Cut the dowels to the measurements you need for the size of your pet canopy. Sand all edges and corners for a smooth surface, then use Wood Glue to glue the pieces together. Measure the outside of your frame to determine the length of fabric you need for your canopy. First measure the length of one of the rooftop angled pieces, then the length of one of the vertical pieces, and multiply by 2 (for both sides of the structure). Then add an additional 10 (5 for each side) for wrapping the fabric around the base and securing. For the width of the fabric, simply measure the depth of your frame, and add a few inches for creating hems. Iron your fabric and cut it to match the total of your measurements. Next, hem the fabric using Fabric Fusion Tape. Place your fabric wrong side up, and fold over each side along the length once, then again (about an inch) for clean edges. Unfold the sides once (so you still have a clean, folded outer edge) and run a line of Fabric Tape along the length and remove the top liner. Fold the edge of the fabric back over and press in place on top of the Fabric Tape to secure. Finally, fold the hem over the top of the frame base and press in place on the Fabric Tape to secure. Do this on both sides to finish your no-sew pet canopy! 8. Cover the surface of the mirror and use masking tape along the edges to avoid overspray. In a well-ventilated area, spray the mirror's frame with several light coats of spray paint, letting dry between coats. The foam should be the exact size of your bench seat, while the fabric and batting should be at least 2 inches longer so you can wrap it underneath. Add a thin line of Aleene's DIY Craft Fabric & Vinyl Adhesive around the top edge of your wooden bench, and a few lines in the middle. Press and smooth the foam in place on top of the glue. Layer your batting, then the furry fabric on top of the foam on your bench. For an easier time securing the layers of fabric, flip your bench over and make sure it's centered on the fabric. Add glue around the perimeter of the underside of the seat and press the batting and furry fabric in place. Use a few staples on each edge to help hold the fabric taut while the glue dries. How to Glue Wood to Glass - Simple Cactus Terrariums
I'm really getting into indoor container gardening but I have a few issues that's keeping me from getting at it full force... First of all I am fairly famous for my black thumb among friends and family. Secondly, my cat Marla eats any plant that comes into this house and many can be poisonous to kitty. I was pretty excited to realize that Marla keeps succulents and cactus alone so I can have them wherever I please in the house! I've only killed a few so far and my success ratio is pretty up there! To celebrate I bought a handful of cacti and set about making them an awesome terrarium to call home! What you need: Aleene's heavy-duty adhesive Square glass vases Ruler Balsa wood Wood stain X-acto knife & cutting mat Terrarium filler (rocks, moss, dirt, etc.) Cactus or succulent plants Forget clamps, tacks, bindings and other nonsense: using glue to attach glass to wood is easier and less likely to result in frustration, mishaps and mess ups! So whether you're a weekend woodworking warrior installing transparent doors on your display case or attempting to attach wood letter cut-outs toa mirror or pane of glass, you'll be best served using Aleene's Glass and Bead Adhesive. This industrial-strength glass glue works on slick, hard-to-hold surfaces, grabs items instantly, dries clear, and is water resistant. There are just a few easy steps to follow when securing wood to glass with this industrial-strength glue. Use sandpaper to smooth any uneven or raised spots on the wood where you will be attaching glass. Clean the surfaces to be bonded together. Use a damp cloth to remove any dust from the wood pieces. Use glass cleaner and paper towels to clean the glass pieces. Make sure all pieces are dry before gluing together. Apply a small amount of glue to the surface of the glass piece and another small amount to the surface of the wood piece. Press the piece of wood to the glass and hold for a few seconds. If necessary, remove any misplaced glue on the glass surface with a damp cloth, or carefully use a razor blade if the glue has already dried. Allow the glue to cure for 24 hours. First up you'll need to find square glass vases. I got mine at the craft store and I didn't pay attention to how flat the sides were which caused me some problems later on. Find vases where the sides aren't very curved in on the thinner parts of the glass. They're out there you just might have to dig through a few vases on the shelf to find them! I made my strips of wood the same height as my ruler to keep things simple but you can work with whatever pattern/size of wood you prefer. Measure out the width of your vase on ONE side. Cut your balsa wood so that you have 4 pieces the exact same length and width. These will be the upper and lower pieces of wood on that first side and the side opposing it. You'll need to cut the vertical pieces for this side, also. Place the bottom piece up against the glass and then place the top piece along the upper edge. Hold both with one hand. Measure the distance between the two pieces and then cut a piece to fit. It may not be perfect but it will be close enough. See how you can see a slight gap on my piece? In the end when you see the full vase from a distance you can't tell and