Everything You Wanted to Know About Slime Trends & How to Make Slime
If you are around kids at all, you're likely familiar with the slime craze. And if you live with kids who are into DIY crafts or who simply love to experiment, you're undoubtedly well acquainted with DIY slime and all of its variations. To those less familiar, and for those who think slime is the stuff of Nickelodeon game shows from the 90s or what goops the Ghostbusters when capturing ghosts, this type of slime is a relatively new phenomenon. Slime actually only requires a few ingredients and is a simple concoction of glue, borax and water that produces a putty-like substance. There are borax-free versions however, as well as variant recipes that call for shaving cream, cornstarch, contact solution, and other household items. The silliest part of slime that kids seem to be enjoying - aside from making it - is sticking a finger into it and then pulling it out to produce a funny little slurping noise, as organic and satisfying as the popping of bubble wrap. The History of the Slime Trend Long known as Gak, slime is actually not new: slime recipes have been floating around the internet for decades. But the recent trend with all of its variations owes its explosive popularity to social media. The revival of the slime trend started in 2015 with a few young people posting slime videos showing how to make slime as well as videos of people playing with slime to Instagram. Followers came soon after, and accounts featuring similar videos blossomed. Other kids discovered these videos in their own social media feeds and started Instagram and YouTube accounts to feature their own experiments and creations. Many of the how to make slime videos involved adding secret ingredients to achieve unique properties and characteristics. Can you believe that searching for "how to make slime" on YouTube now yields more than 7 million results?! Why Slime is So Popular Many young budding chemists enjoy the process of making slime, even more than playing with it. Makers post new videos of how to make slime unique on social media to share with their friends and other DIYers worldwide. New creations keep the hobby fresh. But the real source of slime's popularity may be auditory in nature. The appeal of the videos often featuring a tub of slime being poked at repeated lyis that distinctive slurping sound the slime produces when moved, stretched and interacted with. The slime obsession has created several social media celebrities. @slime_baew, a teenage Thai slimer, has nearly 300K followers; her most popular video has been viewed more than 3 million times. YouTube user's diy satisfying MOST SATISFYING SLIME VIDEO EVER!!! has nearly 12 million views. Some enterprising young people have even capitalized on the popularity of slime. Kids are selling their slime to friends at school, and some are even selling online. A 14-year-old in Florida, for instance, has her own Etsy shop for slime to cater to her 50K Instagram followers. It helps that parents are for the most part supportive of their kids' hobby, citing the creativity and hands-on nature of making slime. And while Instagramming and posting to social media are a significant part of the fun, making slime doesn't involve significant screen time. Perhaps best of all, it's an affordable hobby, as expenses are limited to a few low-cost ingredients (like common crafting supplies and household adhesives) and storage materials. It's inexpensiveness and super fun appeal has actually led to glues flying off of the shelves at stores, as budding DIYers can't wait to get their hands (literally) into the fun and silliness of slime! What is Craft Glue?
Craft glue is any water-based adhesive that can be used for crafting projects such as school art projects, simple fix-its, and hobbies including making slime. Basically any quick-drying, non-industrial glues can be considered craft glues. Often times craft glues are white glues and clean up easily with soap and water; many are nontoxic, making them great for kids' crafting projects. Craft glues can come in liquid or solid (stick) form and can be used to affix materials like paper, wood, plastic, foam, and even fabric. Metal glue can be used to create or repair jewelry; other glues for metal can affix metal to wood for repairing or decorating furniture, as well as for creating artwork. Fabric adhesives like permanent fabric glue and washable fabric glue can help revamp an entire wardrobe, enabling no-sew enthusiasts and DIY designers alike to create unique, custom fashion pieces. Tacky Glue's uses are extremely varied thanks to its nontoxic formula and clear finish when dry. It also tacks faster and dries faster than other crafting glues, is super reliable (this adhesive has been around for 50 years and counting, after all), and dries super strong and permanent. Craft glue is all the rage right now, with trends like DIY slime popping up. And Tacky Glue is a primary ingredient of slime! Find out how to make your own tacky slime in just minutes.
How to Glue Plastic with Aleene's Best Plastic Glues
Gluing plastic can be extremely tricky, and success is not always possible. Using the right adhesive for the right material is the trick to achieving a solid result! Aleene's has some of the best plastic glues for a variety of projects. In this article, we'll show you how to glue plastic using Aleene's and give you some essential tips for success. 1. What is plastic glue? Plastic glues are selected based on the types of plastics being bonded and the specific application requirements. They are commonly used for various projects, including plastic repairs, crafts, and DIY applications. Soft plastics are flexible and lightweight, able to bend and deform without breaking, making them suitable for applications like seals, gaskets, and flexible tubing. In contrast, hard plastics are rigid, retaining their shape and offering durability and strength; they are commonly used in items such as water bottles, automotive parts, and rigid containers. Be sure to choose the best plastic glue for your project based on the types of plastics being bonded. Keep in mind that some plastics will glue better than others, but success isn't always guaranteed with any glue. Best plastic glues for your project: Aleene's offers several types of adhesives suitable for gluing plastic! Each of these adhesives has unique characteristics and application methods. Before starting your project, carefully read the labels and select the best plastic glue that suits your needs. Great for both indoor and outdoor projects. Comes in a liquid formula, too! 2. Prepare your plastic surface You'll need to properly prepare the surfaces to be bonded when working with plastic! For an extra-strong bond, we recommend sanding shiny surfaces with a fine-grit sandpaper. This will create a rough surface for the adhesive to grab onto. Clean the plastic with soap or rubbing alcohol and allow to dry thoroughly. Avoid touching the plastic with bare hands to minimize oily residue. 3. Apply glue to plastic Once you've chosen the best plastic glue for your project and have prepped the project's surface, apply the glue to the surfaces to be bonded. Some of our best plastic glues have a precision tip, but you can also use a small paintbrush, wooden skewer, or other small tools for detailed glue application. Gently squeeze the glue onto one of the plastic surfaces. Avoid using too much glue, as excess adhesive may seep out when you join the pieces together. 4. Press pieces together Pressing the pieces together while the glue cures will create an ultra-strong bond. Use a clamp, tape, or elastics to hold parts firmly together while glue dries. Typically, the adhesive will set within a few minutes to an hour, but complete curing may take up to 24 hours. Avoid putting stress on the bonded area until the glue is fully cured. 5. Clean up Clean up any excess glue immediately with a damp cloth or sponge while the adhesive is still wet. Once the glue dries, removing it can be more challenging. Clean the tip before replacing the cap and store your adhesive in a cool, dry place. Extra tips for success Here are some extra tips to help you with your next plastic glue project! Test the glue on a small, inconspicuous area before starting your project to ensure compatibility with the plastic material. Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes from the adhesive. For optimal bonding, ensure that both surfaces fit together snugly without gaps. Now you're ready to create some plastic projects with Aleene's!
