Advanced Tie-Dye Technique: Sunburst Ice Dye

Advanced Tie-Dye Technique: Sunburst Ice Dye

One of the best things about tie dye is that it’s fun for all ages and experience levels! If you’re interested in a more advanced tie-dye technique, we’ve got you covered! Check out this advanced tie-dye tutorial from The Pretty Life Girls and learn how to tie dye using the sunburst ice dye technique. Tulip’s Ultimate Summer Bundle Tie-Dye Kit is perfect for this project— it’s got tons of vibrant colors so that you can tie dye like a pro! What you need: Tulip Ultimate Summer Bundle Tie-Dye Kit 100% cotton T-shirt Wire rack + tray Rubber bands or twine Ice Scissors Sealable plastic bag (optional) Scrap fabric (optional) Clothespins (optional) Step 1 Prewash tee, pinch and pull fabric to create sunburst Before you get started on this advanced tie-dye technique, cover your work area with the included protective surface cover and prewash your shirt to remove sizing. Lay your damp shirt flat, then pinch fabric and pull upward few inches to create a sunburst. Step 2 Bind to create multiple sunbursts Tightly wrap a rubber band or twine 1 to 2 inches below tip of the fabric, then continue binding with desired amount of rubber bands. Repeat for desired number of sunbursts throughout the shirt. For this advanced tie-dye technique, Pretty Life Girls made 6 sunbursts with 3 to 4 sections each. Step 3 Place bound fabric on grate and place ice guard around fabric Once you’ve finished binding your fabric, place it on top of a wire rack over a baking tray to catch excess dye. Pretty Life Girls also created a makeshift guard out of scrap fabric and clothespins to contain the ice. Step 4 Sprinkle the fabric with dye powder This advanced tie-dye technique uses the ice dye method, so there’s no need to mix the dyes with water. Sprinkle dye powder directly from the bottles onto the fabric, making each banded section its own color. Step 5 Cover project with ice and let melt Cover your project in ice and allow the ice to melt completely. As the ice melts, the colors will transfer onto your T-shirt with beautiful watercolor effects. If you see unsaturated dye powder on your T-shirt after the ice starts melting, just add more ice and allow it to melt again. Depending on where you live and the weather temperature, it could take a while for the ice to melt or not much time at all. If the ice melts quickly, place your project into a sealable bag and allow the dye to set for 6 to 8 hours. If it takes about this long for the ice to melt, skip the bag and move on to the next tie-dye step! Step 6 Use scissors to cut rubber bands or twine Once the ice has melted, use scissors to carefully cut and remove any rubber bands or twine.

Apply dye solutions to the light-colored sections of the dress, using gloved hands to work the dye into the fabric. Cover with plastic and let set for 6-8 hours or overnight. Easy Paint Dripping Technique with Puff Paint

Easy Paint Dripping Technique with Puff Paint

How to create with the easy dripping technique with Puff Paint. What You Need Tulip Puff Paint Aleene’s Clear Casting & Coating Epoxy Resin Kit Stainless steel tumbler Red adhesive permanent vinyl Vinyl decal Glitter and Peppermint Sprinkles Electrical or resin tape Heat gun Wooden stir sticks Plastic cups Safety gear Tumbler spinner Red trim (optional) Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue (optional) Step 1 Remove the lid from the tumbler if necessary. Cut a piece of red adhesive vinyl to fit the tumbler and carefully adhere it in place. Apply the vinyl decal to the front of the tumbler. Step 2 It’s time to create paint dripping effects on your tumbler! Use the Tulip Puff Paint to create a frothy marshmallow drip around the top of the tumbler. Hold the tip of the Puff Paint to the tumbler and gently squeeze, rotating the tumbler until you’ve created dimensional paint drips all the way around. Use more paint for larger drips and less paint for smaller drips— gravity will do all the work to create dazzling dripping effects! Be careful to not get any paint inside the mug or directly on the rim; clean with soap and warm water if you do. Step 3 Add faux peppermint sprinkles and glitter to the paint drips while the Puff Paint is still wet. Let the paint dry completely before proceeding. Step 4 (optional) Cut red trim to fit along the bottom of the tumbler and secure with Tacky Glue. This step is totally optional, but provides a cleaner final look to your winter tumbler! Step 5 Cover the handle and inside of the tumbler with electrical or resin tape and place onto your tumbler spinner. Make sure you’re wearing protective safety gear before working with resin! Use disposable plastic cups and wooden stir sticks to mix the Aleene's Clear Casting & Coating Epoxy Resin according to package instructions. Step 6 Start the tumbler spinning slowly. Carefully pour the epoxy resin onto the tumbler and use a gloved finger to spread the epoxy evenly over the mug, sealing in your custom designs! Step 7 Glide the heat gun above the tumbler as it turns to eliminate bubbles. Let the tumbler spin for at least 12 hours while the epoxy resin cures. Step 8 Once the epoxy resin is cured, remove the tumbler from the spinner. Remove all the tape, wash thoroughly, and replace the lid. Your custom paint drip tumbler is now ready for winter!