they still look fab! Continue the steps to cut out the strips for your other sides and for any other terrariums you're making at the same time. Stain your wood pieces any color you choose and allow to dry a few hours. Once your wood strips are dry grab your Aleene's heavy-duty adhesive. Run a moderate amount of glue on the backside of the wood. I went with a line around the perimeter and a squiggle in the middle. Press your piece of wood to the glass and hold for a few seconds. I gave myself a count of 20 and that was a pretty good amount of time for the wood to begin to hold on its own. Frame your first side. And then frame the opposing side. Allow the glue to set for 20-30 minutes. When the first sides don't sleep around at a light touch you can continue to frame the remaining 2 sides of your vase/terrarium. Place somewhere safe to cure for at least 24 hours before continuing. Next we're going to layer filler to make the center, open glass of the terrarium look lovely. I used green and gray decorative rocks on the bottom to provide good drainage to prevent overwatering. Next I just had to use this purple moss I've had lying around for ages. With a layer of moss on top of my rocks I'm now ready to bring in the potting soil and my cactus plants. The soil will push down your moss into your rocks but that's just the way it works. No worries! If you're working with cacti I'd strongly recommend getting leather or suede gloves to protect yourself from the spines. Sometimes they get in and you can't seem to find them (they go invisible or something!) to get them out again. Ouch! To set my potting soil so that it doesn't easily spill out when my terrariums are moved around I topped them off with aquarium gravel pushed into the top layer. It looks pretty and helps me from making a mess regularly! And there are my finished terrariums! Now remember how I was saying you need to be careful that the sides of your vases are somewhat flush? I didn't pay attention to that so I have some gaps in my wood frames that could have been prevented. But set out on my bookshelf with one of my Rob's paintings and a Himmeli style copper tubing sculpture I made, these cactus terrariums look amazing even with a few small gaps. Another option for completeing your terrariums is to finish both sides of your wood strips. You can then place your plant inside of the glass vase rather than on top. The glass of my vases was wavy and made this not the greatest option but if I find another set of vases with clearer glass I'm going to give that a go!
Tie-Dyed Wooden Bead Garland
Did you know that you can tie dye more than just fabrics? That’s right! Follow this tutorial from Oh Yay Studio to learn how to turn wooden beads into a colorful tie-dyed wooden bead garland. Then you can get creative and experiment with dyeing other unfinished wooden décor! Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Refills are perfect for this project— plus you’ll have lots of extras for even more tie-dye fun! What you need: Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Refills Pastels Unfinished wooden beads Disposable cups or other small containers Stir sticks Trays or tubs Paper towels Gloves Twine Pompoms, tassels, other embellishments (optional) Choose which colors from the Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Refills that you want to use for your wooden bead garland and begin to prepare your dyes. Lay out cups or containers onto a tray to catch any spills. Cut your packets of dye and empty them one at a time into each container, then pour about 1/2 cup or 4 oz. of hot water into each. Thoroughly mix the dye and water with a stir stick until it is fully dissolved. Sort out your beads into each color container OR just grab a handful and eyeball the number of wooden beads for each color. You’ll start to see the dye penetrating the wood right away! Be sure to stir the beads a few times over the next few hours so that they evenly absorb the dyes. The longer you leave the beads in the dye liquid, the more dye they will absorb! You can leave the wooden beads in the dye for up to 12 hours. Once you’re satisfied with the amount of color absorbed in your beads, lay out some paper towels onto another tray. Wearing gloves, carefully remove the beads from the dye solution and lay the beads onto the tray with paper towels to dry. Set aside and allow to dry completely. Once the beads have dried completely, it’s time to create your wooden bead garland! String your beads together with twine and add pom poms, tassels, and other embellishments as you’d like. Get creative and make this garland your very own! Will you be making your own tie-dyed wooden bead garland or other dyed home décor? Let spray paint cure before adding shelves and fixtures Spray several light coats of color versus one heavy coat to avoid any color drips. Once you are happy with your coverage, let dry and cure completely before securing the top of your desk or attaching any additional shelving or fixtures. COLORSHOT sawhorse desk spray painting project When your desk spray painting project is finished, it’s time to set it up in your space! You can use it for your own workspace or create an arts and crafts station, or even a desk for your kiddos when they get back to schoolwork. Make it inspiring and a place you feel happy and motivated to work in each day. For other COLORSHOT office space ideas, check out our Girl Boss Office Makeover. Now who’s ready for a lunch break?
