recommend that you prewash your fabric before you tie dye it (without fabric softener – this can block the dyes from properly absorbing into the fabric), especially if your fabric is brand new. Step 3 To create a full diamond tie-dye pattern, first lay your damp T-shirt out flat on your work surface and fold in half vertically. Then fold in half again horizontally. With the bottom fold closest to you, use a washable marker to draw a line from the center of the left side fold down to the center of the bottom fold. Pleat the fabric along the marker line, keeping it so that the line appears straight along the tops of the pleats. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the fabric at this line, then continue wrapping rubber bands evenly spaced apart around the rest of the shirt or fabric. Step 4 If you have a wire rack, place your damp, bound T-shirt onto a wire rack before tie dyeing. Apply your dye colors in between the rubber banded sections. You can use as many colors as you like, or just one color. Get creative and have fun! Make sure to rotate your project as you apply your dyes to match colors on the other side. Step 5 Once you’ve finished adding your dyes to your project, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want, to allow the dye to completely set. Step 6 After the dye colors have completely set, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions. Step 7 To create a double diamond tie-dye pattern, first lay your damp T-shirt on your work surface and fold in half vertically. Then accordion fold it in thirds, starting from the base and accordion folding towards the top. Your T-shirt hem should end up just under the collar. With the side fold on your left-hand side, draw a line from the top left corner of the hem down to the center of the bottom fold. Pleat the fabric along the marker line, keeping it so that the line appears straight along the tops of the pleats. Wrap a rubber band tightly around the fabric at this line, then continue wrapping rubber bands evenly spaced apart around the rest of the shirt or fabric. Step 8 Place your damp, bound T-shirt onto a wire rack (if using) before tie dyeing. Apply your dye colors in between the rubber banded sections. We used three dye colors for this one, alternating colors between the rubber bands to really help those double diamond tie-dye patterns pop! But you can use as many colors as you like, or just one color. Get creative and have fun! If you decide to use one color, make sure to leave a little bit of extra white space on each side of the rubber bands so the patterns stand out. And don’t forget to rotate your project as you apply your dyes to match colors on the other side! Step 9 Once you’ve finished adding your dyes to your project, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want, to allow the dye to completely set. Step 10 After the dye colors have completely set, remove the rubber bands by carefully cutting away from your project. Rinse, wash and dry separately according to your kit instructions. Step 11 To create a diamond shibori tie-dye pattern, first lay your damp T-shirt out flat on your work surface. Starting from the bottom of the shirt, accordion fold it in even sections all the way to the top. Then starting on one side of the folded shirt, accordion fold it again towards the other end, this time folding the fabric in triangle shapes. Accordion fold it in triangles all the way to the other end and secure with several rubber bands. Step 12 Place your bound T-shirt onto a wire rack (if using) and apply one color of tie dye over the entire shirt, rotating the shirt as you add dye so you make sure to cover all sides with dye. If you want to add more than one tie-dye color, you can! Add your colors randomly around the shirt and see what happens! Step 13 Once you’ve finished adding your dyes to your project, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want, to allow the dye to completely set. Step 14 Once you’ve finished adding your dyes to your project, place your tie-dye project into a sealable bag, or wrap it in plastic wrap. This will help keep the project damp while the dye fully processes. Leave the project sealed for 6 to 8 hours or overnight if you want, to allow the dye to completely set.
Freestyle Tie-Dye Technique
Free your mind and your tie-dye design with the easy freestyle technique! There's no folding and binding... you just go straight to the fun part of adding the dye! Freestyle tie-dye refers to a more improvisational and spontaneous approach to tie-dyeing fabric. Freestyle Tie-Dye Technique The freestyle tie-dye technique allows you to create unique abstract designs on fabric using your favorite Tulip One-Step Tie Dye colors. Unlike traditional tie-dye techniques that involve specific folding and binding, freestyle tie dye gives you the freedom to create vibrant designs right from the bottle. Steps Step 1 Gather Supplies Gather your supplies. Step 2: Prepare project Before you get started on your project, prewash the substrate that you’ll be dyeing. Leave your fabric damp for the freestyle tie-dye technique so that colors can flow and blend. Lay the fabric flat on a protected work surface. Step 3: Add first color Prepare your tie-dye solutions by adding water to the dye bottles, filling to the neck. Replace the cap tightly and shake well until dye powder is fully dissolved. Start your freestyle tie-dye project by applying one color of dye directly to the fabric. We’re using pastel dyes for this project— colors appear darker during application but wash to a soft pastel palette when finished! Step 4: Add second color Freestyle tie-dye doesn’t follow a specific pattern, so you can apply the dyes to the fabric however you’d like! Keep the color wheel in mind when applying adjacent dyes so that your freestyle tie-dye colors don’t muddy. Step 5: Slowly add more dye We’re creating a matching set for this freestyle tie-dye project! When applying dyes to fabric with the freestyle tie-dye technique, keep the tip of the bottle close to the fabric and squeeze slowly. This will give you more control and ensures the fabric is properly saturated with dye. Step 6: Wrap & let set Once you’ve finished applying dyes to your freestyle tie-dye project, cover with plastic wrap or place your project into a sealable plastic bag. Allow the dyes to set for 6-8 hours or overnight for more vibrant results. Step 7: Wash & reveal! After the dye processes, rinse and launder according to package instructions.