Faux Embroidery with Fabric Paint

Fabric Paint Faux Embroidery Painting Tutorial

You don’t need to master the art of embroidery to make embroidery-inspired art! Put away the needle and thread and pick up a paintbrush, because in this painting tutorial, Delineate Your Dwelling will show you how to use Tulip Fabric Paints to make colorful art without so much as a stitch. What you need: - Tulip Soft Fabric Paint Pack – Wilderness or pack of choice - Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint - Embroidery hoops – desired size - Embroidery cloth - Scissors - Pencil - Paintbrushes - Paint palette - Optional embellishments: raffia, wood beads, wide popsicle sticks, hot glue This painting tutorial gives you an alternative way to create embroidery-inspired art, without the needle and thread! First decide on your color palette and the designs you’d like to paint. Use a pencil to lightly trace your embroidery hoops on the embroidery cloth so you know the amount of space you are working with for each design. Next sketch your designs within each circle. You can go with similar sun, moon and water motifs like Delineate Your Dwelling, or come up with your own creative designs! Once you’re happy with your sketched designs, it’s time for the next part of this faux embroidery painting tutorial! Paint in the designs with one or two coats of Soft Fabric Paint in your selected colors. Little dots make perfect stars if you’re creating a similar moon and stars motif as shown here! Faux embroidery painting tutorial tip: Don’t forget to create some “dashed” linework within your art to emulate embroidery stitches. Once you’ve painted all of your designs with Soft Fabric Paint, this is the part of the painting tutorial where you really get to create that embroidery look! Use your black Dimensional Fabric Paint to create dashed outlines and/or accents to represent stitches within your painted designs. Let dry completely before trimming the cloth and securing each painting in its embroidery hoop. This is an optional part of our faux embroidery painting tutorial, but it’s definitely fun if you want to keep the creativity going! Delineate Your Dwelling decided to accent her hoop frames with different natural embellishments like raffia, wood beads and popsicle sticks. For the raffia, create bundles about 8” long and secure each in the middle with a knot. Next fold each bundle in half and hot glue around the backside of the hoop. Continue around the entire frame. If you’re working with popsicle sticks to accent your hoop, cut off the ends of each stick to your desired size. As with the raffia, glue each popsicle stick end piece around the backside of the frame. You can also glue wood beads around your hoop frame to work in another natural element with interesting texture! We love how this faux embroidery art turned out, don’t you?! No sewing needed! How To Use Brush-On Fabric Paint for Paint Pouring

