How to Use Soda Ash for Tie Dye
Published Date: September 21, 2020 If you’ve heard of tie dye, you’ve probably heard of soda ash too. If not, then we’re sure you’re now thinking, what is soda ash? And what does it have to do with tie dye? Soda ash is also known as sodium carbonate, but the most important thing you need to know about it is that soda ash can help prepare the fibers of your fabric to better absorb dyes and therefore produce brighter results. It’s often used as a presoak treatment before tie dyeing, but it’s not necessary when using Tulip One-Step Dyes because they already have soda ash mixed into the dyes. However, you can absolutely still use it! In this tutorial, Mikyla Creates shows you how to use soda ash for tie dye. Supplies needed - Tulip Soda Ash - Tulip One-Step Tie-Dye Kit of choice - White 100% cotton hoodie or item to tie dye - Bowl - Measuring cups - Stir spoon - Disposable plastic surface cover - Sealable plastic bag Instructions Add warm water to mixing bowl Prepare 8 cups of warm water and add to a mixing bowl. Make sure the bowl is large enough to fit the item you are going to tie dye. Add soda ash and stir Add half of a 2-lb. bag of soda ash to the warm water and stir until thoroughly mixed. Submerge fabric in soda ash Completely submerge your hoodie (or item you are tie dyeing) in the soda ash solution and allow it to soak for 30 minutes to an hour. Fold and bind fabric After your fabric is done soaking, remove it from the solution and wring it out, but do not rinse it. Place it on your covered work surface and fold and bind it using whatever tie-dye technique you like! Apply dyes and let set Mix your One-Step Dyes according to instructions, then apply to your soda ash pretreated fabric as normal. Once you have applied your dyes, cover your project with plastic or seal in a sealable plastic bag and let set for 6 to 8 hours or longer. Then rinse and launder according to instructions. Soda ash tie-dye hoodie And that’s how to use soda ash for tie dye! Wasn’t that easy? Didn’t Mikyla’s hoodie turn out so bright and fun?! DIY Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial
Published Date: April 13, 2020 Right now we all have health and safety on our minds - our own and that of everyone around us. Face masks have always been a great tool for helping to protect from and prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses, and right now they're in short supply. Many of us are getting creative and making our own, and while they aren't the same as medical-grade masks, they still add a level of protection we don't normally have ... and they also help to keep us from touching our faces! Tie dye is a fun way to add personality to your mask (Tulip One-Step Tie Dye is nontoxic!), and the best part is, you can grab an old tie-dye T-shirt out of your closet and DIY a mask without having to leave home. Check out this tutorial and get inspired to upcycle a tie-dye T-shirt into your own colorful face mask. Supplies needed - Tie-dye T-shirt (shop One-Step Tie-Dye Kits here) - Scissors - Mask pattern (find your preferred style online and download) - Elastic - Sewing pins - Sewing machine (or needle and thread) - Iron Instructions Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial If you're like us and you already have some bright tie-dye shirts lying around, grab one of those to get started on your face mask! But you can also make your mask out of a plain white 100% cotton T-shirt or fabric first, then tie dye afterward. Tulip One-Step Tie Dye is nontoxic, so you don't have to stress about wearing the dyed fabric against your face. Find a pattern online that you like best and print out. Make sure it's large enough to cover your face, and that you have a pattern that includes a liner and an outer layer. Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - use pattern to cut fabric Lay your tie-dye T-shirt out flat and pin the patterns through both layers to hold in place while you cut out. The great thing about using a T-shirt is you automatically have two layers (you'll need two pieces for each pattern)! If you're using a swatch of fabric instead, make sure to fold in half and cut through both layers. Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - use pattern to cut fabric You should have two pieces for the inner layer and two for the outer layer. Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - stitch along curved edge Place right sides together for both the inner and outer layers and use sewing pins to hold in place. Stitch along the curved edge, leaving at least a 3/8-inch seam. Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - clip seam and do a top stitch Use your scissors to make cuts along the seam of the section you just sewed, then iron to one side (to help hold in place) and do a top stitch along this clipped section. Make sure to do this for both the inner and outer layers of your mask. Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - progress shot Your mask should look like this so far (right side facing outward). Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - fold and stitch sides For your inner layer, fold side edges over and over again, then iron to hold in place. Stitch along each edge to secure. Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - stitch layers and clip Place your inner and outer layers right sides together, aligning the center seams. Stitch along the curved top edges and the bottom edges, leaving another 3/8-inch seam allowance on each side. Use your scissors to make cuts along these seams as done before. Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - fold and stitch edges Turn your mask right side out and fold over each raw side edge once, then once more. Stitch in place to form the ear loop holders. Tulip Tie-Dye Face Mask Tutorial - fold and stitch edges String a section of elastic (about 8 inches long - but measure your ear for a more accurate length needed) through each ear loop holder you just created. Tip: It helps to fasten a safety pin to one end of the elastic and pull it through the ear loop holder. Overlap each end of the elastic strand about an inch to create a continuous loop, then stitch in place. Now you have bright, washable tie-dye face mask you can use whenever you need to head out and about!