Celebrate National Donut Day with Tulip
National Donut Day is June 5, and we couldn’t be happier about it. At Tulip we celebrate donuts regularly (really, is there anything better than a doughy, frosted, sprinkled treat?!) and National Donut Day is just one more reason to indulge. Combine donuts with our love of crafting and it’s the perfect day! To celebrate this all-important holiday, we’ve put together a roundup of some of our favorite donut-themed DIYs made with Tulip Color Products. We hope the following projects help you get inspired to work up your creative appetite! What you need: - Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paints – desired colors - Tulip Brush-On Fabric Paints – desired colors - Tulip Fabric Markers – desired color pack - Tulip Fuchsia One-Step Tie Dye Kit (or desired color) - White 100% cotton T-shirt - Clutch bag - Binder (or surface for clings) - Donut pattern - Plastic sheet cover - Bowls or large circle templates to create donut shapes These donut clings look almost good enough to eat, don’t you think?! Fun for decorating laptops, binders, windows and more, donut clings are easier to make than actual donuts using Tulip Dimensional Paints. To make your own clings, slide a donut pattern you can print from online into a plastic sheet protector, then trace over the designs with Dimensional Paint. If you mess up, you can simply wipe the paint off with a damp paper towel and start again. Once your clings are completely dry, it’s time to tack them onto your surface! The next best thing to eating a donut is wearing one! If you weren’t aware that you can tie dye a donut T-shirt, now you know. It’s super easy to do, and once you have your dyed donut shape, the only thing left to do is add sprinkles with Dimensional Paint! Get the full tutorial here on our Tie Dye Your Summer website. Just like donuts, you can never have too many handbags, and a donut clutch is the icing on top if you ask us. We love this sweet DIY from our friend Mikyla Creates, which uses Tulip Fabric Markers on simple white fabric to create such a fab little bag you can take on any adventure. Check out the tutorial here and get ready to add to your handbag collection with this treat of a project. If you don’t have any tie dye on hand for the project above, here’s a great alternative. This donut T-shirt can be made with Tulip Fabric Markers alone or using Tulip Brush-On and Dimensional Fabric Paints. You can lightly sketch on your design with a chalk pencil if you don’t feel comfortable freehanding it, then color it in with markers or paint. If you want your sprinkles to really pop, use Dimensional Paints for ultra 3D effects! Who’s ready for some treats after all of this creative brain food?!