How To Use Brush-On Fabric Paint for Paint Pouring

Wondering how to do the paint pouring technique with Fabric Paint? Check out this easy step-by-step paint pouring tutorial using Tulip Fabric Paint! What you need: Tulip Brush-On Fabric Paints in desired colors - Canvas pouches - Painter’s tape - Cardboard - Disposable plastic cups - Plastic bag - Cardboard box or plastic bin you can rinse out - White glue - Stir stick Step 1 For this paint pouring tutorial, you’ll want to prep your pouch (or other fabric item) by first cutting a piece of cardboard to fit inside to help create a taught, stable surface. Cover the cardboard piece in plastic, smoothing it out as much as possible, then place into the pouch/fabric. Tape off any areas you don’t want covered in paint, like the zipper of the pouch. Step 2 In a disposable plastic cup, mix 1 part white glue with 1 part water. Step 3 Now we’re going to learn how to use fabric paint for paint pouring! Pour some of each fabric paint color into its own disposable plastic cup. Next add the glue/water mixture into each and stir thoroughly to mix. Your mixing ratio is 1 part glue/water mix to 4 parts fabric paint. You’ll want your mixture to be pourable but not too runny. Test and add more glue/water mix if needed. Step 4 In another plastic cup, pour one color of fabric paint mix, then pour another color mix over the top. Keep alternating colors to form a bullseye effect like shown. Step 5 Working over a cardboard box or bin you can clean out if you spill, place your stretched, taped off pouch on top of the cup of fabric paint containing all of the colors. Holding each together tightly, flip over so the cup is now on top of the pouch. Hold things this way for a few seconds to let the paint start flowing down towards the pouch. Step 6 Lift the cup up and watch all of that beautiful fabric paint flow! Step 7 Tilt and rotate the pouch, allowing the fabric paints to flow over it in order to coat the entire pouch. Tip from Handmade Charlotte: If you can’t get the mixture to cover some of the areas of the pouch, don’t stress! Simply pour any leftover paints from the original cups onto the pouch, or any paint remaining in the cup of mixed paints, onto those exposed spots. You don’t want to rotate the pouch around too much so your paints keep a nice pattern and don’t blend a ton and become muddy. Step 8 Once your pouch is covered with fabric paint, set it down to dry for at least 24 hours. Step 9 Wasn’t that an easy paint pouring tutorial? Look how bright and fun these pouches turned out! Now they’re ready to take with you on errands, school or work, trips and other adventures. Step 10 Now that you know how to use fabric paint for paint pouring, what else will you create with this technique? Tag us on social @tulipcolorcrafts and share your creations with us!

Shibori Tie-Dye Throw Pillows

Shibori Tie-Dye Techniques for Throw Pillows

Most of us have been tie dyeing everything we can find in our closets, but have you thought about tie dyeing your home décor? Cushy throw pillows add a cozy vibe to any space you like to relax … why not add some cool tie-dye patterns and colors too? Delineate Your Dwelling will show you three different shibori tie-dye techniques to create unique home décor that makes a statement. Choose your favorite Tulip® One-Step Tie-Dye Kit or colors to match your color palette, and read on to get the details! What you need: - Tulip Wilderness Tie-Dye Kit or kit of choice - 100% Cotton pillow covers in light colors - Pillow forms (1 per pillow cover) - Sealable plastic bags - PVC pipe or other pole/tube - Wax string/twine Before you begin, be sure to lay out a plastic tablecloth to cover and protect your work space. Then prewash your pillow covers (without fabric softener) and leave a bit damp for the dye process. Mix your dyes according to the instructions in your kit. Lay out your pillow cover and fold in an accordion fashion, then bind with rubber bands (provided in your kit) every couple of inches. Apply your dyes to the pillow cover. You can use as many colors as you like, alternating with each section, or keep to one color. It’s completely up to you so have fun! Rotate your fabric as you add the dye to make sure you get all sides. Once you’ve added all dye colors to your liking, place the pillow cover in a sealed plastic bag for 6 to 8 hours to let the dye fully set. This next option is a traditional shibori tie-dye technique. For this method you can use a wrapping paper tube or PVC pipe, rubber bands and some wax string or twine. Start by rolling your damp pillow cover around the tube and scrunch both ends inward towards the center to create lots of crinkles in your fabric. Bind with string and/or rubber bands to hold the fabric tightly in place. Apply your dye to the pillow cover, rotating as you go to cover all sides of the fabric. Again, you can choose any color combination you like or use all one color. Cover with plastic (if it won’t fit into a bag) to keep damp while the dye sets. The last of the shibori tie-dye techniques featured requires triangle folds to create cool diamond patterns on fabric! To do the triangle fold, accordion fold the pillow cover into four even sections. At one end, fold over the corner to form a triangle, aligning the edges. Continue folding the cover in this triangle shape until you’ve reached the other end of the fabric. Wrap a few rubber bands around the folded cover to secure, then apply dye to the folded cover. You can apply it around all edges (leaving the center without dye), or just along the bottom edge like Delineate Your Dwelling. Once you’ve added your dye, seal your project in a plastic bag to keep damp while the dye sets. Once the dye has completely set, you’re ready to rinse. Unbag each pillow cover and rinse under running water until the runoff is clear, removing the rubber bands. Wash and dry each cover separately according to instructions. After drying, your pillow covers are ready to stuff with pillow forms and cozy up your spaces with color and cool patterns! You can even add embellishments to your pillows like tassels or trim for extra personalization. Now that you’re a pro at these shibori tie-dye techniques, what else will you tie dye around your house? Make sure to tag us on social @tulipcolorcrafts and share with us!