How To Wear Tie-Dye
Published Date: June 11, 2019 You might be shocked to find out that some of us on the Tulip team do not wear tie-dye T-shirts. Before you gasp in horror and exit this post, WAIT! We're not saying we don't LIKE wearing tie dye, we're just saying that some of us prefer wearing our tie dye in other ways than a T-shirt. "Well, how else can you wear tie dye besides on a T-shirt?!" you might be wondering. We are so glad you asked, because that is EXACTLY the purpose of this post! Read on to see how to wear tie dye other than on a T-shirt ... these projects are perfect for adding a pop of color to your style whether you too are not into wearing tie-dye T-shirts, or you're just looking for a way to mix up your tie-dye fashion style. Supplies needed - Tulip Tie-Dye Kit - Scarf (100% cotton, rayon or silk) - White canvas sneakers - White denim jeans - White cotton jean jacket - Canvas tote bag - White cotton bodysuit and/or T-shirt dress - Denim shorts with lace accents - White cotton bandana Instructions Ombre Dyed Scarf The ombre tie-dye technique is one of our favorites because no matter what color palette you choose, it always looks so pretty! An ombre dyed scarf is a great way to add color to your look whether you're at the office or getting ready to stuff your face at a BBQ - it's all in how you style it! For a bright spring/summer scarf, choose a tie-dye kit like the Luau 5-Color Tie-Dye Kit. Tie-Dye Shoes In a world with mass retail and so many of the same thing everywhere you turn, at least you can take comfort in knowing you can customize your shoes to be one of a kind! We tie dyed this set of Chucks with the ombre tie-dye technique and a paintbrush, but you can literally add dye straight from the bottles in a similar pattern, or a splatter pattern or however you feel like. There's no wrong way to tie dye! Just make sure your shoes are made from canvas, and for bright rainbow effects, try using the Rainbow 5-Color Tie-Dye Kit. Tie-Dye Denim Vest A denim vest is a wardobe staple, as far as we're concerned. Like its counterpart, the denim jacket, you can pretty much wear it all year long with most outfits to add a casual cool vibe to your look. Try tie dyeing a white denim vest using the crumple tie-dye technique and one color like black for a fashion statement that's so fab. Tie-Dye Lace Accent Jean Shorts Another wardrobe staple? Jean shorts! Perfect for lounging at home, summer outings or pretty much doing whatever in, jean shorts aren't falling off anyone's radar any time soon. Customize a cutoff pair of denim shorts with lace fabric along the bottom edge (just glue on with a permanent fabric glue like Aleene's® Fabric Fusion) dip dyed in a bright dye color like red. Don't have a container for dip dyeing? Don't even trip ... you can squeeze the dye directly from the bottle onto the bottom section of your shorts for the same effect. Tie-Dye Bodysuit and Tie-Dye Dresses What exactly are you supposed to wear on a summer road trip? Why sacrifice cuteness for comfort when you can have it all??? Boyfriend jeans, bodysuits and T-shirt dresses are at the top of our list for road tripping this summer; make yours stand out no matter what town you end up in with earthy shades of tie dye. Pick up the Kaleidoscope 12-Color Kit and have a tie-dye party with your besties before you hit the road. Looking for tie-dye techniques to try? Get creative with the string bullseye tie-dye technique or the striped tie-dye technique. How To Wear Tie-Dye Jeans Another article of clothing you can tie dye outside of the T-shirt realm is a pair of jeans (as long as they are made from 100% cotton). Whether you prefer muted tones like shown here or you want a pair that's super bright and colorful, turn heads in a pair of DIY tie-dye jeans that you know no one else will be wearing. We used the string tie-dye technique for this pair but feel free to get creative with tie-dye techniques like the crumple technique or the ice dye technique for a fun way to stay cool this summer! Tie-Dye Bandana Keep your hair out of your face and look cool doing it with a tie-dye bandana! Great for camping or everyday wear, a tie-dye bandana is a fun way to add some color to your look without going over the top. We used red and blue dyes from the Psychedelic 3-Color Tie-Dye Kit in a random pattern on a white bandana, but get creative with your tie-dye patterns and colors - it's totally up to you and your style! Tie-Dye Tote Bag Are you now convinced that you can rock a tie-dye look aside from a T-shirt?! Your options on how to wear tie-dye are endless as long as you're working with dyeable fabrics. (Think natural fibers like cotton, rayon and silk.) You can even give your grocery tote (or your everyday handbag) some tie-dye love with a variety of colors in one of the Tulip Tie-Dye Party Kits. Published Date: March 28, 2019 It's probably pretty obvious that we're big fans of all things tie dye, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that we think our furry friends should be able to enjoy it too! We decided to try our hand at tie dyeing a dog bed (because how cute will a cushy, colorful tie-dye bed look in any room in the house?!), but you can also tie dye pet shirts, scarves and other accessories as long as they're cotton. Think it's hard to tie dye a pet bed? Spoiler alert: it's actually super easy with our One-Step Tie Dye! Skip the buckets and the stress and create a colorful tie-dye pet bed in no time. We'll show you how! Supplies needed - Tulip One-Step Tie Dye - desired kit - 100% cotton white pet bed with removable cover - Zip ties (or you can use the rubber bands from your tie-dye kit) - Plastic surface cover - Paper towels Instructions Step 1: First you'll need to select your color palette. We chose to use one color, but you can definitely have fun with it and use multiple tie dye colors. Just make sure they coordinate so that if the dyes blend on the fabric, they turn a nice shade instead of muddy brown (think in terms of red + blue = purple, etc.). You can go with your favorite tie-dye kit or choose several 1-color options. Remove the bed cover and wash it (without fabric softener). You can take it straight from the washing machine to prep for dyeing. If you won't be dyeing it right away, just make sure to dampen it before you bind for tie dyeing. (You don't have to soak it, you just need to make sure it's damp.) Step 3: We chose to do the bullseye tie-dye technique for our dog bed, but you can choose just about any tie-dye technique you'd like! The beauty of tie dye is that there really is no wrong way to do it. Just make sure you follow the instructions that come in your Tulip Tie-Dye Kit for dyeing and laundering. P.S. If you're new to tie dye, here are some helpful basics on how to tie dye that you might find super helpful. Seriously, how cute is Rosco on his new tie-dye dog bed?! Jenz and Otto are living the tie-dye dream too! This makes us want our own tie-dye bedding now!