Pastel Dimensional Paint Floral Vases
Flowers are an instant mood boost for a lot of us, so why not double the effect and create a set of vases with flowers on them too?! The perfect centerpiece for your intimate Easter dinner at home, or even a lovely accent on a side table, you can never go wrong with bouquets of flowers. Mikyla Creates will show you how to DIY your own set of floral vases for spring using pretty pastel shades of Tulip Dimensional Paint. What you need: - Tulip Dimensional Paint in desired colors - COLORSHOT Premium Spray Paint - Head in the Clouds - Glass vases or jars - Painter's tape - White acrylic paint - Paintbrush Make sure your vases are clean and free of any dust and prints. Tape them off at different levels using painter's tape. Working in a well-ventilated area, spray each vase with several light coats of white spray paint, letting dry between coats. Once you're happy with your paint coverage, remove the tape and let the vases dry completely before moving on to the next step. On a paper plate or paint palette, squeeze out some of each color of Dimensional Paint then mix in white acrylic paint to each color. Use a paintbrush to paint leaves and stems all around the white portion of each vase. Paint each vase with a different color of paint. Use the Dimensional Paint directly from the paint bottle to create dimensional flowers and dots over the leaf patterns in the corresponding color. Once you're happy with how your project turned out, let everything dry completely before using. It's time to let your creativity bloom for Easter and the rest of spring!
How To Repaint A Dresser
If you're anything like us, you find some sort of thrill in making old stuff look new again (especially with spray paint)! Why toss something out if it still has major potential? Something that looks terrible in yellow might suddenly be a head turner in silver, you know? In this post we're talking about how to repaint a dresser since we all have them and most of us don't even like our dresser because it looks BLAH. So whether you recently scored an old dresser at a yard sale or it's been in your family for years, giving it a makeover to match your current fabulous taste is easy with COLORSHOT Premium Spray Paint. First remove all of the hardware. If you don't feel like sanding down the dresser, we don't blame you. You'll just want to coat it with Primer. Spray several light coats, letting dry between coats until you have a nice basecoat. Spray several light coats of Princess Cut (or desired color) spray paint onto the dresser, letting dry between coats. COLORSHOT dries to the touch in 10 minutes but let the dresser completely dry before reattaching hardware. You can put on new hardware or spray paint the old stuff to give it a whole new look! How stunning is this metallic color on this dresser? The light silver sheen of Princess Cut really adds an elegant touch, don't you think? Now you know how to repaint a dresser in a few easy steps! We don't know about you, but this is one dressing room that inspires us to get glam on the daily.
DIY Rainbow Painted Nutcrackers
It's the most wonderful time of year (depending on when you are reading this - but obviously we mean the holiday season) ... and what makes it so wonderful, aside from you know, togetherness, quality time, etc. ... is the decor! The nutcracker is a traditional holiday favorite for decorating, but true to our own traditions here at COLORSHOT, we decided to DIY a set of RAINBOW nutcrackers because we love COLOR no matter what time of year it is! What you need: - COLORSHOT Premium Spray Paint (desired colors) - Wood nutcracker figurines (can be metal or plastic as well) - Plastic surface cover to protect work surface - Painter's tape (if needed for any masking) Make sure your nutcracker figurines are clean and free of any dust. If there are any parts of the nutcrackers you don't want painted, you can mask them off with painter's tape. If the nutcrackers you are painting are wood or metal and have a slick surface, you might want to try spraying a coat of Primer before adding color. In a well-ventilated area, spray several light coats of color onto each nutcracker, letting dry in between coats. When you are happy with the coverage, let dry completely. Once they're completely dry, set up your rainbow painted nutcrackers and make a statement with your holiday decor this season!
Spray Painted Chandelier
One easy way to fancify any space is with a chandelier. Even an outdoor space and even if you hang the chandelier from a tree. Instant fancy. If you want to be even fancier (and why wouldn't you?), you can spray paint your chandelier to match your party color scheme using COLORSHOT Premium Spray Paint. With all of the bright, on-trend colors to choose from, upping your dinner party's game with a spray painted chandelier that matches your table is easier than putting together your guest list. What you need: - COLORSHOT Premium Spray Paint (we used Farmer's Daughter) - Metal chandelier Make sure the chandelier is clean and free of any dust. Remove any bulbs, candles, etc. If your chandelier is made from a shiny metal, you'll first want to spray it with Primer and let dry. Spray several light coats of Farmer's Daughter (or desired color) over entire chandelier, including chain, letting dry between coats. Whether your chandelier is purely for decoration or functional, no one can deny how fantastic it will look newly made over with COLORSHOT. Look at that color coverage - so pretty in pink!
